Award-winning BBC drama returning to screens after controversial axe with movie reboot as scripts 'given the green light'
An award-winning BBC drama is heading back onto screens thanks to a movie reboot, after the show broke viewers' hearts when it was controversially axed more than a year ago.
Ghosts tracked couple Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike Cooper (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) after they moved into a family house haunted by a chaotic array of supernatural beings.
The sitcom provided laughs around every corner over the course of four years and five seasons, and was written and performed by the collective Them There, the group behind Horrible Histories and Yonderland.
The hit show was controversially pulled in 2023 after the series five Christmas special A Christmas Gift, which saw Alison and Mike persuaded by the ghosts to sell their home to a hotel company to prevent them haunting their newborn daughter Mia.
A flash forward revealed to viewers that the couple returned to the converted house to stay in their 'usual suite' and reunite with their spooky friends.
After its finale, Ghosts won a Broadcasting Press Guild Awards for Best Comedy, beating Such Brave Girls, Extraordinary, Dreaming Whilst Black and Inside No.9 to the gong.

The Christmas special still proved a sad goodbye for the popular comedy, with fans bitterly disappointed that the show was being discontinued.
But there is good news at last for Ghosts enthusiasts, with the sitcom set for a return via a movie reboot after the script was 'given the green light'.
It is believed that both Charlotte and Kiell will join the comeback in a further positive development for fans.
An insider told the Daily Star newspaper's Hot TV column: 'A film has been written, and it's been given the green light.
'Everyone involved is really excited that Ghosts will be on the big screen.
'It's hoped that most of the original cast will be able to reprise their roles.
'Producers have already signed up a few of them, and they're in talks with the others. They think it'll be a dream cast.'
In moving to the big screen, Ghosts is following in the footsteps of Peaky Blinders, which is being adapted for a movie, titled The Immortal Man.

Cillian Murphy and the rest of the crew have made Manchester their home for the time being as filming continues apace in the city, despite the drama being based in Birmingham, after recently shooting in north-east Wales.
It was confirmed in June 2024 that the Peaky Blinders' original writing and directing team would be returning alongside Cillian for a Netflix film adaptation of the hit series.
The streaming service confirmed the news on X with a photograph of the script, while the Oscar-winning actor told Deadline: 'It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me…
'It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.'
Director Tom said: 'When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn't know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive.
'Peaky has always been a story about family - and so it's incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.'
