Eastern Ukraine or East Ukraine (Ukrainian:Східна Україна, Skhidna Ukrayina) generally refers to territories of Ukraine east of the Dnieper river, particularly Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts. Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia Oblasts sometimes are also regarded as Eastern Ukraine. In regards to traditional territories the area encompasses portions of the southern Sloboda Ukraine, Donbas, the western Azov Littoral (Pryazovia).
Almost a third of the country's population lives within the region, which includes several cities with population of around a million. Within Ukraine, the region is the most highly urbanized, particularly portions of central Kharkiv Oblast, south-western Luhansk Oblast, central, northern and eastern areas of Donetsk Oblast.
Geography
The region stretches from southern areas of the Central Russian Upland to the northern shores of the Sea of Azov, from the eastern border with Russia to Black Sea and Dnieperlowlands (including the left banks of Dnieper) to the west. Aside of Dnieper, the major river of eastern Ukraine is Seversky Donets which gave the name to the main economical region for that portion of the country, Donbas (Donets basin).
Ukraine (i/juːˈkreɪn/; Ukrainian:Україна, tr.Ukraina[ukrɑˈjinɑ]) is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It is currently in dispute with Russia over the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed in 2014 but Ukraine and most of the international community still recognise as Ukrainian. Including Crimea, Ukraine has an area of 603,628km2 (233,062sqmi), making it the largest country entirely within Europe and the 46th largest country in the world, and a population of about 44.5 million, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world.
The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire, and later submerged fully into Russia. Two brief periods of independence occurred during the 20th century, once near the end of World War I and another during World War II, but both occasions would ultimately see Ukraine's territories conquered and consolidated into a Soviet republic, a situation that persisted until 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War.
The wine industry of Ukraine is well-established with long traditions. Several brands of wine from Ukraine are exported to bordering countries, the European Union, and North America.
History
A wine culture existed in today's Ukraine. Wine cultivation is in the northern part of the country (around Kiev and Chernihiv), dating back to the 11th century. Since 2000 the production as well as the export of the wines increased rapidly.
Ukraine (sports society) is a physical culture and sports association of Ukraine.
History
At the end of eighties (1987) the former sports associations of trade unions "Avanhard", "Burevestnik", "Vodnik", "Zenit", "Kolos", "Lokomotiv", and "Spartak" were united into the All-Union volunteer physical culture and sports association of trade unions (VDFSTP). After several years "Kolos" has separated from it and in 1991 VDFSTP was reorganized into the sports association of trade unions "Ukraine".
Why would Ukraine use cluster munitions to attack Russian positions?
Ukraine's military has made gains across the country, forcing Russian forces back from land previously occupied since Moscow's invasion.
Now, with established positions, could Ukrainian troops use cluster munitions to target Russian strongholds in the east of Ukraine?
Ukrainian forces have used the weapons during the conflict but what might be the tactical benefit of using them now?

A young couple celebrates their wedding in front of a bombed-out building.
An old man sweeps up the debris caused by missile strikes, bewildered by Russia’s aggression.
Investigators dig up bodies from a mass burial site in a forest.
People gather in a bunker for a writers’ festival.
These are the stories Europe correspondent Steve Cannane uncovers as he travels through eastern Ukraine in the wake of an extraordinary military victory against Russia.
Liberated from occupation, people are sharing stories of trauma and hardship, hope and survival.
70-year-old Anatolii Garagatyi, an amateur cameraman with a YouTube channel, recounts how he spent one hundred days locked up in a police cell. When he refused his Russian captors’ request to make a propaganda video, he was tortured.
“It doesn’t matter how much longer I live but I don’t want my soul to encounter my parents and for them to think I’m a traitor.”
In a quiet forest outside the town of Izyum, investigators dig up hundreds of bodies from a mass burial site.
“For me, it’s not debatable. It’s war crimes,” says the Defence Minister, Oleksii Reznikov. “It’s the next package for a future tribunal. We call it Nuremberg 2.”
Tetiana Pylypchuk, the director of Kharkiv’s Museum of Ukrainian Literature, has organised a literary festival in a bunker. It’s a show of defiance against an adversary who wants to obliterate their culture.
“Holding such events in a city which is under threat… is a very strong message to the enemy.”
Humiliated by its recent losses, Russia is retaliating with missile strikes at power plants and vital infrastructure. As winter approaches, many are living without gas, power and water.
But Ukrainians’ resolve to defeat their invader has only hardened.
“We have to survive. We have to fight for our land, for our family, for our houses,” says Reznikov.
“What are you talking about? We’ve already won!” says Garagatyi. “They’ve got no idea what they’re doing here. Cowards. They’re cowards.”

News continues to be reported by soldiers who have not wanted to fight since the beginning of the clashes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues. As the unrest grew within the Russian army, it became clear that some soldiers refused to fight and go to the front by taking advantage of the technical material they found… in early April, when soldiers of a Russian military elite brigade were told to prepare for a second deployment in Ukraine, fear erupted among the soldiers. The unit, which was stationed in the remote east of Russia during peace, first entered Ukraine from Belarus with the start of the war at the end of february and experienced fierce clashes with the Ukrainian forces. A Russian soldier who does not reveal his real name and calls himself only Dmitri said, "it was soon understood that not everyone agrees and does not want to execute the order. Many of us didn't want to go back," he said, "I want to go back to my family, but not in a coffin." Dmitri said he refused to reinvade his commanders with eight of his friends. "They were furious.

Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Warfare continues with the aftermath of the first phase of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 2022 (https://youtu.be/yBZPE9o2gHU). Previously we talked about the build-up to the new stage of the Russo-Ukrainian War, how Putin's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine continued, and covered events between February 24th and April 7th, as we saw how Ukraine managed to win the first phase of the war. This set up the second phase of the war - battle of Donbas. In the previous video we covered the events of April of 2022 (https://youtu.be/K2N_fHKrWIg) including the sinking of the rocket cruiser Moskva - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvB2CPpdTMY, and how the conflict turned into the war of attrition in May (https://youtu.be/D-93q4GMFT0) and continued with Russia's best month in June (https://youtu.be/SIm4mQihHdA). In the video dedicated to July - the 5th month of the war, we talked about the arrival of the HIMARS systems which strengthened Ukrainian positions and changed the war (https://youtu.be/WS0D0X8V6rg), while this video will focus on the events of August, as we will see how Russian logistics and manpower problems were worsened by the HIMARS strikes, the risk and intrigue around the Zaporizhia (Enerhodar) Nuclear Powerplant and the long expected beginning of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in Kherson (https://youtu.be/2hZoQ4xebGw). Previously we discussed the Kherson counteroffensive in the first 2 weeks of September and showed how the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kharkiv Oblast - Balakliya-Izium counter-offensive succeeded, pushing the Russians across Oskil and Lyman (https://youtu.be/gJRjKuss_Co) In the second half of September, Ukraine liberated even more territory in Kherson (https://youtu.be/S7usqwT-ty4), while this video will talk about the events of the beginning of October, including the attack on the Crimean - Kerch bridge.

In East Ukraine there is the Donbas industrial zone, which has strongly influenced the course of military operations in that area both in the wars of the 20th century and and also the war between Russia and Ukraine. In this video we will look at operations in and around that area in the Russian Civil war and also in the first part of the Second World War.
