One, two, three: Gordon Ramsay, obviously. The British chef is notorious for yelling at the cooks, staff, and even (or, maybe, especially) celebrities on his many television shows. We’re not saying the name “Hell’s Kitchen” has anything to do with the person who runs it, but let’s just say Ramsay’s hilarious yet insulting one-liners are hard to forget. However, there’s no denying that the man’s a great chef—just ask his 17 Michelin stars. So, being the overly-critical chef and restauranteur that he is, we’d always assumed Ramsay would never step foot into a fast food restaurant. Some of the restaurants he visited on “Kitchen Nightmares” even seemed beneath him. But on a recent episode of Mythical Kitchen’s “Last Meals,” Ramsay surprised us when one of his final meal requests was from a fast food joint. Gordon Ramsay's Go-To Fast Food Order What order is so great that Ramsay is swinging through the drive-thru on the way to death’s doorstep? In-N-Out’s Double-Double burger, made animal-style. “These guys are incredible,” Ramsay says while unwrapping the burger. “It’s the perfect drive-thru; you don’t get any hassle. I bring the window down, I give them a little $100 bill as a big ‘thank you,’ and I pick up my Double-Double. Heaven.” In-N-Out’s Animal-Style Double-Double features two burger patties topped with two slices of American cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, pickle, and extra housemade In-N-Out spread on a toasted bun. “Oh, God. Bloody hell,” Ramsay says after he takes a bite. “It’s amazing.” It’s no secret that people, celebrities included, love In-N-Out burgers—but Ramsay loves them so much that he modeled his own burgers after them. In-N-Out burgers—or, more specifically, animal-style burgers—have a secret ingredient that makes them taste so delicious. The fast food restaurant adds yellow mustard to one side of its uncooked burger patties before they go on the grill. That way, once the mustard starts cooking, it caramelizes on the burger to add a crispy layer and a bit of extra flavor. Ramsay says he mirrored this technique with the burgers at his Las Vegas restaurant, Gordon Ramsay Burger, in the Planet Hollywood resort. “I took [In-N-Out] as an inspiration when I opened my first burger store,” Ramsay said. “Everyone said it’ll never work [so] how do we stand out from the crowd? The turning point was when I started basting these burgers in Devonshire butter.” Devonshire butter is a British butter made from the milk of Devon cows. Similar to Irish butter, it has a deeper yellow color and richer flavor than American butter. Ramsay has spoken about his technique before on “Good Morning America.” A few minutes before the burgers come off the grill, he bastes (or brushes) the burgers with a little bit of butter. “With that flame underneath, it sort of caramelizes the butter, [and] it puts this wonderful flavor on top,” Ramsay said on “GMA.” For those curious minds wondering what else Ramsay would want to eat at this final supper, alongside a Double-Double, he’d enjoy a full Engish breakfast, butter chicken, Buffalo chicken wings, beef wellington (made following his own recipe), a Monkey 47 Gin and tonic, sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream, and a deep-fried Mars bar. Yes, that does sound like a lot of food—but remember, Tom Hanks’ final meal consisted of an entire Tom Cruise bundt cake. But, hey, it’s your last chance to eat, so calories don’t count.
