- "It's ironic, isn't it? I've spent my whole life amassing this power and control, thinking somehow it would protect me. If I believed in God, I'd say her sense of humor is for shit."
- ―Jeri Hogarth[src]

After taking on the case of suspected murderer Hope Shlottman, Hogarth became involved in the hunt for Kilgrave which soon resulted in Hogarth's personal and professional life crumbling. As a result of her dealings with Jones and Kilgrave, Hogarth decided to hire Foggy Nelson to deal with any cases involving vigilantes. Upon Danny Rand's return home, Hogarth acted as Rand's personal lawyer to reinstate him back at his company, winning the case for him.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Childhood[]
- "I grew up in a trailer the size of this dining room with four siblings. You know what kids do to the poor kid whose clothes don't fit? They make sure that school is as much a living hell as home. Everything I have, I built from nothing."
- ―Jeri Hogarth to Inez Green[src]
Jeri Hogarth grew up in a small trailer park with four siblings. She was frequently bullied at school for being poor.[3] When she was eight, she attended a funeral with a yellow dress.[4] Her father soon came down with brain cancer. He was left in a state of drooling and not moving for two years before his eventual death. Hogarth grew up not wanting a life like his. Later, she became estranged from her family.[5]
College Life[]
- "Our senior year, during finals, I met Wendy in the stacks, okay? I went down on her in the library bathroom that same night. We slept together for three months before you found out. It was the challenge, the thrill of having you both."
- ―Jeri Hogarth to Kith Lyonne[src]
In college, Hogarth met a woman named Kith, whom she fell in love with. The two shared a romantic relationship and Hogarth became infatuated with Kith's cello playing. On one occasion, Hogarth recorded Kith's playing on a tape and kept it for years.[6] In their senior year, Hogarth met a woman named Wendy Ross. She slept together with Ross and did so for three months before Kith finally found out, ending their relationship.[7] Although their relationship was over, Hogarth still donated to Kith's art school every year with an anonymous name.[8]
Intern for Rand Enterprises[]
- "You were an intern in the legal department in my dad's office? You called his secretary Margaret a hatchet-faced bitch. I was standing right there. You gave me five bucks to keep quiet."
- ―Danny Rand to Jeri Hogarth[src]
Hogarth was employed by Rand Enterprises as an intern for Wendell Rand. She did not have an office at Rand Enterprises Building, only a table next to the copy machine, putting files under the table leg because of the uneven floor. During her time there, Hogarth made a rivalry with Rand's secretary Margaret whom she called "hatchet-faced bitch". However, she was heard by Danny Rand what forced Hogarth to bribed him $5 to not tell anyone about that. Danny then nicknamed her as "J-Money" and they became close to each other. When Rand family was killed in a plane crash, Hogarth attended their funeral and showed her respect by taking care of their gravestones.[2]
Marrying Wendy Ross[]
- "If she orders you the tiramisu and there is a diamond ring at the bottom, you'll think nothing could ever make you stop feeling happy. Don't choke on it."
- ―Wendy Ross-Hogarth to Pam[src]
Hogarth asked her girlfriend Wendy Ross to marry her by putting an engagement ring at the bottom of a tiramisu dessert when they were at dinner. Ross almost choked on the ring before she discovered it.[9] During their marriage, Wendy Ross-Hogarth would sacrifice opportunities and money so that Hogarth could complete law school.[10] Ross-Hogarth took Hogarth to Paris to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary, but Hogarth spent much of her time on the phone with a client.[11]
Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz[]
Hiring Jessica Jones[]
Hogarth offered Jessica Jones a job as the private investigator for Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz, but Jones refused the offer, even using foul language to accentuate the point. Hogarth was disappointed because even though Jones' style was unorthodox and received various complaints, it was effective. Hogarth decided to hire someone else to be the firm's investigator.[1]
Stripper Case[]
- "I need a summons served to the owner of several gentleman's clubs, his name is Gregory Spheeris. An exotic dancer fell off the stage when a pole came lose, severe concussion, some permanent brain damage. Spheeris claims she was always that stupid."
- ―Jeri Hogarth to Jessica Jones[src]
Hogarth was walking by the receptionist's desk at Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz Office as Jessica Jones arrived. Jones immediately asked if she had a new case Jones could investigate. Hogarth told her that someone already had that job; Jones bragged that whoever he was not as good as she was. Hogarth agreed, reminding Jones that she was offered the position but adamantly refused it while also cursing at Hogarth and her staff; Jones asked her to excuse it by saying she was more than likely drunk before reminding Hogarth how much she needed her methods to get the work done.
Knowing that Jones' methods were often effective and could also be useful, Hogarth took Jones to her office and handed her a subpoena for Gregory Spheeris, a strip-club owner who was being sued by an ex-employee from the SoHo House who had fallen when the pole she was using broke, causing her brain damage, but Spheeris believed that she was always dim-witted. Hogarth told Jones that Spheeris had too many bodyguards for anyone to serve him. Surprised that Hogarth was representing just an ordinary person, as opposed to a major company or rich client, Jones took on the case.
A few days later, Jones sent a picture that she had served Spheeris a subpoena; however, Spheeris' lawyer had complained that Jones had lifted Spheeris' car over her head and threatened to blast him with her laser eyes. Hogarth, looking out the window at the city at night, called Jones to ask what happened and she confirmed the confrontation. Pam quietly came behind her, kissing her and caressing her softly. Distracted, Hogarth complimented Jones on her work and told her that she would be paid soon. Then, quickly ending the conversation, Hogarth turned her attention back towards Pam.
The next day, Hogarth got a phone call from Jones, requesting to get her money for the Spheeris job immediately; Hogarth told her that she knew the procedure with the payroll department. Jones asked for a loan and was quickly denied as Hogarth recommended she instead ask a friend. As Hogarth, who was leaving for the day, approached the receptionist desk, Pam walked slowly toward her, smiling. Hogarth ignored her and turned to Wendy Ross-Hogarth who kissed her and walked with her with her arm around her as they went to eat at a restaurant where they had made reservations for the night.[1]
Defending Hope Shlottman[]
- "I'm your new attorney. You should be more excited, you stick with the public defender they assigned you and you'll end up spending your next two life times behind bars. Jessica Jones sent me, there is a possibility that your claims may be cooperated by another victim, looks like you're a mascot for a macomb club."
- ―Jeri Hogarth to Hope Shlottman[src]
Hogarth had a meeting with Jessica Jones who demanded that she take on the case of Hope Shlottman who had murdered her parents. Hogarth refused, believing the evidence showed Shlottman as guilty and Hogarth had no intention of losing, although Jones insisted that Shlottman was being controlled by Kilgrave. During the conversation, Pam interrupted, saying that Wendy Ross-Hogarth was calling, Hogarth insisted she would call her back. Jones told Hogarth that she would owe her a favor if she took the case so Hogarth told her to get proof. As Jones exited, Pam returned and told Hogarth that her wife had learned of their affair.
When Jones found David Kurata who could help prove Kilgrave's existence, Hogarth then took on the case and went to Northeastern Correctional Facility where Shlottman was now being detained. She explained that she was her new lawyer as her public defender would get her a double life sentence. Hogarth then noted that Jones still believed in her innocence and was working to find others who were abused by Kilgrave. Shlottman looked up, wondering if there were others besides Jones and her to whom this happened, then Hogarth told Shlottman to reveal all she knew.[12]
Hogarth decided to file for divorce from Wendy Ross-Hogarth,[13] asking Desmond Tobey to handle the case.[9] Jessica Jones abruptly entered Hogarth's office, demanding she has a press conference to defend the actions of Hope Shlottman to the public. Jones accused her cowardice; Hogarth cited that what she does is a tried-and-true strategy and she was not going to jeopardize her credibility by openly stating that she believed in mind control. Hogarth told Jones to bring her other victims of Kilgrave, starting with herself, but Jones said she was too busy trying to capture Kilgrave to do Hogarth's job for her.[13]
Talk Radio Interview[]
- "Certainly, if there are other people who feel they have been controlled by this Kilgrave character they are more than welcome to contact my office but it is more likely that my client experienced a psychotic breakdown."
"Hope has no history of mental illness, has shown no evidence-"
"Trish, sounds like you believe this Kilgrave is real." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Trish Walker[src]
Hogarth was called by Trish Walker, who wanted an interview with Hope Shlottman; Hogarth agreed and they scheduled it. During the interview, Hogarth held her phone to Shlottman as she described Kilgrave's power. After the interview, Hogarth told Walker that Shlottman was clearly insane. Walker defended Shlottman, all a plan of Hogarth to have Walker persuading the public that telepaths could exist with the Avengers. When Kilgrave called WNEX Station, asking why Walker was insulting him, Hogarth witnessed as Shlottman became erratic upon hearing his voice.[13]
Confronting Ross[]
- "You think if you break us up that I will crawl back to you. Read my face, never gonna happen."
