"This photograph is to be your apology for casting others in shadow while you soaked up sunlight you don't deserve. Is that your sorry face?"
Gregory Sallinger to Erik Gelden

AKA Sorry Face is the sixth episode of the third season of the television series Jessica Jones.

Synopsis[]

As the police sift through the gruesome crime scene, Jessica and Trish race to find Sallinger's latest captive.

Plot[]

Jessica Jones observes from afar as NYPD examines the scene. She gives Eddy Costa Gregory Sallinger's address. Costa questions how Jones came into contact with Sallinger. Jones claims it is through a separate case, though Costa needs more in order to build a case. He wouldn't even be able to search Sallinger's place until a warrant is acquired. Jones convenes with Trish Walker, who wants to break into Sallinger's apartment before the cops get a warrant. Walker then gets a message from her mother, informing her of a production meeting.

Erik Gelden awakens in what appears to be the kitchen of a restaurant, mouth duct taped and hands tied. Sallinger rips off the duct tape and explains that he usually does this in a private home setting, which Gelden doesn't have. Sallinger reveals to Gelden that he is mad that Gelden is crippled by good looks and charm, which affords him pride. And he teams with Jones, who has not earned her powers, to make matters worse. Because she cheated, they do Sallinger harm, which he claims is unfair. Sallinger sets a camera up in front of Erik and began taking photos. The entire time Gelden is sitting in the chair, Sallinger is unaware that Gelden is breaking free of his restraints.

Just as Malcolm Ducasse is about to look into the criminal arrest record of Berry, he gets a call from Zaya Okonjo. She asks where he is, which is shortly after Jeri Hogarth called an emergency meeting. Okonjo wonders if Ducasse is bailing, but he insists that's not what he is doing. During the emergency meeting, Hogarth claims that Peter Lyonne is a troubled man. He needs to blame someone and he blamed Hogarth. Unfortunately, this would spill onto the entire firm. However, Hogarth assures them that she will handle it. She wants every client brought back in, no matter what it took.

Ducasse confronts Jones as she gets off the elevator. He tells her that Brianna called Gor, who sucker punched him. Jones informs Ducasse how she has discovered the body parts of Sallinger's kills and where he might be able to find Berry. Jones then calls Gelden, but Sallinger answers. He wants to know from Jones how they found him. Jones offers to come and explain every mistake Sallinger made if he gives up his location. However, he does no such thing.

Jones rushes over to Sallinger's apartment, where police are all over the scene. So, Jones circles around back. However, Costa catches her before she could climb up the fire escape. He asks Jones about the photos behind the bureau. It is full of landscape photos, meaning Sallinger has cleaned it out. Initially, it has photos of his eight victims. Costa corrects Jones and tells her there are only seven victims according to the coroner. And they’d identified them all. Jones offers to trade Costa the copies of the photos from the album for the list of victim's names. If she knew which photo isn't on the list, she could find the eighth victim. As there is another officer present, Costa says no to the trade, but as he is walking off, he intentionally drops the list for Jones. Jones reconvenes with Walker and together they discuss how to find Erik. When she calls his phone, Jones recalls him yelling out that he is in a commercial something, before Sallinger cuts him off. Whatever it is, it would have to be abandoned for Sallinger to do his work.

Ducasse follows Jones’ lead and finds Berry. However, before taking her back to the apartment, Ducasse attacks Gor. After him out, Ducasse informs Berry that Sallinger took her brother and that she could be next. Hogarth arrives at Peter's wake only to be immediately confronted by Laurent Lyonne, who tells her to leave as his mother doesn't want to see Hogarth. She accepts that but insists that she isn't the person his dad made her out to be. When she asks that he at least take the bagels, he slaps her hand, which knocks Hogarth to the ground, causing her to injure her wrist. Hogarth gets back on her feet and leaves, but wants to make sure Laurent tells his mother that she stopped by.

Jones finds the eighth man. It is the only photo not listed on the list of victims. Now, they just need a name. They enter the apartment building to find Dorothy awaiting their arrival. She had covered for Walker at her production meeting and wanted to know why. Walker informs her mother that it is complicated and private, but Jones suggests they tell her. When Walker doesn't, Jones reveals that she has powers. However, Walker denies there is any truth to this and Dorothy doesn't believe a word Jones is saying. So, Jones opens her window and throws Walker out of it. Dorothy rushes over in a panic only to see that Jones is telling the truth and that Walker is perfectly fine, as she landed on her feet.

Jones then breaks into Ducasse's apartment. She is shocked to see that he is home. He informs her that he found Berry and she is on her way. Jones then tells Ducasse the reason she broke into his apartment is that she needs an ID on their eighth victim. She assumes that he has facial recognition software considering his current employer.

Once the Walkers make it back into the apartment, Dorothy questions why she has kept this hidden. Trish says that Dorothy had always resented the powered Jones, but Dorothy claims that is never her problem with Jones. Walker reminded her mother how she never has a choice in anything while growing up. A child without a childhood as she is the victim of her mother's mood swings and overbearing ways. Now, Walker could protect other people from that and a lot of other bad things. Dorothy admitted that she always worried that she'd done too much damage. She then left, both her and Trish crying.

While waiting for a match on the photo, Jones looks over to Ducasse and points out that something is wrong with him. She reveals that Erik gets a read off him when they dropped off his sister. Jones wonders what happened to Ducasse, which he replied that he grew up. They get a hit. A 96% match on Caspar Marx, Jones heads out.

