Oldest Language in the World?
It is difficult to determine the oldest language in the world with certainty because languages have been evolving and changing over thousands of years, and many ancient languages have been lost over time. However, based on current linguistic research, there are several contenders for the title of oldest language in the world.
One of the oldest languages still in use today is Tamil, which is spoken in southern India and parts of Sri Lanka. Tamil has been in use for at least 2,000 years and has a rich literary tradition that dates back to the early centuries CE.
Another contender for the title of oldest language is Sanskrit, an ancient language of India that is still used today in Hindu religious ceremonies and classical literature. Sanskrit is thought to have been in use for over 3,500 ye...

What Is the Oldest Language Still Spoken Today?
Let's take a fascinating linguistic journey back in time to discover the oldest languages known to humankind! Deep within the annals of history, we find languages like Sumerian, dating back to around 4,000 BCE, spoken in ancient Mesopotamia. Then there's Egyptian, with its mysterious hieroglyphs, originating around 3,200 BCE, captivating us with tales of pharaohs and pyramids. Traveling eastward, we encounter Tamil, a Dravidian language spoken in South India, boasting a rich history dating back over 2,200 years.

The Tower of Babel is one of humankind's early attempts to explain the variety of languages spoken across the earth. Thousands of years later, philologists and linguists studied the natural evolution of language. So then, what's the true story of language history?
In this video, we'll look at the traditional interpretation of the Tower of Babel story: the Adamic language once split into 72 languages to confuse people. Then we'll consider how historical linguistics compared cognates, established language families and traced related languages back to a common proto-language.
Right where historical linguistics hits mysteries and dead ends, you'll meet the "long rangers". These linguistic mavericks dared to go further back in time. Finally, briefly see why mainstream linguistics dismisses long-range findings as pseudoscientific.

Dan Everett brings us back in time to the Homo Erectus to share how language began and why it is the ultimate evolutionary tool to share knowledge. Dan Everett was born in Southern California. He completed an undergraduate degree in biblical studies from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and his Master’s and ScD in linguistics at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Brazil. From 1977, he has regularly conducted research on the Pirahã language of Brazil. He has also conducted research on Tzeltal (Mexico), Selish (USA), Arawan (Brazil), Satere (Brazil), Wari’ (Brazil) among many others. He has published fourteen books and more than 110 articles and has lectured around the world on his research. He converted to Christianity at 17 years of age and was a committed, evangelical Christian until abandoning his faith due to lessons he learned from the Pirahãs (as discussed in Don’t sleep, there are snakes). His most recent books are Dark Matter of the Mind: The Culturally Articulated Unconscious (University of Chicago Press) and How Language Began: The Story of Humanity's Greatest Invention (W.W. Norton/Liveright). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
