The Russian language in Ukraine is the most common first language in the Donbass and Crimea regions, and the predominant language in large cities in the East and South of the country. The usage and status of the language (currently Ukrainian is the only state language of Ukraine) is an object of political disputes within Ukrainian society. Nevertheless, Russian is a widely used language in Ukraine in pop culture and informal and business communications.
History of Russian language in Ukraine
The East Slavic languages originated in the language spoken in Rus. Significant differences in spoken language in different regions began to be noticed after the division of the Rus lands between the Golden Horde (from about 1240) and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Lithuania eventually allied with the Kingdom of Poland in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Muscovites under the Golden Horde developed the modern Russian language, people in the northern Lithuanian sector developed Belorussian, and in the southern Polish sector Ukrainian.
Ukraine (i/juːˈkreɪn/; Ukrainian:Україна, tr.Ukraina[ukrɑˈjinɑ]) is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It is currently in dispute with Russia over the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed in 2014 but Ukraine and most of the international community still recognise as Ukrainian. Including Crimea, Ukraine has an area of 603,628km2 (233,062sqmi), making it the largest country entirely within Europe and the 46th largest country in the world, and a population of about 44.5 million, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world.
The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire, and later submerged fully into Russia. Two brief periods of independence occurred during the 20th century, once near the end of World War I and another during World War II, but both occasions would ultimately see Ukraine's territories conquered and consolidated into a Soviet republic, a situation that persisted until 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War.
The wine industry of Ukraine is well-established with long traditions. Several brands of wine from Ukraine are exported to bordering countries, the European Union, and North America.
History
A wine culture existed in today's Ukraine. Wine cultivation is in the northern part of the country (around Kiev and Chernihiv), dating back to the 11th century. Since 2000 the production as well as the export of the wines increased rapidly.
Ukraine (sports society) is a physical culture and sports association of Ukraine.
History
At the end of eighties (1987) the former sports associations of trade unions "Avanhard", "Burevestnik", "Vodnik", "Zenit", "Kolos", "Lokomotiv", and "Spartak" were united into the All-Union volunteer physical culture and sports association of trade unions (VDFSTP). After several years "Kolos" has separated from it and in 1991 VDFSTP was reorganized into the sports association of trade unions "Ukraine".

New law stokes Ukraine language tensions
With a large Russian-speaking #minority concentrated in the east and the south, #Ukraine passed a law "on ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian #language as the state language" in 2019. The former Soviet republic intends to strengthen the development of Ukrainian, whose speakers were oppressed, first by the Russian Empire, then by the #USSR, which is also accused by Kiev of genocide in the 1930s.

War in Ukraine: no place for Russian language and heritage in Odesa • FRANCE 24 English
The Russian invasion that began a year ago has left an indelible mark on Ukrainian society. The Russian language is slowly losing ground to Ukrainian, a fact often used by President Vladimir Putin to justify the invasion. Ukraine’s culture including literature, music and art are particularly affected by the growing phenomenon of de-Russification. FRANCE 24 reports from Odesa, a coastal city in southern Ukraine, where Russian language and culture are deeply rooted.

Around 30% of Ukrainians consider Russian to be their native language, and Russian remains the ‘most spoken language’ in Ukraine - and that was even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine starting on the 24th of February, 2022. But why are there so many Russian speakers in Ukraine? How different are the Russian and Ukrainian languages? How did the Russian language first come to Ukraine? How was language addressed in Ukraine in the Soviet Period? How does language affect politics in Ukraine? Find out answers to these questions and more in today’s video...

The East Slavic languages constitute one of three regional subgroups of the Slavic languages, however, by number of speakers, East Slavic languages far outnumber the West Slavic and South Slavic language families. These languages are currently spoken natively throughout Eastern Europe, and eastwards to Siberia and the Russian Far East, while being also spoken as a lingua franca in many regions of Caucasus and Central Asia.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.
Submit your recordings to [email protected].
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Russian language is still widely spoken in Estonia and the country is now considering whether to limit its use.