- ―Jeri Hogarth to Wendy Ross-Hogarth[src]
While Hogarth was negotiating with Larry, who represented a company that caused puppies to be poisoned by his client's product, Jessica Jones ignored Pam and entered Hogarth's office. Jones demanded to know if Audrey Eastman was referred to her by Desmond Tobey. Irked, Hogarth confirmed that Eastman was a client of Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz and that Tobey was a trustworthy lawyer who was working on her divorce. As she exited, Hogarth told Jones to relax because she seemed even more paranoid than she usually was.
Hogarth chose to take Pam to a favorite restaurant for lunch. While the two walked, Pam tried to convince her that they should take a holiday to Rome, however, Hogarth was distracted looking at her phone and seeing that she had even more people arriving about their encounters with Kilgrave ever since the Trish Talk interview. Pam noted that she felt that Hogarth had been changing, now spending far too much time worrying about work, and wanted the woman with whom she fell in love to return to her again. Admitting her fault, Hogarth decided to give Pam her full attention from this moment onwards.
As they were about to enter the establishment, they saw Wendy Ross-Hogarth exiting; Wendy could not believe that Hogarth was taking Pam to the same restaurant where they had gotten engaged. Wendy told Pam, who was visibly upset, how Jeri proposed before rudely telling her not to chock on the ring. Hogarth retorted that if Wendy had hoped to break up her new relationship, it would not result in them reconciling. Wendy left speechless. Hogarth, thinking of the restaurant as common property, said that Wendy was not getting it in the divorce; however, Pam, refusing to eat there, said that Wendy was.[9]
Kilgrave Victim Support Group[]
- "Kilgrave wanted a leather jacket, live chello music and a flattering smile of a pretty girl. What a waste. Could solve so many problems with his gift."
"Gift?!"
"I just meant if he was on our side." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Jessica Jones[src]
Hogarth returned to the Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz Office to find it flooded with people who wanted to prove that they were victims of Kilgrave; not wanting to deal with them, she called Jessica Jones. Jones protested, saying that she had other cases, including pursuing Kilgrave, but Hogarth invoked that Jones owed her a favor. Hogarth wanted Jones to find dirt on Wendy Ross-Hogarth so she can use it during the divorce proceedings and Jones said she would try.
Her attention then turned to the flood of new clients and agreed to interview each of them one by one to see if they were telling the truth. In a conference room, Hogarth and Jones, with a cameraman, began listening to the testimonies of different people who blamed Kilgrave for their unusual behaviors, such as a young pregnant girl and a man who robbed a store. Often, the people were not victims of Kilgrave; however, there were a few, including Jackson and Clair who Jones knew were victims by their knowing key nuances of the telepath.
After the interviews, Jones collected the people; Hogarth noted that it was a Kilgrave Victim Support Group and asked Jones if she would participate. Jones reminded Hogarth that Jones was busy as well as anti-social. Hogarth noted that Kilgrave could be someone with whom she could work with, claiming that what he was being wasteful with his gifts. Jones became extremely offended by Hogarth's comments and hit the paned glass of the conference room, cracking it before storming out. Hogarth later called Jones asking if she was trying to pay her debt; Jones told her not at that moment.[9]
Hope Shlottman's Attack[]
- "Hope will not speak to me, she will not ask for isolation so Garcia's free to do it again. Expensive and exasperating, your turn."
- ―Jeri Hogarth to Jessica Jones[src]
Hogarth was informed that Hope Shlottman was attacked and decided to call Jessica Jones while in her car with Pam sleeping on her chest. Jones mocked Hogarth by asking if this was a booty call but Hogarth was not impressed so Jones noted she had not found any dirt on Wendy Ross-Hogarth yet. Hogarth told her to keep looking before informing her of the attack on Shlottman, causing Jones to curse in frustration.
The next morning Hogarth met with Jones outside the Northeastern Correctional Facility and explained that Kilgrave was seemingly not involved. She went on to explain that she had been forced to bribe a guard to find out exactly what had happened as Shlottman was refusing to speak to her and had learned that Sissy Garcia was responsible. Hogarth frustratingly told Jones that this case was getting too expensive before leaving for Jones to deal with the situation herself as Shlottman was refusing to accuse Garcia who could easily attack her again.
Back in her office, Hogarth was called by Jones who was rude to Pam on the phone before asking about getting medication for Shlottman's abortion for the baby Kilgrave had fathered with her. Frustrated, Hogarth ranted about loving Pam who was being very patient with everything that was happening while also helping her with the case until Jones hung up. Hogarth then confirmed to Pam that she was serious about marrying her and Pam told her that she wanted to as well but only once Hogarth was finally divorced as Pam was catholic, leaving Hogarth alone to consider her current options.
Hogarth met with Jones at Northeastern Correctional Facility where Jones gave Shlottman the pills for her abortion which she took without any hesitation. Jones then spoke with Hogarth and requested that she stay with Shlottman while she suffered the effects of the drugs through a likely very difficult night, promising to find dirt on Wendy Ross-Hogarth in exchange, explaining that she was willing to dangle Ross-Hogarth off a ledge to sign the divorce papers, which Hogarth did not object to due to her great frustration about Ross-Hogarth's attitude towards their rough divorce settlements.
As requested, Hogarth stayed by Shlottman's bedside as she suffered from horrific pains from the medication that would kill her unborn child. Considering the possibilities that could be had by having Kilgrave's powers for herself, Hogarth spoke to the nurse in charge and requested that she give her the dead fetus from Shlottman and deliver it to ZALK labs, the nurse questioned her reasons but Hogarth refused to answer and told her to keep this deal quiet. With the deal made, Hogarth went and sat with Shlottman, comforting her by placing her hand gently on her head and massaging her.[14]
Jessica Jones' Terrible Plan[]
- "Supermax only houses the worst criminals. Top shelf perverts, cannibals, serial killers who make mosaics with their victim's fingernails."
"Well that's very specific."
"It's a living hell, with real demons." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Jessica Jones[src]
As Hogarth and Pam made their way towards the New York State Supreme Court Building they were confronted by Jessica Jones who demanded a lawyer. When Jones revealed that a temp had given her their location, Hogarth told Pam to fire the temp. Jones promised that Wendy Ross-Hogarth would sign the divorce papers then asked Hogarth what she would need to do to get locked away in a maximum-security prison by the end of the night. Although Hogarth was reluctant to discuss this matter in case Jones was planning a crime, she admitted it housed only serial killers and rapists. Jones told Hogarth to be at the 15th Precinct Police Station that night and claimed that something had already been done.
Back in the Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz Office, Hogarth was confronted by her ex-wife who handed her an envelope. While Ross-Hogarth spoke to Pam, Hogarth opened the envelope only to discover it contained their email correspondence over the years which proved that Hogarth had committed crimes during a past case and Ross-Hogarth would blackmail her with. Although Pam lied to defend her actions, Ross-Hogarth expressed her disgust at Jones' attack against her before demanding seventy five percent of her assets.
Hogarth was informed that Jones had been arrested for allegedly murdering her neighbor Ruben by ripping off his head. Hogarth arrived furious at Jones and told Detective Oscar Clemons that she would be inciting mental incompetence for the incident. Jones, however, insisted that she needed to be locked in supermax, when Hogarth insisted that she refused to do this Jones told Clemons that Hogarth would no longer be her lawyer, as a result Clemons told her to leave and promised to get a public defender for Jones' upcoming case to replace Hogarth instead.[15]
Dealing with Wendy Ross-Hogarth[]
- "I like you when you aren't trying to take my livelihood."
"You don't love me anymore."
"Do you still want that? After all of this, you want that?" - ―Jeri Hogarth and Wendy Ross-Hogarth[src]
Hogarth had a meeting with Wendy Ross-Hogarth and her lawyer at the Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz Office where Hogarth's lawyer, Desmond Tobey insisted that the seventy-five percent she was demanded was ridiculous. Ross-Hogarth accused Hogarth of sending thugs after her before calling her a bastard before they discussed their relationship with Ross-Hogarth noting that she now had nothing and she intended now to take Hogarth's apology in the form of money.
As they were speaking Pam burst into the room and called Hogarth out to answer a call, at which point Ross-Hogarth mocked Hogarth's lover for addressing her so formally. Hogarth stepped out of the room and was told that the call was from Jessica Jones, which excited Hogarth as she believed it meant that she had dug up dirt on her ex-wife, but Pam explained that Jones was sending them a message that she was currently with Kilgrave for unknown reasons.
That night, Hogarth got another email from Ross-Hogarth threatening to expose her corruption, frustrated Hogarth looked out over New York City and cursed. Hogarth sent a text message to Jones demanded that she stop whatever she was doing and find dirt on Ross-Hogarth that she could exploit. She quickly got a reply which answered with the words bitches right before promising to do as instructed. Hogarth, however, was unaware that Kilgrave had taken Jones' phone from her and was the one sending the messages.[16]
Manipulated by Kilgrave[]
Tempted by Kilgrave's Power[]
- "You are in no position to ask me to do anything, you have absolutely nothing to help me."
"Kilgrave's seen you, Hogarth. You're already implicated."
