MUTCD

• The MUTCD ( http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/ ) (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) serves as the national, state, and local standard for traffic control during all operations on public streets and highways in the United States.  These minimum standards apply to all public roads regardless of type, class, or agency having jurisdiction over them.  It's important that the driving public sees and reacts to similar traffic control devices whether there is a local or state road crew, a utility truck, a contractor's crew, or emergency vehicles, etc. working in a public way. 
• Part 6 of the MUTCD is entitled "Temporary Traffic Control." It provides the minimum standards for work zones relative to the "parts" of a work zone, pedestrian and worker safety, flagger control, traffic control devices and their applications, and traffic control plans.   • This 74 minute video produced by the ConnecticutDOT in 2010 includes 5 modules that discusses how public works personnel can work safely around emergency scenes.  Modules include intro, public works roles in disaster operations, natural and manmade disaster situations, safety hazards for public works responders, and hazard response and personal, and protective equipment

• “Online Flagger Training” This is an online flagger class through ATSSA. You can take this class whenever you want to and it consists of about 3 hours of class and 1 hour of testing. In place of a live instructor, the training relies heavily on graphics, video, and interactive content with narration. Student comprehension is evaluated during the class using interactive quizzes, with instant feedback. The MaineDOT is not endorsing this training…..simply providing the information. (Offsite)
