K-141 Kursk (full Russian name Атомная Подводная Лодка «Курск» (АПЛ «Курск»), Atomnaya Podvodnaya Lodka "Kursk" (APL "Kursk"), meaning "Nuclear-powered submarine Kursk") was an Oscar-II class nuclear-powered cruise-missile submarine of the Russian Navy which was lost with all hands when it sank in the Barents Sea on 12 August 2000. It was a Project 949A Антей (Antey, Antaeus; NATO reporting name "Oscar II") submarine.
Work on building Kursk began in 1990 at Severodvinsk, near Arkhangelsk. Launched in 1994, it was commissioned in December of that year. It was the penultimate Oscar II class submarine designed and approved in the Soviet era.
Capabilities
The Antey design represented the highest achievement of Soviet nuclear submarine technology. They were the largest attack submarines ever built. It was built to defeat an entire United States aircraft carrier group. A single Type 65 torpedo carried a 450kg (990lb) warhead powerful enough to sink an aircraft carrier. Both missiles and torpedoes could be equipped with nuclear warheads. She was 30ft (9.1m) longer than any other Oscar I-class submarine. The senior officers had individual staterooms and the entire crew had access to a gymnasium.
Archaeology indicates that the site of Kursk was settled in the 5th or 4th centuryBCE. The settlement was fortified and included Slavs at least as early as the 8th centuryCE.
The first written record of Kursk is dated 1032. It was mentioned as one of Severian towns by Prince Igor in The Tale of Igor's Campaign: "Saddle, brother, your swift steeds. As to mine, they are ready, saddled ahead, near Kursk; as to my Kurskers, they are famous knights—swaddled under war-horns, nursed under helmets, fed from the point of the lance; to them the trails are familiar, to them the ravines are known, the bows they have are strung tight, the quivers, unclosed, the sabers, sharpened; themselves, like gray wolves, they lope in the field, seeking for themselves honor, and for their prince, glory."
Kursk's first run was at the Young Vic in London in 2009; it had a second run at the same theatre in 2010. The play was directed by Mark Espiner and Dan Jones for the theatre company Sound & Fury. It featured set design by Jon Bausor and starred Tom Espiner and Laurence Mitchell. The play utilised a split-level set, which the audience were free to walk around. It was also performed at the Drill Hall in Edinburgh in 2009 and at the Sydney Opera House in 2011.
Background
The Kursk, a nuclear submarine, sank in the Barents Sea in 2000, killing all 118 soldiers and officers on board. In order to recreate the experiences of submariners, the directors visited HMNB Devonport, spoke to naval advisers and spent time on an attack submarine.
Overview
Kursk tells the story of the sinking of the Kursk from the perspective of the crew of a nearby British submarine. When the explosion of the Kursk is heard the captain of the British vessel is faced with a decision as to whether to go to its aid. The play addresses the question of what would have occurred had a British submarine been watching the Kursk, whether its crew would have intervened in the disaster, and the accompanying ethical and political dilemmas.
Trapped at the bottom of the Barents Sea, distraught Russian Navy personnel are in a fight to survive as one catastrophe follows another onboard their embattled submarine. Each of those men is faced with unimaginable terror. Don't miss today's insane new video that analyzes everything that went wrong for the Kursk Submarine crew, and why the Russian Navy was handicapped to help.

With the Kursk fully out of the water, Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov, top Naval officials and a team of about 40 investigators observed a moment of silence before stepping onto the submarine's deck.
Ustinov sent clear instructions to investigators as to what they should do once the submarine has been dried off.
Russian authorities promise that in two or three days the Kursk would be sufficiently dry to begin investigating its interior in the hope of finding the exact cause of its sinking.

How Russian Kursk Submarine Disaster Happened?
In the depths of the Barrent Sea on August 12, 2000, Kursk's crew loaded type 65 kit torpedoes, also called "Fat Girl" in Russian due to their size. At 11:29 AM, however, truly seismic event, so big that it was registered 3,000 miles away in the US State of Alaska, was caused by two huge explosions that sent the Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kursk to the bottom of the Barrent Sea.

The in-depth story of the Kursk Submarine Disaster.
When it was commissioned in 1994, the nuclear submarine K-141 “Kursk” was one of the most powerful assets of the Russian Navy. The size of two jumbo jets, it was considered impenetrable, indestructible - a deadly predator lurking beneath the surface. In August 2000, for its crew, the mammoth attack sub became nothing more than a steel coffin lying on the bottom of the sea, with no way to escape.

An explosion on a nuclear-powered Russian submarine kills most of the men aboard and causes the few survivors to huddle in waterlogged and oxygen deficient rear compartments, where they anxiously await rescue. It is a race against time with oxygen levels running low as the Russian government plans the best course of action, before finally accepting help from the British and Norwegian governments.

STORYLINE:
The submarine 'Kursk' was raised to the point of its waterline on Wednesday, where its conning tower, with its shattered glass windows and red Russian eagle seal, could be seen above water.

In August 2000, the RussianOscar II-class submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea when a leak of high-test peroxide set off a chain reaction with the live warheads in the bow of the Russian submarine.
In response to a request for documents pertaining to the operation, the CIA said they could neither confirm nor deny their existence, leading to the popularization of that term.K-141 Kursk. The Kursk, a Russian nuclear submarine from 1995.