"You set me up. God damn it." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Jessica Jones[src]
Hogarth was contacted by Jessica Jones who asked to meet her at a Decommissioned CDC Facility where she found Kilgrave was being held captive. Hogarth demanded that Jones free her prisoner noting that she had no proof to convict him, Jones, however, insisted that he was too dangerous and that she would record him using his powers. Hogarth explained that Hope Shlottman was being offered a plea bargain which she would be presenting to her. Jones noted that they just needed one jury member to believe Kilgrave's power and Jones went to convince Oscar Clemons to be the witness.
Jones left Hogarth to watch Kilgrave, noting that he had now seen his face making her a target. While waiting for Jones to return, Hogarth text with Desmond Tobey to see how her divorce case was going only to be told that she was going to have to hand over ninety percent of her assets now. Hogarth called Wendy Ross-Hogarth and reminded her that if she lost her position then Ross-Hogarth would get nothing as well before they argued about each other careers before Hogarth called her ex-wife heartless only to be hung up on as a result.
Kilgrave took the opportunity to ask Hogarth to speak to him as he requested a good lawyer before asking about her divorce troubles, claiming to have read her lips. Kilgrave revealed that Jones had moved in with him at the Jones Residence, asking if she had told Hogarth this calling her a liar. Kilgrave claimed that Jones' stories were false and denied his powers, but he did subtly hint that if he did have these powers he could make any problem, like Ross-Hogarth, disappear. But Hogarth was not swayed and instead told him to repeat that for the camera to record his confession.
Eventually, Jones returned having failed to convince Oscar Clemons to help them and Hogarth berated her for not being able to speak with Hope Shlottman. Jones explained that she planned to step into the cell and force Kilgrave to use his powers against her. While Hogarth watched and filmed, Jones entered Kilgrave's room and began mockingly seducing him before beating him half to death. Trish Walker also arrived and they watched as Kilgrave refused to use his powers until they were forced to electrocute the pair of them to save Kilgrave's life.[10]
Making Hard Choices[]
Back at the Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz Office, Hogarth considered what she had witnessed until Pam arrived and told her that Wendy Ross-Hogarth was sending the damning evidence around the offices which she had just stopped. Pam demanded that she stop Ross-Hogarth, calling her the best lawyer in New York City before seductively putting Hogarth's hand between her legs and explaining how she had fallen in love with her and telling her to end this divorce so they could finally marry each other.
Hogarth instead sent to the Northeastern Correctional Facility to meet with Hope Shlottman and offer her the plea deal, explaining that even after serving twenty years she would still have half her life to live as a free woman. Shlottman was confused by Hogarth's change in attitude and demanded to speak to Jessica Jones about the decision, but Hogarth told her to make her own decision as she was too young to understand that this was her one and only chance to regain control over her life again, but Shlottman insisted upon speaking to Jones.
Hogarth returned to the Decommissioned CDC Facility to find only Trish Walker watching over Kilgrave and recommended that Walker take a break as she did not want her losing her mind as well. Once Walker was gone, however, Hogarth told Kilgrave that she was ready to talk about his idea of helping her stop Ross-Hogarth from destroying her life. Hogarth agreed to cut the wires to stop Kilgrave from being electrocuted and went to open his cell door to set him free; however, before she could open the door she heard footsteps and returned to the desk.
Jones entered the room with Albert and Louise Thompson, Kilgrave's long lost parents who she would use to get an emotional response from her hostage. Just as the reunion began, Oscar Clemons arrived and attempted to arrest Jones, only to be threatened and handcuffed by Walker inside. While Hogarth was horrified by the many crimes that she was witnessing she was powerless to stop it and watched as the Thompson's entered their son's jail cell to confront him. Kilgrave screamed at his parents for leaving him as they argued about who was the true monster. Albert noted how Kilgrave had tortured them for years until Louise was forced to stab her own son.
Furious at the betrayal of trust, Kilgrave ordered his mother to pick up the scissors she had dropped and stab herself repeatedly in the heart. Although Jessica Jones tried to stop this, the wire Hogarth had cut prevented her from doing so as they witnessed Louise killing herself. Jones ordered everyone to run as Hogarth stole Clemons gun and escaped.[10] However, just as she reached her car, Hogarth was found by Kilgrave who had also escaped during the chaos and who put her under his control and forced her to drive him away from danger.[11]
Kilgrave's Slave[]
- "What does she want from me? That wasn't a rhetorical question, tell me!"
"She wants you to pay for what you did to her."
"I treated her better than anyone ever has."
"She wants you to pay for what you did to Hope Shlottman" - ―Kilgrave and Jeri Hogarth[src]
Having now gotten far enough away from the Decommissioned CDC Facility, Hogarth took the chance to confront Kilgrave over murdering his own mother; however, Kilgrave argued that his mother was really a barbaric monster who performed horrific experiments on her own son and vowed to kill his father as well before ordering Hogarth to take him to a doctor to treat the bullet wound he had gained from Trish Walker shooting him during his dramatic escape.
Instead of taking Kilgrave to Metro-General Hospital, Hogarth took the chance to end her divorce proceedings by taking him instead to the home of Wendy Ross-Hogarth who Kilgrave took control over immediately. Kilgrave questioned why Hogarth would take him to the home of the woman she had abused so badly but still promised that he would force her to sign the divorce papers if he felt like assisting her, claiming to be a man of his word. Ross-Hogarth then came back downstairs with her medical bag as ordered to help stitch up Kilgrave's injuries.
While Ross-Hogarth treated Kilgrave's wounds, Hogarth listened as he ranted to Ross-Hogarth about everything he had done for Jessica Jones by fixing up the Jones Residence, with Kilgrave ordering Hogarth to keep quiet. When Kilgrave asked what Jones wanted, Hogarth explained she wanted him to pay for what he had done to her and Hope Shlottman before confessing that Shlottman was pregnant with his child and that she had kept the child's remains for experimentation while also noting that Jones did not know anything about any of this.
Hogarth was then called by Jones herself and Kilgrave ordered her to allow him to listen into their conversation and to find out what happened to his father. While Hogarth claimed to be at home hiding, Jones claimed that Oscar Clemons and Kilgrave's father were gone and was most likely with Kilgrave. However, while Hogarth was trying to learn more, Ross-Hogarth saw the conversation and assumed it was with Pam, loudly interrupting and giving Jones the clue she needed about Hogarth's true whereabouts and dangerous situation.[11]
Death by 1,000 Cuts[]
While Kilgrave considered what Jessica Jones had said on the phone, Kilgrave was spooked by hearing the doorbell ring and decided to run; however, first he told Wendy Ross-Hogarth to reclaim her revenge by one thousand cuts that they had discussed, giving her a knife and telling her to kill Hogarth by cutting her. Hogarth was chased around the room by her ex-wife who continued cutting her skin and counting down, with Hogarth trying and failing to catch the knife with her bare hands.
As the cuts amassed over Hogarth's hands, face, arms, and legs, she tried desperately to escape by, but was in too much agony to get away from the blade Ross-Hogarth was swinging at her. The pair wrestled until Ross-Hogarth straddled her and continued slicing at her flesh. However, Pam stormed inside and hit Ross-Hogarth across the skull, accidentally impaling her on the table side and killing her. Jessica Jones also arrived to witness the carnage and demanded to know where Kilgrave was before confronting Hogarth for her part in Louise Thompson's tragic death by her cutting the wires.
Pam was taken to the 15th Precinct Police Station due to killing Ross-Hogarth and Hogarth agreed to act as her lawyer; however, Pam questioned how Kilgrave could have ever known about Ross-Hogarth, to begin with. Pam soon worked out that Hogarth had taken Kilgrave to her own ex-wife to sign the divorce papers and was mortified. However, Hogarth claimed that Pam alone had murdered Ross-Hogarth, claiming no responsibility for herself. Horrified, Pam told a detective that Hogarth was not her lawyer, claiming to not know who she even was.[11]
Defending Jessica Jones[]
- "I will have more than enough testimony to convince a jury that this man forced Jessica to snap his own neck."
"That's your defense? He committed suicide?"
"Guilt, the guilt was unbearable. He couldn't live with all the pain that he had caused. Either way, Jessica did not have a choice." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Samantha Reyes[src]
Soon Jessica Jones caught up with Kilgrave and managed to break his neck during their final fight. Hogarth acted as Jones' lawyer and defender her against Samantha Reyes, who argued that Jones had murdered Kilgrave in cold blood. Hogarth, however, was able to convince Reyes that Kilgrave forced Jones to break his own next due to the guilt he had felt about the many crimes he had committed. Additionally, she reminded that several police officers opened fire on Jones without jurisdiction. Reyes relented and Hogarth won the case to protect Jones.[17]
Hiring Foggy Nelson[]
- "My firm is going to need a very resourceful attorney, someone like you, who's not afraid to take on riskier, non-traditional cases."
"Cases involving vigilantes?"
