D. Discussing new concepts and Practising New

Skills #1

When we deal any text, we can always notice

that the writer has something to convey, either
explicitly or implicitly.
In critical reading, you need to distinguish the
implicit and explicit information.
- What is the difference between explicit and
implicit information?

This will help you infer or guest what you read.

When you know implicit and explicit
information this will help you also to evaluate a
claim made by an author and it will help you to
see writer’s arguments and evidences so you
can begin judging the writer’s work.

What is a claim? Class read.

1. Claim of Fact – refer to contain has

existed (past) Exists (present) or will
exist (future)

A claim is an arguable statement. It is an Guide Questions:

opinion that a writer asks an audience to accept. -Did it happen? -Does it exist?
-Is it true? - Is it a fact?
As a reader or a writer, it is a must that we -How can its truthfulness be verified?
know the different types of claims in order for
us to formulate one.

Okay we have 3 types of Claims can you read Student: Death penalty is unjust.
the first one?

Example: Global warming is a human caused

phenomenon.

Can you give me another example of claim of

fact?  There is one God.
Given the picture formulate a claim of fact.
Student: I can prove the truthfulness of my
claim by citing evidences and facts related to
it.

Claims of Value – are value judgement made

based on morals, standards, and norms

Question to answer to check if a claim is a

Claim of Value.
Now, what should you do to prove the  Is it good or bad?
truthfulness of your claim?  Is it Valuable or not valuable

That’s right.

Now, class read the second type of claim.

Example: Abortion is immoral.

Given the picture, formulate a claim of value. Student: Dogs make the best pets

(Student answers may vary.)

Claims of Policy - statements that argue

that something needs to be done. Maybe it be
making a law or calling for action.
- A claim of policy usually has the
modals should, must and ought to.

Okay, very good. What do you think are the

good qualities of dogs that make it best pets?

And the last type of claim is Claim of Policy.

Everybody read.
People who refuse to recycle should be
forced to do alternative community service.

Example: A dress code should be introduced for

all students.

Given the picture, formulate a claim of policy.
