an encounter in the first kind, that's when you see a UFO. the second kind is when you see evidence of it: crop circles, radiation. the third kind is when you make contact. but the fourth kind, there's nothing more frightening than the fourth. you see, that one is when they abduct you.
i can tell that a lot of people here on letterboxd aren’t the biggest fan of the fourth kind. however, i’m in the minority that loved it. i am a huge fan of these morbid topics, and i watch a ton of them on youtube, so i was hooked by milla jovovich’s disclaimer in the first 5 minutes of the film.
this story isn’t real, but i was so incredibly invested. it even freaked me out a little bit, and horror movies never tend to have that effect on me. it was probably the “real” clips and audio recordings that got me, cause holy shit — the tommy sequence? the hypnosis scene with the sumerian voice? it was really convincing, in my opinion.
now, normally i don’t tend to fall for these false documentary movies, but i genuinely thought this was a real story before i dug a bit and realized that everything was, indeed, fake (apart from the disappearances in nome). i even stuck around for the credits just to listen to the recordings of people reporting their sightings of UFOs.
like the film mentioned, what we believe is ours to decide. in my case, i do believe that there is life outside of us. aliens are out there! do they look like those traditional green aliens with big eyes that we picture in our heads? maybe… maybe not, but they have to be out there somewhere, regardless of what they look like.