"Let's call them people with complexities." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Foggy Nelson[src]
Marci Stahl recommended Hogarth Foggy Nelson as a valuable attorney to recruit when his firm, Nelson and Murdock, collapsed after losing the highly publicized Frank Castle's trial. Hogarth approached Nelson, offering him a position in the Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz, stating that his "out-of-the-box" thinking would be a great asset for the firm, believing that the New York City will see more cases involving "vigilantes" and will need people as bold as Nelson to pursue those cases. Nelson gladly accepted the job once Hogarth showed him his fee.[18]
Danny Rand's Return[]
Unexpected Meeting[]
- "We need to dig up every shred of physical evidence we can find to prove your identity."
"Was I wrong? To turn down $100 million?"
"It may have been the smartest thing you did, other than coming to me. You are worth billions, Danny. Not millions." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Danny Rand[src]
Outside Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz Office, Hogarth was leaving her firm when a man approached her. Hogarth turned around and threatened to spray the man with pepper spray. The man tried to convince Hogarth that he was Danny Rand, her childhood friend who had apparently died fifteen years earlier. Rand called her by a nickname that he gave her, J-Money and he continued to go into more details about their past while at Rand Enterprises. Slowly convinced, Hogarth asked Rand a few personal questions. When Rand managed to answer all of them correctly, Hogarth was convinced, much to her surprise and joy.
Once they went to the park, Hogarth explained that she had been handling their estate ever since the accident and took care of the Rand Memorial. Rand thanked Hogarth for her help, noted she was grateful for Wendell Rand for giving her first job. Hogarth then noted she had a complicated relationship with Ward Meachum and told Rand that they needed to find evidence in order to prove his identity. When Rand asked how much it will cost for Hogarth's service, she replied that he didn't need to pay her service. Hogarth offered Rand a suite to stay in and some money to buy new clothes before leaving.[2]
Proving Rand's Identity[]
- "We are still insisting on the full rights guaranteed as the sole heir of Rand, which includes a controlling fifty-one percent board seat and compensation, but we are now also adding a corner office, support staff, and housing allowance in the amount of one million per year."
"Your sense of humor has always been your best attribute." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Ward Meachum[src]
Next morning, Hogarth met up with Danny Rand, and she informed Rand that his case turned out to be a challenge since there was no evidence about him. Hogarth suspected Joy and Ward Meachum to be behind it. She warned that if they have no definitive proof, they will lose their case. When kids passed by riding skateboards, Rand remembered a time where he was injured using a skateboard and informed Hogarth that there should be medical records and left to retrieve them.
Hogarth and Rand met with the Meachums and the Board of Rand Enterprises. The pair managed to prove their case by showing a clay bowl that Rand once made with a fingerprint in the clay that was the exact same match as Rand's. Now with undeniable proof about Rand's identity, there was nothing else to discuss. Ward, however, threatened to bury them with motions, delays, discoveries, and depositions in order to delay Rand for ten years. Hogarth replied that they will see them in court. As Rand and Hogarth headed for the elevator, he thanked Hogarth for her help and excused himself.[2]
After Rand took his rightful place in the company, Hogarth was present at the press conference announcing Rand's return, and later Hogarth was Rand's first appointment of the day. She walked him into his new office which had previously belong to his father. Rand looked around the office and remembered the time he used to be there. He even found the stickers that he put under his father's old desk.
Hogarth gave Rand several documents to sign, and as Rand signed the papers, he asked what his job in the company was. Hogarth explained that while he didn't have an actual position, Rand had the strongest voice on the board due to his 51% share of the company. She further clarified that Rand had access to many places in the building due to his status. Before leaving, Hogarth advised Rand to ease into things and that he had an extraordinary opportunity that shouldn't be wasted.[19]
Help for Framed Rand[]
- "Heard anything else?"
"Yeah, I just I just got off the phone with the Agent in Charge of the New York DEA. In light of the fact that you were set up and are going to be making a very generous contribution to the DEA's Widows' and Children's Fund, they are dropping all the charges, including the assault against their officers. Congratulations."
"Now what?"
"Don't know. Up to you. You are a free man." - ―Danny Rand and Jeri Hogarth[src]
Hogarth was called in to prove Danny Rand's innocence. Rand made a poor decision when he decided to attack DEA agents. His life was in danger and Hogarth hadn't had any contact with him. Harold Meachum interrupted just as Hogarth question who would want to set Rand up. All this time, Hogarth had been under the impression that Meachum was dead.
Hogarth was approached by Claire Temple, who claimed that a client needed her help. She passed Hogarth a five dollar bill. On it, the name "J-Money" was written. Hogarth was then taken into an alley, where Rand and Colleen Wing awaited her. His best bet was to stay hidden. If he were to surrender, he'd end up in a jail cell for Six to twelve months at least. The DEA considered both Rand and Wing dangerous and would not hesitate to shoot. Rand claimed that the document Hogarth got from the case had been altered, most likely by Meachum. Rand then explained that Meachum didn't fake his own death. Hogarth was skeptical. Regarding the digital documents, Hogarth was sure there was a copy somewhere and was noted that the group just needed to find them.
Hogarth spoke to the agent in charge of the New York DEA, and in light of the fact that Rand was set up and was going to make a generous contribution to the DEA's Widow's and Children's Fund, they decided to drop all charges.[20]
Caring for Jones[]
- "Now you and I never had this conversation, but the second she gets herself into trouble, priority one is keeping that trouble very far away from us."
"Okay. So... Sorry, just to be clear this is all just in case? She's not in trouble now?"
"I wish. With Jessica, it's just a matter of time." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Foggy Nelson[src]
Having heard that she had found explosives in John Raymond's apartment, Hogarth approached Jessica Jones while the latter was searching after a mysterious corporation. Hogarth warned her to stop her investigation since the FBI and Homeland Security were involved in this case, expressing her fears that Jones might get hurt in the chase after Raymond. Jones asked her if she really cared for her or maybe for herself. Hogarth tried again to make her quit the case by telling her she had saved lives by revealing the explosives, but it did not help and Jones ignored her and left.
To ensure Jones would be out of trouble, Hogarth spoke with Foggy Nelson and told him to make sure Jones' problems would be away from Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz. Eventually, Jones was arrested by Detective Misty Knight, so as requested, Nelson had his former partner, Matt Murdock, to serve as her lawyer.[21]
Life Changes[]
Diagnosed with ALS[]
Hogarth gave a speech at a celebration for women lawyers. Afterwards, she sat down with Steven Benowitz and Linda Chao, who informed Hogarth that Pam had settled. However, they were still mad at the scandal. Two days later, Hogarth got a new client: Pryce Cheng, who had a run in with Jessica Jones. Cheng wanted to hire her to sue Jones. Hogarth had him take a seat and talk about what happened. Hogarth then met with her doctor to discuss recent pain she had been having. She sat down and her doctor told her she had ALS.[22]
Coping with the News[]
A few days later, Hogarth was stuck at a stop sign overthinking her life when Pryce Cheng called. She ignored it and stayed blank face. The cars behind her started honking which woke her from the trance. She pulled over to let them passed. She then saw a woman on the side of the road. The woman got in her car and they picked up more women before driving back to Hogarth's place.
At her apartment, they snorted cocaine. Hogarth danced in front of them before proceeding to strip. One of the women came over to her with a one dollar bill then kissed her. Hogarth asked her if she believed in karma, but the woman said no. Hogarth asked for another sniff of the drug before proceeding. She repeated that she did not want to think. The other two women crowded around Hogarth as they made out. Cheng later knocked on her door and saw what she was doing. He talked to her about not losing her mind before leaving. Hogarth quickly paid the women and told them to leave. She then picked up a wine bottle only to spill it. She sat down crying.[23]
Betrayed by Chao and Benowitz[]
- "I have ALS. It's a progressive neuro-degenerative disease."
"I know."
"It gives my partners cause to invoke a medical disclosure clause. I'm not even showing symptoms. A cramp here or there. It's more annoying than anything. It could take eight years to kill me. Or two. No one knows." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Jessica Jones[src]
Hogarth was approached by her business partners, Steven Benowitz and Linda Chao after they discovered she had been diagnosed with ALS. They suspected this would affect her job performance, though she insisted she was fine. Still, they wanted her out and had put together a buy-out package. Benowitz was far more sympathetic than Chao, but they had fiduciary duties to protect the firm. They gave her a standard window in which she'd be able to negotiate the terms of her severance. However, Hogarth refused to leave, which would mean that Benowitz and Chao would have to force her out.
Hogarth received Benowitz and Chao's buy-out proposal. It was hand delivered by Foggy Nelson, who wanted to help Hogarth fight this. However, she didn't want his help, even going as far as to say they are not friends. Hogarth angrily told him off despite him wanting to help her.[24]
Hogarth v. Chao & Benowitz[]
- "I need your help."
"With?"