Still restrained to a chair, Gelden admits to Sallinger that he took advantage of people, though Sallinger doesn't believe he regretted that. Erik continued to talk in order to distract Sallinger while he broke free. Sallinger says that the photograph is to be Erik's apology. Gelden is visibly in pain. Sallinger notes that pain helped him focus and reveals that his brother also wanted to be a photographer, and his father thought Donny is a genius. But, he then tells Erik that he is about to die. Sallinger takes another photo, but he is displeased. As he approaches Gelden, he notices that he becomes more agitated. And when he grabs him, Gelden's nose bled. From there, Sallinger discovers that Gelden is powered. Sallinger demands to know what the power is, Gelden reveals to Sallinger that he can feel his darkness.

Walker and Jones meet up. As Walker doesn't have her disguise, she stays behind as Jones headed inside the restaurant that Marx owned. As it turns out, Caspar Marx is alive and well, working at his restaurant. Jones asks him questions, Marx reveals that Sallinger is a regular. One time, they were on a date and he wanted to photograph Marx. He came by the restaurant after hours and brought a portable photo lab. If the photo is consensual, then why is Marx making such a distraught face in the photo, Jones asked. He explains that even when Sallinger had him in a chokehold, he thought they were skipping right to the action. Then he woke up in the kitchen, taped to a chair. For Marx, it was sexy at first. But then Sallinger snapped. Jones asked if Sallinger ever came back after that. Marx informed her that the restaurant in which this occurred has since been closed. She realizes this must be the commercial kitchen that Erik is trying to tell her about and asks for the address.

Sallinger makes Gelden cry blood and wonders if that happens a lot. It happens because Sallinger lacks empathy and is evil. Sallinger thinks evil is the wrong word. He is asserts fairness in an unfair world. He is vengeful without pity, appropriately cruel. Sallinger believes that their powers make them cheaters. He has the only power that is not a fraud. As Sallinger gets close, Gelden breaks free of the tape restraining him and punches Sallinger in the face. He tries to run away, but is far too weak. Jones and Walker arrive just in time to save Gelden. After kicking Sallinger over the counter, Jones tends to Gelden. Sallinger circles around and charges at Jones with a knife who knocks him back. Then Walker disarm him and the two of them knock him out. Walker takes Erik back to Alias while Jones stays behind to make sure the police get Sallinger.

At the station, Costa informs Jones that it's not going to stick. The bodies are clean; no DNA, fingerprints, or physical evidence at his apartment. Sallinger is claiming that Jones harassed him and that he hid in the restaurant to get away from her. Costa wants to know what went down in the kitchen because it is obvious she and Sallinger weren't the only two people on scene. While Costa and Jones are certain they have the right guy, the jury will only see a stand-up guy who volunteered for the community center, with no priors. On the other hand, Jones is a super with a record. The DA took a look at the case and passed. So, unless there is another witness, they’d have to let Sallinger go. They could only hold him for the night.

After successfully rounding up more of their clients, Hogarth has an important matter, with Steven Benowitz’ arrival. He comes to deliver some client transfer papers personally. They’re poaching two-thirds of Hogarth’s business. The board made the decision yesterday. He recalls Hogarth looking at him and telling him to come out. He initially hated her for it, but she was right. Now, he looks to her and tells her to slow down and enjoy her life. Hogarth replied this is her life and that Benowitz isn’t welcome in it.

Gelden wakes up in Jones’ bed to the sight of Walker at his bedside. He asks where Sallinger is, and Walker replies in jail. Gelden says that Jones saved his life. As does Walker, he recognizes her voice. She's saves him twice now. He promises Walker that he will keep her secret and thanks her. Berry then comes racing into the room grateful that he is alive. Ducasse follows her in, exchanged looks with Walker and then leaves.

Hogarth sits at her desk, looking at the old photo of her and Kith, before being interrupted by Jones, who is seeking help. Jones explains that she found a serial killer. He is the one responsible for the bodies in the train yard. The problem is that the cops can't pin him. But Jones has someone who could get him locked up for kidnapping, but that's only if her client, who is initially blackmailing the killer, testified, but only if he gets immunity. Hogarth tells Jones that a decent lawyer could probably get her client one year. Which isn't ideal for Jones.

Berry enters Ducasse's room as he is lifting weights. She noticed something is wrong, he says he doesn't know what is wrong with him. He'd done some things and that's not who he wants to be. He wants to be someone who's effective and took care of people. A real man. Berry comes onto him, unzipping his pants, and pleasuring him. At the same time, Ducasse gets a call from Zaya, which he chose to ignore.

Jones returns to inform Gelden and Walker of the bad news, that there isn't any hard evidence, meaning Sallinger will walk. Erik wants to get out of town, but Jones has a plan. They are going to get him on kidnapping. Erik will make a deal in exchange for his testimony. He'd serve a year for his prior infractions. However, Erik would never survive it. Walker argues they’d put him in solitary and he'd probably parole out in a few months, but Gelden refuses. Walker, upset over Gelden's decision, decides to leave. Erik apologizes to Jones who then joins him in the bed as he claims she is like aspirin to him. As he holds Jones close, he tells her that Sallinger is only just getting started. He talked about all of them. The powered, who he referred to as cheaters. He claims he will bring pain to power. Erik worries that they might’ve unleashed him.
