Sam Shackleton, "Cuckoo Bird," // GemsOnVHS™
When I was planning my second recording trip to Scotland, I knew I had to meet some local musicians who could well represent their culture. I was following in the footsteps of greats after all, like Alan Lomax, who spent a good deal of time in the far North recording folk songs. Some of you might have seen the first video from this Scottish series, with the incredible ballad singer Iona Fyfe (https://youtu.be/z38ELXNcNiM). Another traditional musician I reached out to was Sam Shackleton, (allegedly related to the notable Artic explorer, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton) or Sorley, if you prefer the Gaelic spelling. Sam, a student of traditional music, Scottish culture, history and the Gaelic language invited us with open arms into his home in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotla...

Sam Shackleton, "The Gypsy Davey" // GemsOnVHS™
Some of y'all might remember the first recording in this series of Highland adventures with Sam Shackleton and Tom from Fandabi Dozi ( https://youtu.be/2GMWY4mZihI ). Tom is a enthusiast of all things historical and Scottish, who was kind enough to take us up to his little cottage on the Loch for some pints, songs and stories. You can see our full discussion of the historic bards of the Highlands here on his channel ( https://youtu.be/nj9R18bFNZQ ).
You may notice Sam's breath visible as he sings. That isn't special effects, it was just that fucking cold. We got our water from a well in buckets, had big laughs and plucked banjos and guitars all night long. Sam Shackleton, "House Carpenter," // GemsOnVHS™
This is the first recording from my latest trip to Scotland, where I was staying with my good friend, the banjo player and scholar Sam Shackleton. I'd been there once before, some years ago, traveling around trying to meet the best musicians north of Hadrian's wall (https://youtu.be/67eY_u0dwSc). Sam's name had been passed around, as he is a well known busker in the area. The only banjo player on the Royal Mile, he spent many long days and nights in the shadow of the castle, giving folks the rowdiest traditional twang they've probably ever experienced. He welcomed us with open arms, and we stayed an unfortunately short time, swearing to return. And so, return we have.
Funny enough, I returned just in time to watch him graduate. More on that wild night later, but for now, enjoy Sam on one...

Anthony Simpkins ft. Sam Shackleton & Lucia , "Abilene" // GemsOnVHS™
When I was in Scotland, there was a little spot Matt Heckler had told me about. The Pianodrome, it was a called. A venue, a colosseum of used and neglected piano parts, in a warehouse outside Edinburgh. They let us drop by for a visit and a song, and we filmed this one of Anthony together with hometown hero, banjo playin' Sam "Scotsjitsu" Shackleton on harmonica and Lucia, visiting from Sweden.
This is an old cover of a song my friend Ezra introduced me to. I always thought it was about Abilene, Texas, which was strange because there's nothing all that nice about that town. Later I found out it was written for some old western movie and was actually about Abilene, Kansas. Go figure. Never been. Anyway, here is the version I heard;

Sam Shackleton, "Scottish Cowboy" // GemsOnVHS™
I found Tom, or as he is known far and wide online, "Fandabi Dozi", admittedly through the YouTube algorithm. As always, they know too much about me, and they knew my love for all thing history, Celtic and specifically Scottish spans far and wide. His videos on his 180,000k subscriber+ @FandabiDozi YouTube channel of survival in what would have been historically accurate 17th century equipment intrigued me. I was traveling to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, to study and record with Scottish studies major Sam Shackleton, whom i'd recorded year previous (https://youtu.be/67eY_u0dwSc). Sam, himself well versed in the history of bards, the traveling musicians of old times, recommended we reach out to Tom and venture in the Highlands, a place ripe with history.

Sam, a student of traditional music, Scottish culture, history and the Gaelic language invited us with open arms into his home in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, and showed us a night on the town i'll never forget. We drank our fair share of pints, caught some incredible sessions packed into pubs the size of American closets, and talked of Scottish independence late into the night.
Sam has been deep in traditional study at University the past couple years, and busking on the streets of Edinburgh. You can always tell a busker from a studio musician, I like to think. Buskers are louder, more emotive, a throwback to a time of traveling Bards, before amplification. You have only moments to impress a passerby for tips, and it forces you to hone your craft. Sorley lives up to his moniker, "the Bard", and puts on a show. This won't be the last time we meet, as I hope to return to Scotland for more recording, and Sam is keen to visit the Appalachian mountains hes heard so much about, where so many of his ancestors (and ours!) emigrated.
This song is a perfect example of the cross-Atlantic trade in culture, and you can learn more about it here

Tom is such a class guy, I reached out to him expecting nothing in particular but offering to collaborate while I was in Scotland, and he was super into it and agreed to meet us for a weekend out. Another cool thing that happened with this recording trip, I introduced Sam Shackleton to the Mary Wallopers in Ireland. That was a wild weekend, and now they're on tour together in England, so that's cool.

More on that wild night later, but for now, enjoy Sam on one of the most beautiful peaks i've ever seen, overlooking all of Edinburgh, the capitol of Scotland. Arthur's Seat, a fittingly epic view for a truly epic ballad. You can imagine the ancestors standing in that very spot, reciting that very song, which is hundreds of years old itself. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Daemon_Lover)
This song is out today on his new album!

Early in 2020 I went exploring in Scotland, trying to trace the steps of my personal hero, Alan Lomax. My own trip was much briefer, but we managed to make contact with some truly incredible songwriters and traditionalists. One of them was Sam, or Sorley if you prefer the Gaelic language name. Located in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, Sam opened his home and heart wide to our small crew. He was more than eager to show us the city he calls home, tell us about Scottish history and take us on an unofficial pub crawl, drinking me under the table in the process. This is a beautiful original of his own, played in his living room, where we enjoyed an early morning sampling of local whiskey.
I hope to go back to Scotland one day to further investigate the long history of folk songs, with Sam, who invited us to return anytime. I also think a cross-Atlantic exchange would be incredible, so don't be surprised if you find Sam and me trekking across the Appalachian mountains in search of the Scottish ballads that landed here all those years ago.

It's a pairing that could not be more perfect - we really think you should go see one of these epic shows and support these dudes who have traveled across the sea to play songs for us. We wish them all the luck!
If you're not seeing anything close to where you live, no worries. Sam has a stellar album called "Causeway Recordings" and a few singles and an EP to dive into. You should check it out. The arrangements are stripped-down and pure, we like it that way around here.
As always, big thanks to our Patreon members for helping make our projects. Your support allows us to dive deep into real music all over the world. We thank you.
cheers,
Matthew Fowler

The Scottish cowboy, or as they called them drovers, would run cattle from grazing the highlands all the way down to England's markets. They'd have to avoid major towns of course; no one wants a herd of cattle tromping through their garden. So they roamed the lonely stretches of hills and mountains, the backroads and rough trails, with their songs and stories. Very reminiscent of the cowboys of the American West, and rightfully so, as many of them immigrated to the United States during the Highland clearances. This Loch that Tom brought us to, with its charming little cottage and epic views, was inspiring to say the least. By day we roamed the shoreline, by night we enjoyed Guinness and fireside tunes, and I couldn't help but feel a connection to the times before. Albeit a more comfortable version of that.
More discussion of the history is coming in an episode with Tom on his channel, stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy this song by Sam, off his new album. You can find more from Sam here;