"Finding leverage against my partners to prevent them pushing me out of the firm." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Jessica Jones[src]
Hogarth went to the Alias Investigations Office, where she handed Jessica Jones a legal complaint, the first step in filing a lawsuit. Pryce Cheng was suing Jones, and Hogarth was representing him. She was hoping it would bring Jones back into the fold. That was before she decided to try a different approach. Hogarth needed Jones' help with finding leverage against her partners to prevent them from pushing her out of Hogarth, Chao & Benowitz. Hogarth revealed to Jones that she had ALS. It gave her partners cause to invoke a clause. Hogarth wasn't even showing symptoms and it could take anywhere up to eight years to kill her, or two, but no one really knew for sure. Hogarth had considered the buy-out, but she decided against it. She was alone. All she had was her clients, firm, and respect from her colleagues. Hearing Hogarth's plea, Jones agreed to the case.[24]
Looking for Cures[]
Pryce Cheng angrily walked into Hogarth's office after finding out she dropped the lawsuit. After an argument, he told her that he signed with a new firm, Nick Spanos. Hogarth called Jessica Jones asking if she found any information. Jones talked about many money spending issues the two had. Hogarth said they were for clients so it did not matter.
She later had a meeting with her doctor where she asked about quick and painless cures from other countries, despite them being illegal. Her doctor talked about possible repercussions, but Hogarth explained the story of her father and did not want to go out like him, even going as far as to say his two years were a gift compared to her eight. She then walked out when she thought her doctor would not help her. Later, she found herself on a website to buy medicine overseas. After seeing the price of ₽2900 for 50 ml of pentobarbital sodium, Hogarth hesitated, but eventually bought it.[5]
Housing Inez Green[]
Jessica Jones went to prison for the murder of Nick Spanos. Hogarth stayed by her side, arguing that she was innocent. However, the medicine made Hogarth want to puke. She helped get Jones released and encountered Pryce Cheng on the way out, who was angry that Jones got to walk away. Later, she heard a knock at the door. When she opened it up, she found Malcolm Ducasse dropping off Inez Green to her. Hogarth was tasked with housing her. She sat down with Green and talked.[25]
Green asked for clothes in exchange for information on IGH. Despite meeting her demands, Hogarth got little to no information. Green took the clothes and stripped in front of Hogarth, putting them on. Hogarth later called Jones telling her that she needed Green out of there as she was a waste of her time. When Hogarth was in bed, Green walked in causing Hogarth to ask for her manners. Green poured out a bag full of Hogarth's medicine, admitting to trying to steal them. Hogarth immediately kicked Green out, but Green told her about a man in prison named Shane Ryback who has the ability to heal people. She claimed he could heal Hogarth.[26]
Meeting Shane Ryback[]
Hogarth talked to Inez Green about Shane Ryback more before she saw the scars on Green's legs. Hogarth became infatuated with them. They talked more before Hogarth leaned down towards Green's legs, kissing them. Later, she met with Ryback in prison, claiming to be the best lawyer he could afford. He soon took her hand and breathed in. He then let out a gasp before becoming scared and calling for a guard. Hogarth was left alone, believing a healed a part of her.[3]
Being Healed[]
Hogarth continued to have a love life with Green. She asked what the Japanese character tattoo on Green's back meant. She told her it meant "good luck." Later, she was getting dressed when Green asked why she had many clothes if she only wore black. Hogarth talked about the time she wore yellow to a funeral which Green got a kick out of.
Hogarth returned to prison and was able to get Shane Ryback out. When she met Ryback outside, he had no intention of going with her. However, she told him that she knew about his two assaults that he was not charged for. She will bring them to light if he did not go with her. She returned home and got dressed in a purple robe. She laid down on a table while Ryback laid his arms over her. He held her hands as he healed her. Hogarth broke down in tears as she was finally healed from ALS.[4]
Scammed[]
Hogarth was visited at her home by Jessica Jones, who requested that she delay the transfer of her mother. Jones claimed that her mother would confess and hand over Karl Malus. Hogarth then introduced Jones to Shane Ryback. Ryback was supposedly another beneficiary of Malus' work. he allegedly had the power to heal, as he healed Inez Green. Jones questioned how long he was at the clinic. Ryback wasn't sure as that was over ten years ago and he was unconscious half the time. He claimed they did a lot of tests on him, making him put his hands on people who were sick. Hogarth wanted Jones to meet Ryback before she made any decisions about Malus. What he did was both unethical and miraculous. With the proper funding and support, Malus could benefit the world. Hogarth believed that Ryback healed her. He gave her a second chance, and she wanted others to get that same chance. Regardless of what Hogarth had told Jones, she refused to let Malus go.
As planned, Hogarth got Alisa to sign the papers, to which Jones thanked her for all her assistance. Hogarth looked death in the face and it changed her. Her motivations for helping Jones were genuine. Jones then revealed to Hogarth that Ryback didn't heal her as he was a fraud. He was never at IGH and they never made a healer. Green lied as well about being healed. She used what she knew from working at IGH, and they made the whole thing up. Hogarth claimed that she felt something when Ryback touched her, but Jones believed it was all in her head. Hogarth persisted that she was cured. However, ALS couldn't be tested for, which Green was aware of. Jones wanted to handle them for Hogarth, but she declined Jones' help and she refused to call the police.
Hogarth returned home to find that her apartment had been ransacked and that Green and Ryback were gone. It seemed as if Jones was right, and they were scammers. She whimpered as she walked through her home to see it in such disarray. Hogarth then fell to the floor and cried.[27]
Hiring Turk Barrett[]
- "If it's untraceable, my hands are immaculate."
"Scrubbing 'em clean is what I do."
"You want to trade again or you want cash?"
"Trade. Have a feeling you might be right. I'm gonna be needing you again someday." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Turk Barrett[src]
After getting Shane Ryback's address from Frankie, the owner of the pawnshop that Ryback sold some of Hogarth's belongings to, Hogarth called Turk Barrett, an old associate of hers. Barrett was a weapons dealer, and Hogarth needed a gun that was untraceable. Rather than accepting cash, Barrett decided to trade the gun to Hogarth for a future favor as he may be in need of her representation in the future.[28]
Inez vs. Ryback[]
- "He's a con artist. You were homeless, while he was using women to build his nest egg."
"No. It's not like that. He needs me."
"He needs someone damaged and desperate enough to manipulate. After all the shit you've been through at IGH and on the street... He used it to whore you out to me." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Inez Green[src]
That night, Hogarth sat outside Shane Ryback's apartment. She confronted Inez Green as she turned the corner. Hogarth just wanted to talk. She just wanted to know why. Green never meant for it to go that far. It started as just a way to get him out. The healer shtick was Ryback's idea. Green did it in the name of love. Hogarth scoffed, remarking that Ryback had fooled the both of them. However, Green claimed what they had was real, as were her feelings for Hogarth. However, she didn't want to hear it as Green broke her trust. Hogarth wondered why Green went to bed with her. Green explained that it wasn't part of the plan. She was surprised that someone like Hogarth would be interested in her. Hogarth didn't believe that Ryback deserved Green as he had been unfaithful. Hogarth had a friend in the department of corrections who gave her copies of the letters that Ryback wrote from prison. Someone was sending him gifts in exchange for flattery, promises. He had thousands of dollars stashed somewhere. Hogarth explained that Ryback was nothing more than a con artist who used women. Hogarth was certain that one day soon, Ryback would skip out on Green. Just like that, Hogarth had gotten Green to flip on Ryback. Before sending her in, she gave Green a gun.
Hogarth watched from her car as Green confronted Ryback, which led to a huge argument. It wasn't long before the fight escalated, resulting in Green shooting Ryback. Hogarth then called 911 and reported the shooting.[28]
Establishing A New Firm[]
- "I will leave today along with all my clients, including Rand."
"That's half our billable hours!"
"Sixty-two percent, actually. You'll bounce back someday." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Steven Benowitz[src]
Hogarth received a surprise visit from Malcolm Ducasse who just returned from a meeting he had with Linda Chao, which he secretly recorded. He wanted to share his discovery in hopes of stealing Jessica Jones' case as Ducasse had since gone freelance.
Following her meeting with Ducasse, Hogarth summoned Chao and Steven Benowitz. She agreed to the buy-out, but only if they paid her more money. When they refused to do so, Hogarth played the video of Chao's meeting with Ducasse. In the meeting with Chao, they discussed Benowitz and his contacts overseas. In short, Ducasse had Chao on camera admitting to laundering drug money. This information provided Hogarth with all the leverage she needed to negotiate her terms. While there wasn't much proof on the video, it was enough to make clients run scared and bring the FBI to their door. Hogarth wanted her severance doubled. Should they comply, she'd keep the tape to herself, as well as leave the company that day, along with all her clients, including Rand Enterprises, which was 62% of their billable hours.
As for Ducasse, while Hogarth didn't wish to hire him due to lack of experience and him being unlicensed, she did compensate him for his services.
As planned, Hogarth started her own firm, Hogarth & Associates. She was working from home until getting a new location. She had a meeting planned with Pryce Cheng. He was accompanied, by his newest associate, Ducasse. Hogarth had a job for them, which came with complete autonomy and a generous retainer. It was a business opportunity that Jones would object to. Discretion was essential.[29]
A Failing Battle[]
Battling ALS[]
Hogarth woke up from her sleep only to fall onto the floor as she attempted to get up out of the bed. She sat on the ground in pain, contemplating whether to call the 911. She ultimately chose not to, instead grabbing some pills from her nightstand, but only to look at them. She then called Jessica Jones and asked her to come over.
