The worst thing about this film isn't the ridiculous script or the atrocious dialogue. The worst thing about this film is the awful "real life" footage. It tries to be something it's not, and it does it so badly it's laughable!
Lots of films use the "Based on a true story" tag, but never before have I felt so offended by a film blatantly making up stories to sell a movie.
I'd rather be abducted by aliens than endure this film again.
The truly unfortunate thing about the movie is that it actually has an interesting and scary abduction story in its DNA. The found footage aspect is well done, but it’s the movie’s weird commitment to explicitly trying to convince us this was a “real” story that makes it so damn corny.
I still can’t believe this movie opens up with Milla Jovovich saying, I’m actress Milla Jovovich.

If my dogged faith in cinema isn't well documented already, after this it will be. I'm not saying I "believed" this, but I went in cold, and ended up so freaked out by the insistence of truth that I had to immediately read a debunking. Said debunking of course turned out to be a bitter, sneering hatchet job basing its assertion that the documentary footage should obviously be taken as fake and worthless on that classic objective standard by which acting is judged: the genre of the film in question. If a horror movie makes you desperate to know if it was real afterwards, then it did its job. It didn’t deserve the bad reviews.
The very definition of a 50/50 movie. On one hand, there’s sequences here that are among some of the creepiest and most disturbing of any Hollywood horror release of the past twenty years. It’s the fear of the unidentified other, the abstract terror on show in blurry camcorder footage. In the right movie, they’d be iconic. On the other hand, the messy combination of ‘documentary’ footage and stylised Mila Jovovich movie footage is just debilitating to the overall film. I feel like this thing could’ve gone full ‘fake documentary’ and been a terrifying cult classic 🤷♂️
I really wanna remake/rewrite this thing, not gonna lie.
This traumatized me as a child and is definitely responsible for my firm belief in aliens. I think it’s prime real estate for a remake. Revisiting I can safely say the so-called “real” elements hold up as pretty creepy possession-like found footage… but there’s some royally silly stuff in here and the foundation of it all doesn’t make a lot of sense. In the end though, what you believe is yours to decide.
