Ottorino Respighi - Fontane di Roma
"Fontane di Roma" (Fountains of Rome) is a 1916 work by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, now considered part of the Roman Trilogy of symphonic poems along with Feste Romane and Pini di Roma. Each of the four sections is meant to depict one of Rome's fountains during different periods of the day and night. Arturo Toscanini originally planned to conduct the work in 1916, but the Italian composer refused to appear for the performance after a disagreement over his having included some of Wagner's music on a program played during World War I. Consequently, it did not premiere until March 11, 1917 where it appeared at the Teatro Augusteo in Rome with Antonio Guarnieri as conductor. Although the premiere was unsuccessful, Toscanini finally conducted the work in Milan in 1918 with tremendou...

Respighi: 6 Pieces for Piano (Scherbakov)
Resphigi is famed primarily as a master orchestrator, but it seems that the same vivid awareness of timbral colour which served him so well in the Roman Trilogy, Ancient Airs and Dances, and The Birds led him to write some remarkably effective piano music. The 6 pieces for piano, written relatively early in Respighi’s career, show him deftly deploying a wide range of pianistic textures to magical effect. Scherbakov delivers a wonderful performance – perfect dynamic control, crystalline melodic lines, and some very intelligent handling of multi-layered textures (notice how he slyly modifies the big rolled chords in the nocturne, for instance).
00:00 – Valse Caressante. Lilting and quintessentially salon-esque.
03:26 – Canone. A canon at the octave. Rhythmically playful, as the trailing voi...

Respighi - Botticelli Triptych (Trittico Botticelliano) | Three Botticelli pictures for orchestra
Ottorino Respighi - Trittico botticelliano (Botticelli Triptych, Three Botticelli Pictures) for orchestra, P. 151. Composed in 1927.
Parts/Movements:
1. La Primavera
2. L' Adorazione dei Magi
3. La Nascita di Venere
Although Respighi is best known for his glittering, even garish, suites of tone poems for large orchestra, many feel that some of his best work may be found in his more restrained and modestly scaled efforts. One such example is the Three Botticelli Pictures (1927) for chamber orchestra, a three-movement suite based on famous paintings by the Renaissance master Botticelli. Despite the work's economical scoring, it is fully as colorful and beguiling as the fulsome and flashy Pines of Rome (1924) or Fountains of Rome (1916).

Although the premiere was unsuccessful, Toscanini finally conducted the work in Milan in 1918 with tremendous success. The piece was first performed in the United States on February 13, 1919.
Movements:
1. "La fontana di Valle Giulia all'alba"
2. "La fontana del Tritone al mattino"
3. "La fontana di Trevi al meriggio"
4. "La fontana di Villa Medici al tramonto"
The first section, "La fontana di Valle Giulia all'Alba", shows this fountain at daybreak in a pastoral landscape, in which cattle pass during the morning.
In the second section "La fontana del Tritone al mattino", Naiads and Tritons dancing in the morning light, as figures of the Bernini fountain are seen nearby. Gods and goddesses using conch shells are portrayed by the French horn.
The third section introduces "La fontana di Trevi al meriggio" and is ushered in by a triumph giving news of a recent victory by the god Neptune.
The final section, "La fontana di Villa Medici al tramonto", portrays a much more melancholic atmosphere, as the brilliance of the sun fades.

Rhythmically playful, as the trailing voice is two beats behind the leading. Starts off rather inward and reticent, before attaining a kind of luminous trepidation when it moves into Eb min. Then a swift move into D, triumphant, before returning into G min. Interesting to note how the voices are placed – at first the leading voice is in the RH, then both voices are in the RH, then they switch places in the D section.
06:10 – Notturno. The emotional centrepiece of the set, and a minor masterpiece. A neverending melody poised above delicately shifting thirds. Impressionistic, with occasional drifts of aeolian colour.
10:14 – Minuetto. A sly minuet whose strong third-beat accents make it sound like it’s in 3/2 time. At 10:21, a passage in pleasingly archaic Renaissance-era fauxbourdon (melody harmonized with notes a 6th and 4th below), contrasting with the dorian-to-the-point-of-sounding-like-the-whole-tone-scale colour of the middle section. The chromatic LH voice in the middle section supplies an unexpected undertone of grating menace.
13:42 – Studio. Shimmering, combining distinctly Romantic harmony with impressionist figuration. Some echoes of Chopin and Lyapunov (maybe even Alkan).
15:16 – Intermezzo – Serenata. A gorgeous melody, occasionally gently nudged aside by occasional bits of filigree.

