John Carr, 65, ignored evacuation warnings to stay behind and save his inherited house his parents built in Palisades. He leapt over fences, hurting a rib in the process, as the flames began to enter his rear garden and creep nearer to his home. Mr Carr used his garden hose to extinguish the spot fires and stayed awake 'all night and all day' to stave off the blaze. 'The house was built by my mother and father in 1960 and I lived here my whole life so there's a lot of memories here. And I think I owed it to them as well to try my best to save it,' the brave former pilot said.

On May 7, 2023, armed officers were called to Commercial Road in Poplar, east London, after receiving reports of a woman being attacked by two Cane Corso dogs. The woman, who was walking her own dog at the time, sustained an injury to her leg after she had been knocked to the ground by the large dogs whilst trying to protect herself. Her dog was bitten and suffered a cut on its nose and had chunks of fur missing.

After a week of sub-zero temperatures - including the coldest January night in 15 years - shivering Britain is finally beginning to thaw. Comparatively milder weather arrived on Sunday, to even some of the coldest areas which have been under a blanket of snow and ice. On Friday night into Saturday morning, lows of -18.9C (-2.02F) were recorded at Altnaharra, in the Scottish Highlands - the coldest night of the winter and the lowest UK temperature recorded in January since 2010 - while the mercury fell to -11.2C (11.84F) in Shap, Cumbria.

A parade of semi-naked Londoners hit the Underground on Sunday afternoon to take part in the annual No Trousers Tube Ride. Despite biting temperatures in the capital, attendees donned their tighty-whiteys, budgie smugglers and whatever else needed to protect their modesty - while showing off a lot of leg. Started in January 2002 with only seven people in New York, the craze has spread around the globe and this year's London iteration attracted hundreds of participants. Speaking to the BBC , the event's original creator Charlie Todd said: 'The whole point is just to create unexpected moments of joy, delight and confusion.' He added: 'It's meant to be a bit of harmless fun. Certainly, we are living in a climate where people like to have culture war fights and my rule in New York was always that my goal is to amuse other people, to give people a laugh.'

Firefighters were left to watch on helplessly after their engine lost control and skidded into the cold river during a bout of freezing weather. CCTV footage shows the stunning moment the vehicle makes it's way slowly down the path while the men scratch their heads wandering what to do. Both the workers in shot of the video take a fall themselves as they undertake the morning training routine before it all goes downhill and the bright red engine follows suit. The tragedy occurred on an icy Tuesday morning outside Llandaff Rowing Club in Cardiff on January 7 and required the rescue of around 10 members of the brigade. Many people who watched the video online appeared humoured by it, with one person joking: 'So that's how they fill up fire trucks with water. I was always wondering...'
