Donkey Kong Country is a platformer sub-series based off of the original Donkey Kong franchise that started in 1994 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The series starred Donkey Kong as the protagonist with a cast of primate allies and animal companions. The Kong Family was originally accosted by the Kremlings, but they were replaced by newer enemies. It was originally developed by Rare with the series going on hiatus when they were bought by Microsoft. The series then was picked back up by Retro Studios with Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii in 2010. Donkey Kong Country also spanned different spin-offs too with the handheld conversions with the Donkey Kong Land and a racing spin-off, Diddy Kong Racing on the Nintendo 64.
