Ashley’s Philosophy of Teaching

How do I believe learning occurs:

“Our job is not to prepare students for something. Our job is to help students prepare
themselves for anything”- A.J. Juliani. I believe that when teaching students about any subject,
you must relate it to real-life situations in order to ensure that they learn and not just memorize
information. Students now learn differently from how we learned at one point in time, they
require a lot more involvement in their learning than we probably did back then. Technology is
fast evolving and we as teachers must learn to use this to our advantage and encourage students
to use what they already have at home. Help them understand that they can use it for different
purposes and not only for enjoyment but learning as well.
What is my definition of teaching?:
My reason for becoming a teacher is because I’ve witnessed the student’s excitement for
learning and that once they have the proper motivation and role models, they can accomplish
anything that they put their minds to. I believe that without teachers, there would be no other
careers, teachers shape and encourage their students to fulfill their aspirations. We guide our
students on the right paths and once done right, we touch hearts and evolve minds. What I value
the most about teaching, is that students look up to you and they trust you, to them you are a
superhero. We change lives and I admire that we hold such power, we can literally change the
world for the better! The Dalai Lama said, “If you think that you are too small to make a
difference, try sleeping with a mosquito in the room”. At times you may feel like you are not
making a difference or a change but once you are putting the effort in, you will touch lives.
How do I prepare students to use the knowledge learned in class to solve real-world
problems?:
I know that I can help my students understand the world around them. By simply taking
the time to understand and learn how to teach them any subject, Social Studies for a start, helps
you to understand everything you need to know about how the past has helped and how you can
change things for the better. I can help students understand why it is important to reduce waste in
the world, or why history has such an impact on life today. I can help students understand why
these subjects are important, to help them make better and informed decisions, for example when
voting. They will understand what the country needs and who qualifies to help the country for
the better. Social Studies allows students to understand why managing resources is key, or how
different factors affect the climate and weather, they learn about so many things, which in turn
allows them to help change their minds on how they would even do daily tasks. By properly
guiding them and showing them why they need to learn these things, I can help them to change
the way they view the world.
How do I want to make a difference in the lives of my students?
I strive to have a great but professional relationship with my students. I want for them to
not be afraid to ask me questions, for them to feel comfortable with coming to me about anything
that may puzzle them. I hope to make a positive impact on their lives, for them to remember that
I encouraged them to work hard and achieve their goals and that I believe in them. I strive to be
the hand that guides and builds them up, for them to believe in themselves. The values that I
want my students to learn are that they are important and that they deserve to be here, and they
are worth taking a chance on, no matter what others have to say, as long as they believe that they
can accomplish something, they have the power to do so. I hope that all these things would help
me to make a positive difference in their lives. I strive to be the change that some of my students
may need and to be their safe place if need be.
What excites me about my discipline?
Having not yet taught in a classroom places me at a disadvantage, but it also allows me to
study and understand more of what works with students in this day in age. I have the advantage
of researching more and better understand what other teachers are doing and what works for
them and what doesn’t. I get to understand more of what to do in order to ensure that all students
are learning and grasping the information. Things that really excite me about my discipline are
that I get to be as creative as I can be with my teaching, and with everything that I do for my
students, from creating posters to creating memorable teaching moments. It is very important for
me to keep up with all the changes because I don’t want to be using old methods that are no
longer working. I want to be able to know how to use the resources properly that we have
available, such as technology. A major factor that keeps on evolving.
How do I create a safe and supportive learning environment for students?
In order to create an environment that is safe and allows for maximum learning to occur,
I strive to teach my students why it is key to help uplift each other rather than bringing down
each other. I want them to learn that it is important to accept each other for their differences and
learn from each other because that is how the world can change for the better. I strive for them to
understand the importance of individuality and that you should not change just because others
want you to change. I want my students to be able to support themselves and each other, in this
journey, so that they can create good learning memories and a wonderful environment for not
only themselves but for others. I strive for my students to view education as a wonderful
experience and not match school with a bad experience or “I go just because I am forced to
attend”, but that they look forward to learning.
What goals have I set for myself as a teacher? How will I achieve these goals?
I have set many goals as a teacher, to touch lives, to build up students, to change the way
people are thinking. I want to grow and learn as I go along in my teaching career, I want to create
memorable experiences for my students but also for myself. I want my students to remember me
as someone who has helped them for the better. I hoped to achieve such goals by working hard
and putting in the time and effort needed to achieve these goals. “I wasn’t born to “Just Teach” I
was born to inspire others, to change people, and to never give up; even when faced with
challenges that seem impossible”- We are teachers.
