Mark Loebus’s review published on Letterboxd:
Christopher Nolan deconstructs the impact of Oppenheimer and his work over the course of a 3-hour heavily dialogue-driven drama without boring me for a second. Nolan keeps a clearly divided 3-act-structure interesting with his classic non-linear storytelling where even sentences are placed in the beginning as Checkhov‘s guns that reveal themselves at the end.
I never felt the movie drag even though it’s mostly talking and long close-ups of Cillian Murphy, because of the incredible editing, score and cinematography. There are a lot of intercuts and visual cues that inform of the characters thoughts in a scene combined with the hard-hitting score by Ludwig Göransson.
The movie is smart in painting a fully positive or negative picture of Oppenheimer, showing him as a very divisive man that he himself never fully committed to one dogma but more to his own principles and beliefs that changed over time. Cillian Murphy will at least get an Oscar nomination if not the win for his impeccable performance, showing broad emotions with little changes in mimic, looks and speech. Furthermore, Robert Downey Jr. returns to acting with a great performance, having his own little segment that are beautifully shot in Black and White. The rest of the cast is stacked with great and fantastic actors/actresses (Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon), but I find it cool that Nolan incorporates people like Rodrick Rules, Josh Peck and Matthias Schweighöfer who aren’t really known for dramatic roles.
That ending really gave me chills
