Shane Black in total Kiss Kiss Bang Bang mode, delivering another witty and watchable comedy crime caper. I love that Black has upped his game from his usual action movies and wanders from time to time in Coen brothers territory. He does so beautifully.
Russell Crowe is a weary, older private investigator who doesn't have time for your shit. Ryan Gosling is a goofball private investigator juggling being a single father, who continuously falls into one scrap or another. Together, they make movie magic, riffing off each other in classic fashion. Gosling is the real surprise, his ability to squeal in such a high-pitched manner was a delight. He has comedic chops that he needs to flex more often...a sequel, maybe? If enough of us demand it, it could become reality.
Love the 70's aesthetic, and the whole wacky private eye stuff. None of this is new, but it's all done in a new and much appreciated way. A real grower, you love it more with each viewing. I can see myself watching this again and again.
