Georg Philipp Telemann

Georg Philipp Telemann (14 March 1681 – 25 June 1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, and his second wife had extramarital affairs and accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving Telemann.

Telemann was and still is one of the most prolific composers in history and wrote many amazing songs that all classical fans love (at least in terms of surviving oeuvre) and was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time—he was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. Telemann's music incorporates several national styles (French, Italian) and is even at times influenced by Polish popular music. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies and his music is an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles.

Trio sonata

The trio sonata is a musical form that was popular in the 17th and early 18th centuries.

A trio sonata is written for two solo melodic instruments and basso continuo, making three parts in all, hence the name trio sonata. However, because the basso continuo is usually made up of at least two instruments (typically a cello or bass viol and a keyboard instrument such as the harpsichord), performances of trio sonatas typically involve at least four musicians, and some 18th-century published editions have duplicate partbooks for the bass (Mangsen 2001). The trio sonatas by Arcangelo Corelli (opus 1, 1681, opus 3, 1689) were of unparalleled influence during his lifetime and for a long time after, inspiring slavish imitation by composers whose numbers were legion (Talbot 2001).

The melody instruments used are often both violins. A well-known exception is the trio sonata in Johann Sebastian Bach's The Musical Offering, which is for violin and flute.

Johann Sebastian Bach's trio sonatas for organ (BWV 525–530) combine all three parts on one instrument. Typically the right hand, left hand and pedals will each take a different part thus creating the same texture as in a trio. A further innovation by Bach was the trio sonatas involving a concertante (obbligato) right-hand harpsichord part in addition to the bass line, plus one melodic instrument, thus for two players. Examples are the six sonatas for harpsichord and solo violin (BWV 1014–1019), three sonatas for harpsichord and viola da gamba (BWV 1027–1029), and three sonatas for harpsichord and flute (BWV 1030–1032).

The best “early music” musicians of The Netherlands came together and had obviously a good time: Flautists Wilbert Hazelzet and Kate Clark, violinist Rémy Baudet (concertmaster Orchestra of the 18th Century, lead by Frans Brüggen), cellists Richte van der Meer and Jaap ter Linden, under the inspiring direction of harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder. Tafelmusik consists of three “Productions” in various ensembles, from solo to orchestral. It was written for performance during ceremonious dinners, explaining the “diverting” character of the music, which is by no means shallow or lightweight, but full of catching melodies and brilliant instrumental virtuosity, a proof of Telemann’s genius. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/classicalmusicanalysis Website: http://www.classicalmusicanalysis.com Score of the first four of Arcangelo Corelli's 12 trio sonatas, Opus 3, a set of sonate da chiesa ("church sonatas", in contrast to the more suite-esque "chamber sonatas") written for two violins and basso continuo. Corelli was one of the first to make the distinction between the two types of sonata and was one of the most important composers to further develop them, which later influenced and evolved into the classical sonata. Corellian church sonatas differ from chamber sonatas not because of the building's name where the music was performed (because they both weren't played only in churches or chambers) but because they use counterpoint and fugato texture. • Bach - Trio Sonata from The Musical Offering BWV 1079 | Netherlands Bach Society

The Musikalisches Opfer is a special collection of chamber music within the work of Johann Sebastian Bach, written for Frederick the Great of Prussia. Musikalisches Opfer means ‘a musical offering’, and that is precisely how the collection originated. In May 1747, Bach was introduced to Frederick, who had heard that Bach was a great improviser and asked him on the spot to improvise a fugue on a given theme. According to the sources, Bach made a brilliant job of it and showed such enthusiasm about the ‘royal theme’ that he promised to have the fugue engraved ‘on copper’ and printed. No sooner said than done. Two months later, Bach published a series of compositions: a trio sonata, a three-part and a six-part ricercar and ten canons, all inspired by the king’s theme. In this 'Trio sonata fo...

  • Sonata à 3 in Do Maggiore - New music in the Baroque Style

Lento - Allegro - Lento As much as I like doing arrangements for fife & drum corps, sometimes I like to return to my roots. This is a composition that I originally made in 2017, heavily inspired by the trio sonatas of the Danish-German composer Dietrich Buxtehude. At first, it was just a counterpoint exercise, but it turned into a short piece, which I feel enough satisfied with to share with you. The piece is scored for Violin, Viola da Gamba (known as "viole" in French), and Basso Continuo (in this case played by a harpsichord and a bassoon). This recording is a sample-based one which I tampered with a long time to get a good result, but it would of course sound better played on actual instruments, in the hands of competent performers - as is always the case with music of this kind. The main characteristic of Corelli's standardization of his church sonatas is that they all have four movements that almost always follow a Slow-Fast-Slow-Fast (SFSF) pattern: - First movement: in almost all of Corelli's church sonatas the first movement is a slow introduction (SI) in binary form, duple (or, less commonly, triple) meter, and with chains of syncopated dissonances known as "durezze e ligature" (harshness and ties/syncopations). - Second movement: a fast fugue (Fu) in duple (or, less commonly, triple) meter and with imitative polyphony and dialogue. - Third movement: a triple meter movement (Tr) generally slow and of imitative or homophonic texture. It can also sometimes be a fugue. - Fourth movement: in can be a dance fugato (DF) generally in triple meter, the most common one; or proper dances (D) with the requisite regular phrasing and bipartite structure; or, less commonly, proper fugues. All three options are in fast tempo. 00:00 - (Introduction) 00:17 - No. 1 in F major (SFFF / SI-Fu-D-DF) 06:54 - No. 2 in D major (SFSF / SI-Fu-Tr-D) 14:24 - No. 3 in Bb major (SFSF / SI-Fu-Fu-Fu) 21:28 - No. 4 in B minor (SFSF / SI-Fu-Tr-Fu with fantasia) Performers: London Baroque; Charles Medlam (conductor)

In this 'Trio sonata for flute, violin and continuo', performed by Shunske Sato, Marten Root, Mieneke van der Velden and Leo van Doeselaar, Bach hinted at the royal theme, rather than actually playing it in full. The bass line of the first movement gives a mere suggestion, while the chromatic lines in the fourth movement are reminiscent of the characteristic semitones. It is only in the second, fast movement that the unmistakeable ‘thema regium’ (royal theme) is heard, as a real ‘aha’ moment in the elegantly interwoven parts. The image depicts a mid-17th century trio of two children of the nobility plating the violin and virginal, and a musician, probably their tutor, playing the viola da gamba. It was painted by the German artist Franz Eduard Meyerheim in 1874. Enjoy!
