The first skill I plan to use in my teaching is having the students learn how to
“read” visual literacy. The way the world is set up now with visual images being thrown
at us thousands of times a day shows how important this skill is. I think this is something
that we can get better at the more we practice it. I also think starting from a young age
is beneficial so they can start to understand if images are fake or not. I think teaching
this skill can build relationships and trust because of the connections we can make from
evaluating the images. This will help me be a better teacher because the children will
trust me and thus learn better. Another skill is the creative process. I really like the idea
of starting the students with imagining and generating ideas, then moving on to planning
and exploring. I think students advance their skills the most when they are
experimenting. I think this skill can make me a better teacher by learning how each
student thinks about things. It could show me what they are comfortable with and how to
challenge them. This would help me differentiate instruction for them by knowing the
types of questions to ask to further their thinking and get them on the right track. The
last skill I want to use is SIOP language analysis. I think this is important because
everything we do with these four domains has to do with our communication.
Developing this skill is important for being successful in the real world. Acquiring the
knowledge at a young age will help students build this throughout their school career
and be ready when using it for an important task, like getting a job. I think this will help
me be a better teacher by modeling the domains and showing the importance of them. I
can use these skills to pair up students that can help each other grow. I will be able to
differentiate instruction by having the students practice the skills they are lacking.
I found learning about TAB was the most useful thing for my future teaching
career. I think this because I found benefit in it when I completed it. It is something that
you could use for multiple lessons. It is research based and the results were
phenomenal. When it states that there was increased engagement and decreased
behavior issues, this alone shows why most students get bored and act out in school. I
believe when we focus in on what students actually want to learn, their level of growth
will exceed anything we would assign them. When we build on student’s interests, we
are helping them gain confidence and creativity that could make a difference in the
world. I know this will help me be a better teacher because I will be equally focused on
how I can incorporate this into lessons that I have to teach but make them desirable to
all students for the best chance at success for each student.
Learning about the physical environment your classroom has really sparked my
interest. I was surprised to learn that the colors that you use in your classroom could
help or hurt students. This is something I want to look further into because I don’t want
to do something that could cause frustration for some students, even when they are
unaware of it. Learning that color coordinating things could help my classroom run more
smoothly is important for my students and for me. I know being organized can benefit
me by using my time wisely and having things filed for easy reference if I need them. I
want to have an aesthetically pleasing classroom but I did not know that even small
details would help take it to the next level. I also want to investigate the support stations
that I could have in my classroom to help support students. I want to look into more
articles and ask experienced teachers what are common needs and what works best for
students to help them throughout their school day.
