Is Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life incredibly endearing and poignant? Certainly. Is it overly long and poorly directed? Unfortunately, yes. The biggest strike that Capra’s so-called magnum opus entails is the often sub-par production effort with jarring editing and horrific framing in sequences filmmaking filmmaking 101. The latter an inexcusable element in the majestic golden age of cinema compared to the contemporaries surrounding it. Far too elongated in bloated pacing and far too self-indulging for its own good with character. Stewart impresses, with an emotionally gratifying and powerful performance, yet is head and shoulders above his co-stars in terms of talent and conviction.
