CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Travel and tourism are among the extremely growing industry in our time having

the maximum share in economic development. The travel industry is crucial for the

accomplishment of numerous economies around the globe. It helps to raise the income of

the economy, makes a huge number of occupations, builds up the frameworks of a nation,

and plants a feeling of social trade among tourists and residents.

Tourism industry is one of the largest contributors of economic development in

any country. It had encouraged places and countries to pursue this highly dynamic sector.

Its growth has been fueled by several factors such as development in transportation,

socialization, and communication that helps opening up barriers and growing demand of

people to travel. Tourism industry is linked to the idea of people travelling to other

locations, either domestically or internationally for leisure and social business purposes.

Furthermore, tourism creates a cultural exchange between local citizens and

tourists. This will make diversity and cultural enrichment to the hosting city because of

what foreign tourists bring. For foreigners they will also benefit in their travel because

they will gain experiences and knowledge about the new culture. It will lead to many

opportunities for local residents because it opens up entrepreneurs to establish new

services and products that would benefit to them and to their tourism industry occurring

in their own city.

Tourism is the best form to boost one’s place like barangay Talao- Talao. It will

result in benefiting both Barangay and City. Establishing industry of tourism may help

the development of the barangay Talao- Talao. It will become a tourist destination if

improving the tourism is continuously. Building a tourist destination will help the

barangay to be known and also there’s a tendency that City of Lucena can be recognized

as a popular tourist destination. Creating tourism industry is the total of all businesses

that directly provide goods or services to facilitate businesses pleasure and leisure

activities away from home environment. The researchers discover that it will lead in

increasing income of the economy of Lucena City. Barangay Talao-talao is a perfect

place for a tourist destination because it is far from life of the city that have pollutions,

traffics and modern infrastructure that we see every day in normal lifestyle unlike in

Talao- talao, resorts and beaches are common in addition to that you can relax and

unwind peacefully without any disturbances. They offer nature to you and a lot of

accommodations that can cater any occasions you have. Barangay Talao-talao in Lucena

City is located in CALABARZON (Region IV-A) Philippines. Talao-talao as a

neighborhood in Lucena. It’s one of the well-known places that have beach resorts in

Lucena City.

Nowadays, people are fund of travelling in different destinations for new

experiences or to gain knowledge about the place they went. Tourism has brought up a lot

of opportunities to many places especially with the businesses. Sometimes tourism

industry is the reason why that destination is still surviving and thriving to continue also

to grow and develop in spite of hardship. If tourism industry is your business doesn’t

mean that you are already successful but there is a huge percentage of success ahead of

you. Entrepreneurs need to work as hard as they can because nature is beautiful as it is

but with hard work and continuously developing the place, excellent accommodation and

good services that may result in great success.

The researchers notice that tourism industry in Barangay Talao-talao can help the

place to develop more and be a popular tourist destination. While the development is still

continuing it can be a way of Talao-talao to be known in other cities or maybe other

countries. It also helps in increase the economy income that can support barangay Talao-

talao to still persistent in operating and growing their business. Building a tourism

industry in barangay helped them to maintain and grow their businesses and develop

infrastructures in Talao-talao beaches.

Statement of the Problem

The primary endeavor of this study is to know all the factors of tourism industry

that help to develop Barangay Talao-talao, Lucena City. This study will prove that

tourism industry can be a source of economy income or rather the national income.

To address to this aim, the following are the questions for the study,

1. What are the factors that helped to develop Barangay Talao-talao in Lucena

City in terms of:

1.1 Services

1.2 Accommodations

1.3 Products

1.4 Transportations

2. What are the benefits of Barangay Talao-talao when they continue to develop

tourism industry in their area?

3. What are the essential materials to promote tourist destination?

Theoretical Framework

The growth of the tourism industry had a significant impact on the economic

development of related industries such as accommodation, transportation, leisure,

services and hospitality. In many countries’ tourism has been turned into an important

tool for regional economic growth and development. Although in reality, the desirable

effects are not equitably distributed.

Telfer stated that many developing countries have tried to exploit the tourism

industry for economic stimulation by getting foreign investment, capital and surplus

from currency exchange.

Transportation is the most important factors that contributes to the success of the

tourism industry. According to Lamb and Davidson, transportation is crucial in the

tourism industry, as it connects supply (production) and demand (market) directly. The

role of transportation in tourism is essentially to provide accessibility. It has been widely

claimed by many scholars that without accessibility, tourism simply cannot take place

(Chew, Prideaux). Accessibility is not only defined as providing ability to tourists to

reach destinations, but also by the use of transportation services at destinations once they

arrived.

Service quality is motivated by the premise that it will increase customer

satisfaction and ultimately lead to better financial performance (Babikas et al.). The

quality of products and services has also been linked to external indicators of customer

satisfaction such as complaints, warranty, litigation and market share (Ahire & Dreyfus).

Satisfied customers often lead to loyal customers who continuously repurchase the

product or service.

Process in Promoting and developing of Barangay Talao–talao that will create

impact on their tourism industry.

Figure 1 shows the different stages (Input, Process and Output) which will lead us

to promote the resorts and businesses in barangay, talao - talao and this will create impact

on their tourism industry.

For the input it includes the Gathering of data to the study area and getting the

feedback of result in the area.

For the process it includes the Conduct survey using Descriptive Survey

Questionnaire to gather data from the respondents.

For the output, this showed the development of resorts and businesses in barangay

Talao-talao and the impact on their tourism industry.

Significance of the Study

The study on the establishment of Barangay Talao-talao resorts and businesses are

believed to be significant to the following:

To the Future Researchers, the study will help the future researchers think of a

better way in promoting beach resorts aligned with the research conducted by the

researchers.

To the Local Government of Lucena, it will help promote the beach resort in

barangay, Talao-talao and this will create impact on their tourism industry in general. The

result will also help them in thinking more ways on how to improve their services and

their facilities. This will also give them an overview of the feedback from their

customers.

Management of Talao-talao Resorts, this study has significance to the

management in order to provide of source information regarding the establishment to

promote the services rendered and to gather information about the resort and provide of

source of information.

Resorts Owner, the result will give the owner the chance to improve their service

and to create more ways on how to advertise their own resort.

Residents of Talao-talao, the results of this study will help to encourage the

residents of barangay Talao-talao to do business due to the increase or growth of tourists

that will go to Talao-talao.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The respondents of this research will be the owners of resorts and also the people

who are in the age of 21 years old and above at Brgy. Talao-talao Lucena, City.

The aim of this research is conducting the study about development of tourism

industry, benefits of Barangay when they continue to develop tourism industry and also

what are essential materials will be use to promote tourist destination in Barangay Talao-

talao Lucena, City. This research will use descriptive research design; this method will be

use to because the research wanted to determine the factors of tourism industry at Brgy.

Talao-talao Lucena, City. This research will use survey-questionnaire as their instrument.

Definition of Terms

The following defined terms are considered significant as it will serve as a tool in

implying the function and importance of the study:

Exploit commonly means to selfishly take advantage of someone in order to profit from

them or otherwise benefit oneself. 

Equitably refers to dealing fairly and equally with all concerned.

Stimulation encouragement of something to make it develop or become more active.

Premise is a statement in an argument that provides reason or support for the conclusion.
