Marhwini was the first lord of the people who became known as the Éothéod, later the Rohirrim.
Biography[]
Marhwini was the son of Marhari, who led a remnant of Northmen from Rhovanion to battle alongside Gondor to stop the advance of the Wainriders years earlier. Through Marhari his father, he was also a direct descendant of Vidugavia, 'King of Rhovanion'.
Marhwini's father Marhari first aligned his people with Gondor in a fight with the Wainriders called the Battle of the Plains. In that conflict, King Narmacil II of Gondor was slain, as was Marhari. Marhwini then led a remnant of what remained of the Northmen to the vales of Anduin, where they mixed with fugitives escaped from the east. These people would come to be known as the Éothéod, they were the culture that would become the Rohirrim.
During the reign of King Calimehtar of Gondor, Marhwini sent word to Gondor that a host of Wainriders was preparing to assault the land of Calenardhon (later Rohan). Eager to avenge Gondor's prior defeat by the Wainriders, Calimehtar led an army out of Gondor and joined with Northmen under Marhwini. The combined force overwhelmed the Wainriders' army at the Second Battle of Dagorlad. As Marhwini had hoped, many thralls of the Wainriders who had once been among the Northmen revolted, and caused their captor's settlements to be destroyed. As the Wainriders retreated from battle, they were forced to retreat far to the east, having been defeated and driven from their homes. Thus the Éothéod were for a time victorious although the power of the Wainriders was only checked and not destroyed.
He had a son named Forthwini.[1]
Etymology[]
Marhwini means horse-friend, and is taken from the Gothic language with Marh (mearh in Old English) meaning 'horse' and wini (winë in Old English) meaning 'friend'.[2]
Portrayals in adaptations[]
- In The Lord of the Rings Online, Marhwini appears in a flashback narrating the history of the Éothéod. His son is named Forthwini and grandson Forthári, both of whom die in battle to the Orcs, leaving Forthári's son Frumgar as Marhwini's only heir.
