- "I know who you are because I watch the news. 'The Successful Apprehension of Wilson Fisk.'"
- ―Elektra to Matt Murdock[src]
The Arrest of Wilson Fisk was a mass arrest operation, conducted by the FBI and the New York City Police Department to take Wilson Fisk and his associates into custody.
Background[]
- "You have an opportunity here, Detective. By turning evidence on Fisk, you can set things right. If that's what you want. If not, you can sit here playing with yourself until Fisk sends more men to kill you. Decide."
"It won't make a difference. He owns the cops. I'll be dead before I can testify..."
"Not all of them. Turn yourself in to Brett Mahoney, you can trust him. And he knows a couple of lawyers that can't be bought. They can help you." - ―Masked Man and Carl Hoffman[src]
Carl Hoffman carried out Wilson Fisk's order and killed Christian Blake to prevent him from speaking out about his work for Fisk, and seemingly disappeared from New York City. However, he was found by Leland Owlsley who knew that Hoffman had a lot of dirt on Fisk and decided to keep him as a leverage in case his partnership with Fisk comes to an end. Owlsley kept Hoffman at one of his properties and instructed his men to bring Hoffman to the FBI for a testimony if Owlsley does not call in time. Hoffman was afraid to go to Fisk, but Owlsley promised him a hefty compensation and a witness protection program, while knowing that Fisk's men would find him either way.
When Fisk confronted Owlsley on the suspicious transactions of his funds, Owlsley came clean and admitted that he and Madame Gao attempted to poison Vanessa Marianna in hopes of making Fisk focus on the business again. Although Fisk was utterly furious, Owlsley stated that they will be parting ways and he will take a half of Fisk's assets, telling him about Hoffman and what will happen if Fisk tries anything. However, it was not enough to stop him, as Fisk murdered Owlsley in a fit of rage and ordered his men to search up the entire city and kill Hoffman once they find him. Corbin and other New York City Police Department officers on Fisk's payroll conducted the search and managed to track down Hoffman's location.
Meanwhile, Nelson and Murdock continued investigating Fisk's operations using the documents Marci Stahl got from Landman and Zack, as they handled Fisk's legal procedures. They managed to find the suspcious property, so the Masked Man went there, while Corbin and his men attacked Owlsley's men. Before Corbin could finish off Hoffman, the Masked Man rescued him and insturcted him to turn himself in and testify against Fisk. Hoffman thought it would not matter since Fisk bribed half of the police department, but the vigilante said that he can trust Brett Mahoney and that Nelson and Murdock will help him with the testimony.[4]
Arrest[]
- "Wilson Fisk, you're under arrest for racketeering. You have the right to remain silent."
- ―FBI Agent to Wilson Fisk[src]
Carl Hoffman came to 15th Precinct Police Station where he approached Brett Mahoney and informed him that he has a statement he needs to make, asking him to call Nelson and Murdock. Mahoney organized an interview between Hoffman and the FBI, with Nelson and Murdock representing him as his lawyers, as Hoffman agreed to waive all considerations for immunity in exchange for witness protection. Hoffman proceeded to give the FBI all information he had on Wilson Fisk, his illegal operations and his known associates, with all the evidence they needed to round them all up at once.
With Hoffman's testimony, the FBI conducted a series of arrests across New York City, taking Randolph Cherryh, Turk Barrett, M. Caldwell, Parish Landman, Corbin and other Fisk's associates into custody. Eventually, they went after Fisk himself and raided his penthouse, taking Fisk into custody, separating him from Vanessa Marianna whom Fisk told to leave. Fisk was transported in an armored vehicle with two FBI agents guarding him, as the New York City Police Department convoy was driving him to prison.
However, Fisk arranged for a group of mercenaries to attack the convoy and in a resulting firefight, they managed to kill numerous police officers. As they were approaching the armored vehicle, one FBI agent threatened to shoot Fisk unless they stay back, but he was killed by his partner who was paid off by Fisk. The mercenaries then escorted Fisk out of the convoy to their truck, before he ordered everyone to watch out for anyone pursuing them and take them out on sight.[4]
Aftermath[]
- "I deeply regret that it's come to this, Mr. Fisk. I assure you my firm did everything we could, but the case against you was, quite simply, bulletproof."
"How is the progress regarding my appeal, Mr. Donovan?"
"We're making progress, but I have to be honest. Given the magnitude of charges, we were lucky we could plead you out at all." - ―Benjamin Donovan and Wilson Fisk[src]
With the authorities on his trail, Wilson Fisk attempted to escape from New York City with Vanessa Marianna and start a new life elswhere. However, he was confronted by Daredevil, who had acquired a suit from Melvin Potter and was determined to bring Fisk to justice. The two clashed against each other on the streets of Hell's Kitchen and Daredevil managed to defeat Fisk, leaving him to be apprehended by Brett Mahoney.[4] With the evidence stacked against him, Fisk was imprisoned at Ryker's Island, where he awaited trail. Using what remained of his funds, he hired Donovan and Partners to appeal his arrest in court, but due to the magnitude of charges, his situation seemed rather grim.[5]
Fisk's arrest made a resonance across the city, causing the corruption within the New York City Police Department to decline due to a massive scrutiny, although there were still those like Rafael Scarfe continued to work for the criminals, such as the Stokes Crime Family.[6] Other groups like Kitchen Irish attempted to fill in the power vacuum in a criminal underworld left by Fisk's absence but the situation was complicated due to the Punisher's interference.[7] Fisk expressed interest in the new vigilante and arranged for him to be taken to Ryker's Island as well, manipulating him into killing Dutton, as he was the last obstacle between Fisk and a total control over the prison. Once Punisher succeeded in his task and survived Fisk's attempt to kill him, Fisk helped him escaped from the prison, knowing that his war on crime would benefit him in the long run, once he is out.[5]
The FBI tried to approach Fisk, seeking the intel on the criminal underworld of New York, but Fisk refused to give them any information.[8] In reality, he was preparing a plan to manipulate the FBI and get out of Ryker's Island, while also ensuring that Vanessa Marianna would not be prosecuted as his accomplice.[9] He used Ray Nadeem's desperation and gave him the information on Albanian Syndicate, before staging an attempt on his life, making Nadeem believe that if Fisk keeps talking, he would eventually be killed. The incident forced the FBI to convince Blake Tower to transfer Fisk from the prison to a house arrest under the FBI supervision, unaware that Fisk was already working his way out to corrupt the FBI agents and reclaim the criminal underworld.[10]