When Jones arrived at Hogarth's apartment, Hogarth shared with Jones her plan for the future. In her hand, she held the pill bottle from her nightstand. Hogarth explained that everyday, she asked herself if she would finally take them. The answer had been no, until that morning, when she felt the first significant symptoms of the ALS, though the symptoms did pass. However, it made her realize that when the day came for her to finally take them, she wouldn't have it in her to do it herself. So, she was going to need someone to slip her the pills without her knowing, and she wanted that to be Jones. However, Jones was reluctant. They argued until Jones decided to take the pills and pour them into alcohol. Jones proceeded to take the drink and try to get Hogarth to drink them, in an attempt to show Hogarth how scary death was.[8]
Reuniting with Kith Lyonne[]
- "The last time I saw you, I cried so hard my eyes were swollen for three days. And the time before that, your head was between my legs. We need all the wine."
"I'm glad you came."
"Well, I couldn't resist an hour of navel-gazing with the one who got away." - ―Kith Lyonne and Jeri Hogarth[src]
At work, Hogarth looked online and found a concert for the Zoey Lyonne Art School. The school was dedicated to the late daughter of Kith Lyonne. Knowing Kith from school, Hogarth attended the concert. Afterward, Hogarth and Lyonne discussed their past. It had been twenty-five years since they last saw each other. Hogarth pointed out the fact that she gave and supported the benefit concert every year, trying to impress her former lover. Kith then introduced her husband, Peter Lyonne. Peter was very happy to meet Hogarth, whom he considered a very good lawyer, especially in the way she defended superpowered heroes. Before leaving, Hogarth gave Kith her card, hoping to arrange a meeting to catch up.[8]
Hogarth and Kith Lyonne had lunch at Tutto Ilgiorno, a local restaurant. Lyonne explained that last time she saw Hogarth, she cried so hard her eyes were swollen for three days. The time before that, they were romantic. Lyonne inquired about Wendy Ross-Hogarth, who Hogarth left her for. Hogarth admitted that she married her but later cheated. Hogarth then revealed that Wendy died in a tragic accident and questioned if Lyonne was still mad at her, to which Lyonne was undecided on. She told Lyonne that she asked her out because she wanted to see if she was happy. Lyonne wasn't broken and was very happy, having married Peter a year after she and Hogarth broke up.
Hogarth changed the conversation, saying she was sorry that Lyonne lost her daughter to cancer. They then started to reminisce about their past. Hogarth revealed that she still had the tape that Lyonne composed for her all those years ago. As tension rose, Lyonne decided to excuse herself, but not before noting her disbelief that Hogarth still had the tape. Later, Hogarth called Malcolm Ducasse into her office. She was very much aware of Ducasse and Zaya Okonjo’s relationship, though she didn't care, so long as the two of them signed a consent form. As for the assignment she called him in for, it is to stay between the two of them. She needed a workup on Peter. She wanted to know what he was hiding.
Lyonne showed up at Hogarth's apartment after Hogarth sent her a photo of the alleged tape she supposedly kept. Lyonne had said she had something for Hogarth. She pulled up a chair and played for her. Hogarth had never been more in love. She then put the tape in and tried to play it for them, but it didn't work. Lyonne decided to pull out her cello and play for her. Hogarth approached Lyonne and caressed her body. Lyonne stopped herself before it went too far, but only briefly. She then got on top of Hogarth and they started kissing.
Hogarth and Lyonne laid in bed, staring into each other's eyes after having sex. Lyonne looked at Hogarth and saw someone who had everything they ever had wanted, though Hogarth insisted this was not true. As for Peter, Hogarth wondered what Kith would tell him. She said she'd tell him the truth as she and Peter had an open marriage. When Zoey died, they gave each other their own sanity. While marriage was long, they’d never leave each other. Later, Ducasse returned, saying that Peter was having an affair. However, Hogarth now knew that would not work and told him to dig deeper.[6]
Exposing Peter Lyonne[]
- "I betrayed my family. Especially the memory of my beloved daughter. I can't take that back. I would have tried to make it right, but an unethical attorney named Jeryn Hogarth never gave me the chance. She disregarded due process, and she exposed my transgressions, and now I must return the favor."
- ―Peter Lyonne[src]
Hogarth convened with Malcolm Ducasse and he shared what he had dug up on Peter Lyonne. He had to dig deep, looking into his past, private life, and family, even his wife’s yearbook, where he discovered a photo of Hogarth and Kith. Ducasse realized that Hogarth wanted him to destroy Peter so that she could then steal his wife. Hogarth was not pleased, as she gave Ducasse an assignment and he failed to deliver. However, Ducasse did find something that could destroy Peter’s life and send him to jail. However, he would only reveal it if given a promotion. He wanted more than a temp desk in the file room and a new employment contract with some financial incentives. Hogarth reluctantly agreed to Ducasse’s demands. Ducasse then informed her that Peter had been making withdrawals from the scholarship fund that he and Kith set up in their daughter’s memory. He used the cash to buy gifts for his girlfriends. Sometimes pays their rent. Ducasse suggested distributing this information to all of Peter Lyonne’s contacts without it being traced back to them. Hogarth decided against sharing this information, as it would not only destroy his life but Kith's.
Hogarth and Kith went on a date to the Thomas Moreau Concert Hall. Afterward, Hogarth introduced Kith as the best cellists she had ever heard. Kith questioned Hogarth's motives, which she explained were to only make Kith happy because Hogarth was happier than she had been in a long time. Kith told Hogarth not to ruin the best sex she had in years by asking for something more. She and Peter had been through so much together. However, Hogarth believed she deserved more, both in her romantic life and career path, but Kith was fine with how her life was. During the concert, Kith reminded Hogarth on how to cede control. As the symphony came to an end, Hogarth and Kith shared a kiss, before being interrupted by Peter, who was calling Kith's phone. Kith talked to Peter and then told Hogarth she had to leave. That night, Hogarth messaged Ducasse, telling him to release the incriminating info on Peter.[30]
Hogarth comforted Kith following the release of information that Peter was skimming money from the scholarship foundation. Kith blamed herself for not seeing this. Hogarth told her that she would take care of everything as what Peter did was reprehensible and he would go down for it. There was a knock at the door. Kith had invited her son over as she wanted to be the one to tell him what his father had done. However, it was Peter on the other side. He suspected that Hogarth was the reason his life was in turmoil. He blamed her for leaking that information. Peter admitted to doing all those things, but he claimed that he was going to tell Kith. He accused Hogarth of destroying their life so that Kith would come to her, but Kith did not want to hear his excuses. Peter told Hogarth that she couldn't have Kith, to which Hogarth replied that he could not either.
Hogarth called Ducasse to inform him that Peter stopped by her apartment earlier that morning and accused her of orchestrating the destruction of his marriage. He was very upset and he might come by the office, where they could run into each other. Should that happen, Peter would have all the proof he needed. So, Ducasse decided to take some time off.
Zaya Okonjo entered Hogarth's office to show her a video that had recently been posted by Peter, where he accused Hogarth of ruining his life and having powered individuals at her beck and call. As it turned out, Lyonne filmed the video in his bathtub, as he slit his wrist and bled out. His final request was that someone stop Hogarth. And in his last words, he apologized to his wife and son. The police later found his body in his bathtub and they wanted to talk to Hogarth. But, before doing anything, Hogarth called Kith, who did not answer her call. Hogarth called Kith shortly after returning home. Kith did not have much to say, simply telling Hogarth to stay away from her.[31]
Hogarth called an emergency meeting. She claimed that Peter was a troubled man. Unstable, angry, and despairing. He needed to blame someone and he blamed Hogarth. Unfortunately, this would spill onto the entire firm. However, Hogarth assured them that she would handle it. She wanted every client brought back in, no matter what it took. After the meeting, Okonjo informed Hogarth that Rand Enterprises was giving her the runaround. So, she was about to head over to beat down some doors.
Hogarth arrived at Peter's wake only to be immediately confronted by Laurent Lyonne, who told her to leave as his mother did not want to see Hogarth. While Laurent didn't know the specifics, from what he knew, Hogarth seemed awful. She accepted that but insisted that she wasn't the person his dad made her out to be. Regardless, Laurent wanted her gone. When she asked that he at least take the bagels, he slapped her hand, which knocked Hogarth to the ground, causing her to injure her wrist. Hogarth got back on her feet and left, but wanted to make sure Laurent told his mother that she stopped by.[32]
Defending Gregory Sallinger[]
- "Even maniacs deserve due process, don't they? Or does that only apply when I'm representing you?"
"You know, I'm trying to meet you halfway here, Jeri. There's still a way this ends with me respecting you."
"Honestly, you respecting me is not my highest priority right now. So let's just stay out of each other's way, and neither of us will get hurt."
"Well, looks like you finally found someone to put you out of your misery. He just might enjoy it a bit too much." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Jessica Jones[src]
Hogarth decided to take up the high-profile case of Gregory Sallinger, suspected serial killer so that her firm could be in the news a different way. He allegedly had seven victims buried in a train yard tank. Hogarth soon got Sallinger released. She defended her client and declared his innocence. Sallinger then placed all the blame on Jessica Jones, claiming that she stalked and assaulted him. He then revealed that it was not just Jones, but also a second vigilante. Sallinger went onto address the hero complex of those with powers, before pointing Jones out in the crowd.
