Chris Blazo’s review published on Letterboxd:
Excellent and creepy. The second best alien film out there next to Fire In The Sky and no I didn't believe that it was a true story. Sorry if you did, but it's no reason to give it a half star just because you were fooled. In a creepy light, this is one of the best I've ever seen as many scenes were disturbing and gripping, creating a complex that you may be the next. The film was fluidly shot while the merging between the two filming formats, real time and past recordings was unobtrusive. The cast was really good with Milla Jovovich and Elias Koteas being the main acting structure and Will Patton playing the perfect, western sheriff. The film's story is well written while there is plenty of room for interpretation and the audience's imagination to come into play.
The Fourth Kind puts a spin on the reveal of the plot as it tries to imply that the actors are merely portraying a real life person and that this film really happened. The events you watch didn't happen, but the film is based on the thousands of reports that took place all over Alaska with the majority of them stemming from Nome. Olatunde Osunsanmi did a great job mixing a few facts with a lot of fiction that may of tricked a bunch of folks, but beyond that, aliens can be a touchy subject with people and this film's anti-Christian approach may have some people thumbing their nose at it.
Dr. Abigail Tyler (Jovovich) is a Nome-based psychologist who is picking up where her late husband left off by putting troubled citizens under hypnosis in order to get a better grasp on their issues. A lot of the people who underwent hypnosis speak of being unable to move and the presence of a ghastly owl. They say it's not an owl, but don't know how to describe it. There have been multiple accounts of alien encounters in Nome, whether it be seeing a craft, seeing a being or the ultimate or fourth kind of encounter, abduction. Abbey is dealing mainly with folks who have experienced the fourth kind, but without hypnosis they don't remember anything. Things begin to go from bad to worse after a certain hypnotic session results in fatal consequences and then Abbey herself begins to experience certain uncontrollable events that shake her to the core. With her reputation, life and family in danger, Abbey enlists the help of her colleague and friend Abel Campos (Koteas) along with Awolowa Odusami (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) a professor in ancient languages. If anything, these men will be a witness to something that no one would believe, especially Sheriff August (Patton) who wants to hold Abbey responsible for the recent turn of events.
