Frigid temperatures and freezing waters have Luzerne County authorities monitoring the Susquehanna River for possible ice jams this week.
County officials have been watching the river for several days and believe there is a possibility for an ice jam to form, David Elmore, deputy director of Luzerne County Department of Emergency Services, said in a situation report Tuesday.
Several areas, including near the boat launches in Plains Twp. and Nesbitt Park, have very little water flowing past, he said.
Slow moving water, combined with thick ice and shallow depths, are factors that can combine to form ice jams, which can cause flooding.
The river gauge at the Market Street Bridge has not shown a drop in water level — which could indicate a blockage upriver — and the National Weather Service in Binghamton has reported flowing water and chunks of ice moving southbound along the river, Elmore said.
The service predicts the ice will be moving freely by Sunday, but that colder temperatures next week could renew the concerns about an ice jam.
Elmore concluded his report by urging local municipalities to observe the waters in their areas and to report anything of concern.