Hogarth scolded Sallinger for not mentioning a second super beforehand. Sallinger reasoned that they would not have believed him. Hogarth wanted this case in the public eye and Sallinger just made headlines by accusing Jones of terrorizing him and calling her a feminist vindicator. He figured she'd be satisfied. The only time that Hogarth has ever failed is when a client tried to undermine her, she informed Sallinger.
Hogarth returned to her office, where she was confronted by Jones. She accused Hogarth of defending Sallinger to bring attention to her failing firm. Hogarth explained that this is about more than Jones. The firm meant everything to her. Hogarth refused to resign as Sallinger's defense and proposed that she and Jones merely stay out each other's way.
Hogarth and Zaya Okonjo held a meeting with Sallinger. They told him that Jones would find anything damaging in his history, so it would be best for him to disclose it to them first. In their discussion, Sallinger noticed just how much Hogarth admired Jones, which she admitted was true. However, Sallinger thought that Hogarth was overestimating Jones, who didn't know the value of hard work. Not like them. Malcolm Ducasse then interrupted and introduced himself. After learning that Ducasse had trained under Jones, Sallinger questioned his allegiance.
Hogarth escorted Sallinger out and then walked back in to hear Ducasse call Sallinger a killer. Hogarth corrected him, saying alleged killer. She continuedm saying it was not their job to assess guilt or innocence. Hogarth ordered Okonjo to look for more reports on the masked woman. Ducasse volunteered to run background on Sallinger as it's his job to assess and manage risk. Hogarth agreed though Okonjo did not believe he was being objective.[33]
Tracking the Masked Vigilante[]
- "We now have evidence that this unidentified criminal is responsible for a rash of attacks on the people of our city. Gregory Sallinger nearly lost his life at the hands of this monstrous powered creature. In light of the NYPD's failure to act, we have decided to stop this violent offender ourselves. Hogarth & Associates is prepared to offer a $250,000 reward for the successful identification of this vigilante plaguing our streets. I will unmask her. And in doing so, I will lead the charge to take back our city from those who consider themselves above the law."
- ―Jeri Hogarth[src]
Zaya Okonjo informed Hogarth of how their client Reid Pearson, who was doing a six-year stint for date rape, claimed that he was attacked by a masked woman and framed. With Gregory Sallinger revealing a second vigilante, it couldn't be a coincidence. Hogarth ordered Okonjo to go to Rykers and interview Pearson to see if the descriptions match.
Hogarth learned that Okonjo found that police records, which showed that five felons claimed that a masked female vigilante assaulted, tricked or framed them. One of them being Reid Pearson. However, three of the five happened to be their current or former clients. Hogarth suspected that the masked vigilante was targeting them and wanted Okonjo to follow through with the investigation, even though Okonjo thought Malcolm Ducasse was more equipped.[33]
Hogarth called Ducasse into her office, where she and Okonjo played the footage of his encounter with the masked vigilante. However, it seemed as if the footage had been edited and instead of an altercation between Ducasse and the vigilante, followed by the two peacefully parting ways, Ducasse entered his office and walked right back out. They believed this woman to be partnered with Jessica Jones. Hogarth thought she was being targeted by the two, and so she wanted the second vigilante unmasked, no matter the cost.
Hogarth watched from her laptop as the masked vigilante came and saved Jones, confirming her suspicions that they were working together. Okonjo informed Hogarth that she hadn't been able to get a hold of Sallinger all day. They needed a statement. Hogarth got a call from Sid Franken from the Bulletin, who wanted a comment from Sallinger. Hogarth told Franken that Jones was associating with the masked woman who assaulted her client. No one, powered or otherwise, should be above the law. Hence, Hogarth & Associates were making it their business to stop them. Franken then asked for a comment on Peter Lyonne’s suicide, but Hogarth declined. Lastly, she stated that her firm had never and would never support the illegal activity of powered vigilantes. If Jones knew the identity of the masked woman, then Hogarth would be coming from her. Hogarth had officially declared war on supers.[34]
Hogarth held a press conference in regards to the masked vigilante, who she claimed was responsible for a rash of attacks. Sallinger was her latest victim. Hogarth had decided to take matters into her own hands and stop the woman. Hogarth & Associates were prepared to offer a $250,000 reward for the successful identification of the vigilante. After the press conference, Malcolm Ducasse approached Hogarth as he was not sure she was going about it the right way. He believed Sallinger to be the real threat to the city, not the masked vigilante. While Hogarth may be offering a cash reward, Ducasse was still tasked with unmasking the woman. And if she had to pay the reward because Ducasse failed, then there would be a problem.
Hogarth received a surprise visit from Laurent Lyonne. He asked if she was good at her job. Which she was. His mother was about to lose everything. The foundation that his father stole from was angry and the donors filed suit. Hogarth argued that the facts would prove Kith was not involved. She was sure they would settle. All but one, Lyonne replies. Demetri Patseras. He was a family friend before something happened that caused a rift. This occurred when Lyonne was 15, so he didn't know the specifics. What Lyonne did know was that Patras would not back off. Hogarth advised them to get a new lawyer. Lastly, He pleaded with Hogarth to not hurt his mother any more than she already had.
Hogarth offered her assistance in dealing with Patseras. She said that she loved Lyonne and that she never stopped. And when she saw Lyonne again, unhappy and unable to find a way out, Hogarth exposed Peter, claiming she did it for Lyonne's sake. 25 years later, and by Lyonne's account, Hogarth was still a selfish manipulator. She did not want to hear anything else Hogarth had to say, but Hogarth continued nevertheless. Hogarth brought up their previous relationship, saying she found Lyonne too soon as she was not ready for a soul mate. Now she was. In between that time, she followed Lyonne over the years via social media. And when she had her investigator dig into Peter, she thought it was a stroke of luck when she found out he was a fraud and a cheat. And while she regretted her part in his death, she would do it again as she loved Lyonne. To this, Lyonne replied the truth was overrated. As Lyonne was leaving, Hogarth revealed that Laurent came to her and asked for help. Lyonne did not reply. She simply grabbed her bags and left.
Ducasse revealed to Hogarth that the security footage of the masked woman in the file room had been doctored by him. And on a USB, he had the missing footage, in which Hogarth would see Ducasse as he caught her breaking in and then let her go. He then quit as Hogarth simultaneously fired him. They’d been on the same page for some time, building a future together. Hogarth mentioned Zaya Okonjo, possibly suspecting that she had some involvement even after Ducasse assured Hogarth she didn't. She accused Ducasse of not only vilifying her and her life's work but stealing from her and lying. She reminded him of what they've both done and how he's no better than her. Ducasse thought about doing what Hogarth asked of him, for Okonjo's sake. Unmasking the woman vigilante, who for all her flaws, was at least trying to be a hero, while they protected a serial killer. If that's what Hogarth wanted from him, then Ducasse was out. In that, Hogarth realized that Ducasse knew the identity of the vigilante.
While watching the unedited footage of Ducasse's encounter with the masked vigilante, Hogarth was visited by Lyonne, who brought her financials and everything Hogarth needed to know about the foundation. Hogarth would have her accountants go through it and circle back with recommendations. However, Lyonne had no desire to talk about them. Once Lyonne was gone, Hogarth returned to her laptop, where she replayed the surveillance footage. This time, she could see the vigilante's face in the reflection of Ducasse's computer. She zoomed in to discover that Trish Walker was the masked vigilante.[7]
Hogarth called Lyonne over to her firm to share with her that the IRS had agreed to a reduced fine, and other than Patseras, the defrauded foundation donors would accept a minor settlement. Hogarth was willing to give her a loan, in a written agreement Patseras’ refusal to settle felt like a personal vendetta. Lyonne explained that Patseras and his wife gave Lyonne and Peter the seed money for the foundation. They were Peter's clients and their closest friends until Lyonne noticed bruising on Fiona Patseras’ shoulders. Fiona didn't want Patseras to go to jail, but Lyonne got her away from him, and since then, Patseras has blamed her for the breakup of his marriage. Looking to exploit a weakness, Hogarth was looking into his records. As Lyonne left, Hogarth instructed Char to set up a meeting with Walker and to send Berman up, the lawyer covering Dorothy Walker's estate.
Hogarth called Lyonne over to her apartment after speaking to Patseras and his counsel. Hogarth threatened a countersuit; they’d have a chance in court. But they’d be in for a long and ugly fight, which Lyonne wanted to avoid. A case like this required more than Hogarth's aggression. Her forensic accountant believed that Patseras was evading taxes. But she couldn't prove it without access to his records. His taxes were their leverage. Hogarth wanted Lyonne's permission to do what was necessary. She knew a woman that owed her a favor, and she had the abilities that gave her the kind of access they needed. Like she did with Peter's records, Lyonne believed that Hogarth wanted her to condone what she did to Peter, and she wouldn't, deciding to leave instead. Hogarth tried to chase after her, but stumbled to the ground in pain.