Commissioned by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation and premiered in Vienna in 1927, the Pictures demonstrate not only Respighi's ear for fresh and beautiful sonorities, but also his interest in the history of art in his native Italy. "La Primavera" (Spring) unfolds as a pastorale, with rustlings of nature, bird songs, and "antique" dance rhythms. "L'adorazione dei Magi" (Adoration of the Magi) evokes a mood of medieval devotion through its employment of old church modes and Gregorian chant-influenced melodies. The brilliant finale, "La nascita de Venere" (Birth of Venus), is an aural impression of the famous painting of the goddess borne upon a giant oyster shell. Skirling figures and bright sonorities suggest the play of waves, providing a backdrop for Venus' sensuous melody.
The two orchestral aspects of Respighi include his best-known compositions: on the one hand the epic (one might say bombastically colorful) tone poems of the “Roman Trilogy,” comprising Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome, and Roman Festivals, all for gigantic orchestra. The other side comprises his charming arrangements for smaller orchestral ensembles of melodies by composers of the 17th and early-18th centuries, the three Suites of Ancient Airs and Dances and The Birds, as well as the Botticelli Triptych of original material, except as noted below.
The Trittico is an evocation of three celebrated paintings by Sandro Botticelli (born Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi in Florence, c. 1445, died 1510) that today hang in Florence’s Uffizzi Gallery.
The first mention of the musical Trittico seems to have been in an interview with the composer’s wife, Elsa, a soprano – the composer often accompanied her at the piano in his own and other Italian composers’ music – after an American tour in 1927 sponsored by the indomitable Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, patron also of such greats as Bartók, Copland, Poulenc, Ravel, Schoenberg, and Hindemith, in the process drawing from those composers and others too numerous to mention here a substantial portion of the 20th-century chamber-music repertoire.
The tour concluded with a Respighi program in the splendid chamber musical hall – also the product of Mrs. Coolidge’s generosity – of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. On this occasion, Elsa related, Respighi promised to dedicate his next piece to Mrs. Coolidge, and it was on a visit to the Uffizi several weeks later that he found his inspiration in the three Botticelli paintings that constitute the musical Trittico: La Primavera (Spring), L’Adorazione dei Magi (The Adoration of the Magi), and La nascita di Venere (The Birth of Venus). The score was premiered at a concert in Vienna sponsored by Mrs. Coolidge at the end of the year, with the Respighis in attendance.
Sharp-eared listeners will note in the middle movement, The Adoration, variations on the medieval hymn Veni, veni Emanuel, the famous antiphon introduced here by flute and bassoon two octaves apart.
Herbert Glass, after serving on the administrative staffs of the New York Philharmonic and the San Francisco Opera, was for 25 years a columnist-critic for the Los Angeles Times. He has been English-language editor/annotator for the Salzburg Festival since 1996.

Filmed in a cryptic cavern in Appalachia, Cuckoo is a traditional folk song that Leah and Chloe learned from their mother and her band The Rosin Sisters. This full band version highlights the connection between the many styles of music (blues, west african, irish) that blended together in Appalachia while bringing it to a more modern and rhythmic arena. Capturing the magic and mischief of some of the inspirational figures in Rising Appalachia's life, Cuckoo is an old song with new resonance.
This song is dedicated to Whitlock Connah, Leah and Chloe's godfather, who was a fine harmonica player and folk sculptor as well as a deep soul man down in Georgia. He was one of the first people to encourage the sisters to sing and pursue music, and for that, they are forever inspired and uplifted by his spirit.

When I was planning my second recording trip to Scotland, I knew I had to meet some local musicians who could well represent their culture. I was following in the footsteps of greats after all, like Alan Lomax, who spent a good deal of time in the far North recording folk songs. Some of you might have seen the first video from this Scottish series, with the incredible ballad singer Iona Fyfe (https://youtu.be/z38ELXNcNiM). Another traditional musician I reached out to was Sam Shackleton, (allegedly related to the notable Artic explorer, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton) or Sorley, if you prefer the Gaelic spelling. Sam, a student of traditional music, Scottish culture, history and the Gaelic language invited us with open arms into his home in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, and showed us a night on the town i'll never forget. We drank our fair share of pints, caught some incredible sessions packed into pubs the size of American closets, and talked of Scottish independence late into the night.
Sam has been deep in traditional study at University the past couple years, and busking on the streets of Edinburgh. You can always tell a busker from a studio musician, I like to think. Buskers are louder, more emotive, a throwback to a time of traveling Bards, before amplification. You have only moments to impress a passerby for tips, and it forces you to hone your craft. Sorley lives up to his moniker, "the Bard", and puts on a show. This won't be the last time we meet, as I hope to return to Scotland for more recording, and Sam is keen to visit the Appalachian mountains hes heard so much about, where so many of his ancestors (and ours!) emigrated.
This song is a perfect example of the cross-Atlantic trade in culture, and you can learn more about it here
