Seems like all the cool kids are seeing this right now. Guess ill join in…from my TV at home.
Interstellar is a movie thats hard to quantify into words let alone to write a review for it. Its an incredibly massive sci-fi adventure, epic in both its filmmaking scale and its emotional and thematic depth. In my opinion its Christopher Nolan’s finest film as a director, a movie that explores so many big ideas from the means of survival for humanity to sacrifice to the power of love. It has some of the best sound design ive ever heard in a film, with everything just sounding big. Hans Zimmer’s score is phenomenal, a highlight of a man with a track record that is pretty much flawless already. Full of incredible shots and cinematography, combining both narrative logic supported by science and the creative skills of Nolan as a director. The movie did a great job explaining high science concepts about time, dimensions and space travel in a way that anyone watching could easily pick up on. The more reserved sci fi elements give the story both a unique style as well as keep it grounded as something that you could see maybe being attempted in the not so distant future.
A pretty much perfect cast of characters, with it being some of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway’s best acting. A movie thats about so many different ideas but ine in particular stood out to me. I loved the narrative focus on love and how it is portrayed as being part of humanity’s undying spirit to survive (“do not go gently into that good night”). It really showed loves power as a force we cant really quantify. Even if we think we can rationalize it as us being emotionally irrational, it is still something that pushes humans to act and change in ways that are impossible to predict or understand. The struggle of empathy vs cold logic is a timeless one and becomes no fiercer than when the survival of the human race is at stake. This goes for Matthew McConaughey’s character Cooper, his daughter Murph played by Jessica Chastain, and for Anne Hathaway’s character Brand, all of whom are motivated beyond what a human can rationally hope for, all for the sake of love and the survival of humanity as a whole. The scene of Cooper watching Murph’s recordings and his daughter growing up without him as her world becomes worse and worse will always rip my fucking heart out. Same with the ending (“Because my Dad promised me”😭).
Interstellar is a modern sci fi classic and a masterpiece of cinematography, sound design, visual effects, and thematic depth. Its ideas are timeless and bound to touch the soul of anyone watching in some way. An enthralling, visionary spectacle and one of the greatest films of the 2010s. 10/10 pure cinema.