While taking her daily pills, Hogarth got a call from Lyonne, who informed her that Patseras threatened to put her in jail. He asked the DA to file criminal charges of fraud. Worried that Laurent would be left alone, Lyonne gave Hogarth the permission to do whatever it took to end this.[35]
Helping Kith[]
Following Dorothy Walker's murder, Hogarth planned to remove herself from the Gregory Sallinger case. Hogarth surprised Trish Walker at her apartment, who revealed that she knew Walker was the masked vigilante. Walker had been stealing her files and assaulting her clients. On top of that, Walker was looking at a long list of felonies for also assaulting a couple of officers and maiming Sallinger. Walker raised her leg and held Hogarth against a steel beam as she too was particularly responsible for Sallinger killing her mother. Hogarth claimed she would destroy the footage in exchange for a favor that would require Walker's gifts. She needed Walker to steal something from a man named Demetri Patseras. He was trying to hurt someone Hogarth cared about, and he was a bad person. Hogarth arranged to have the specifics sent to Walker after the funeral.[36]
Hogarth entered her firm to find Jessica Jones and Sallinger in her office. They had been there since 2:00 AM. Jones told Hogarth that Sallinger was now her problem and that she needed to find him protection, possibly a safe house. However, Hogarth & Associates didn't provide protection. Sallinger would much rather have Jones as his protection anyways. To protect Walker, Jones would have to protect him. As Sallinger exited, Hogarth revealed that she knew Walker was the vigilante and that Walker may have threatened her after Hogarth admittedly pressured Walker into doing something for her. Hogarth asked if she should be worried, to which Jones replied that Hogarth did not fit her profile.
Hogarth arrived at the New York State Supreme Court Building. She awaited Sallinger's arrival, questioning what was taking so long. The officer informed her that the equipment was old. When the elevator with Sallinger on it arrived, Hogarth screamed in horror as Sallinger had been killed and his blood painted the walls.[37] After Sallinger's death, Hogarth stopped Jones outside the courthouse as she wanted her to tell Walker that she would not reveal her identity and that she was nothing like Sallinger.[38]
Deal with Walker[]
Hogarth watched the news report of Sallinger's murder. The call for the identification and arrest of the masked vigilante continued to grow as she was now suspected of killing at least three men she deemed as criminal. Hogarth got a surprise visit from Kith Lyonne, who stopped by to check on her after hearing about the attack at the courthouse. Hogarth was shaking and could barely stand upright, but that was because she was dying of ALS. And she found Lyonne again because she was going to die. It was progressing slowly, but her hands were no longer hers anymore. And eventually, her entire body would become her prison. Hogarth admitted that it was selfish of her to seek Lyonne out and she was sorry for it. Hogarth then got a call from Walker, who wanted her secret to remaining as such. As for the favor, Hogarth no longer wanted Walker involved. Walker was already invested and wanted to know just how bad of a person Demetri Patseras was. Hogarth just wanted proof of tax evasion. But Walker wondered if he had done worse. She asked again how bad he was. Hogarth answered that he was a monster.
As Patseras' attack made the news, Jones barged into Hogarth's office and accused her of hiring Walker to kill Patseras. Hogarth replied that it was better Patseras than her. Hogarth's clients were exactly the type of people Walker was after, thus making Hogarth her supplier. Jones needed Hogarth's help to bring Walker in by using her as bait Hogarth would hold a press conference, where she would plan to reveal the masked vigilante's identity.
While in her apartment, waiting for Walker to undoubtedly arrive, Hogarth received a surprise visit from Lyonne, who questioned if Hogarth sent the masked vigilante after Patseras, who laid up in the hospital in critical condition. His lawyer called and said that Patseras was dropping the lawsuit. Normally, Lyonne would be angry, but instead she felt free, as it was over. Hogarth and Lyonne shared a kiss before being interrupted by Walker. Jones came from out of the room and slammed Walker against the ceiling. As Hogarth called the police, Walker raced over to Lyonne and held her hostage. Hogarth pleaded with Walker to stop. She then pulled out a gun and demanded that Walker let her go. She even offered to find her a way out of town in exchange for Lyonne's release. When Jones attempted to rush Hogarth, she shot Jones in the leg. With Jones down on the ground, Walker and Hogarth exited the apartment.
Walker took Hogarth to her hideout, where Hogarth made arrangements for Walker to get out of the country. Hogarth would take Walker across the border to Canada. From there, she'd be on her own. Hogarth remarked that Walker's powers were impressive. However, it didn't matter how powerful Walker was. She'd never forget what it felt like to be helpless. Hogarth knew the feeling. Walker claimed that she didn't want to kill anyone. She also pointed out her Hogarth gave her life for Lyonne, which was unexpected to her. Hogarth explained that she loved Lyonne and wanted more for her than for herself. Jones felt the same way about Walker, Hogarth believed. She merely wanted her sister back. Walker wanted her back to, but she wouldn't have been able to make the ultimate sacrifice. Walker then got an alert on her phone from the New York Bulletin. It was Jones, who had revealed her identity to the world.
The next day, Hogarth and Walker arranged a meeting with Alex Sokolov, who could get Walker out of the country. However, Hogarth had never done business with this man before. Even in a brown wig, he instantly recognized Walker. He was a government contractor who supplied armed forces. It gave him flexibility with certain restrictions. He and Walker would layover in Thailand. From there, Walker could go wherever she wanted. He told her that she could remove the wig as his guys were to be trusted. They entered a warehouse, where they discovered that Sokolov shipped coffins to war zones. Walker was being shipped in a coffin and had a 17-hour flight ahead of her, but they had something to put her out. However, she declined any drugs. Walker got into the coffin as they were about to depart. Once Walker was locked inside, Hogarth called Jones, but by then, Jones had already arrived.[38]
The Last Mistake[]
- "I need you. I need you."
"I know, you don't want to die alone. But you're going to."
"Kith. You're the last mistake I will ever make." - ―Jeri Hogarth and Kith Lyonne[src]
Hogarth greeted Lyonne with a hug as she arrived at the apartment. Lyonne wanted to thank Hogarth for everything she had done, but said she also came to say goodbye. While Lyonne believed that Hogarth loved her, Hogarth only did what she did because they were both in a dangerous situation that she created. Lyonne was leaving that and Hogarth behind her. As Lyonne was leaving, Hogarth remarked she was the last mistake she would ever make.[38]
Personality[]
This section needs a rewrite |
Cold, ruthless, and seemingly amoral, Hogarth excels at manipulation. At the same time, however, Hogarth seems to know her own limits, prioritizing "winning" over idealism, in sharp contrast with the lawyers of Nelson and Murdock, for example. As such, she is susceptible to manipulation, as when she accepts Kilgrave's offer of an easy triumph over the issues in her divorce with Wendy Ross-Hogarth, on whom she cheated with her younger secretary, Pam.
Hogarth's only loyalty is to herself and her own success; even after Pam saves Hogarth from Ross-Hogarth's attempt at murder, while under the control of Kilgrave, Hogarth disavows all responsibility for the violence at Ross-Hogarth's house, betraying Pam even as Hogarth attempts to act as her attorney.
Abilities[]
- "I am the best lawyer you can't afford. I win. That's what I do."
- ―Jeri Hogarth to Shane Ryback[src]
- Master Lawyer: Hogarth established her law firm and specializes in criminal law, never losing a case. She has the ability to analyze how a jury will think and manipulate circumstances to her favor, exemplified by when she used Trish Walker to change public opinion on the possible existence of mind controllers. When focused, Hogarth can negotiate to make other litigators settle out of court, thus continuing her reputed winning streak. However, since that is not her specialty, she allowed Desmond Tobey to handle her divorce proceedings. Nevertheless, Hogarth continued to work cases to her own benefit, including lessening Shane Ryback's sentencing and allowing him freedom from prison.
- Marksman: When Jessica Jones made a move to intercept Trish Walker, Hogarth turned around and shot Jones in the leg with surprising speed and accuracy, preventing the vigilante from following her and Walker. Also, when Walker was using Kith Lyonne as a human shield, Hogarth seemed confident that she could kill Walker in one shot without harming the hostage.
Equipment[]
Weapons[]
- Glock 19: Hogarth obtained Oscar Clemons' handgun when she escaped from the Decommissioned CDC Facility as Kilgrave killed his mother and broke free of his cell. She threatened to shoot Kilgrave in the street, but Kilgrave simply commanded her to throw the gun away and let him board her car.
- Smith & Wesson Model 60: Hogarth bought this revolver from Turk Barrett in order to enact her revenge against Shane Ryback and Inez Green. Hogarth gave the gun to Green, and told her lies about how Ryback had also conned her by flattering other women. Moments later, Green killed Ryback with the gun, and Hogarth anonymously reported the crime to the police. Hogarth owned another revolver and took it when Trish Walker took Kith Lyonne as a hostage while negotiating with her. She ended up shooting Jessica Jones in the leg to prevent her from following them, in order to make Walker set Lyonne free.
