WILKES-BARRE — Luzerne County Coroner Jill Matthews plans to resign and return to the Luzerne County District Attorneys Office.

Matthews, a former prosecutor, recently penned a resignation letter, announcing she took a position as the chief of the vice/narcotics unit with the district attorney’s office. Her last day is Jan. 23.

“I’m honored to have served the citizens of Luzerne County as coroner and proud of the things we have accomplished as an office during this time,” Matthews said. “A great opportunity with the district attorney’s office arose and I am excited to return to that office as a prosecutor and division chief.”

Matthews was appointed coroner in October 2022.

Luzerne County will now advertise for a new coroner position, said County Manager Romidla Crocamo.

“The coroner is going to the DA’s office. She’s a lawyer. We are going to post the coroner’s position,” Crocamo said. “She was a great coroner and she was a great prosecutor. She’s a special person.”

Matthews’ resignation letter says she was privileged to work alongside “some of the most selfless and dedicated staff in Luzerne County.”

Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce said he was “thrilled” to have Matthews return to the DA’s office.

“She is very experienced prosecutor,” Sanguedolce said. “We are looking forward to having her lead our vice/narcotic division.”
