Interstellar

Interstellar

“Do not go gentle into that good night.”

“Explorers, pioneers, not caretakers”. As boys, you always grow up with the same sort of things. The fast speed of a racecar, the passion of a sports team, the powers of the dinosaurs, and the journey of the mystery of the stars. Most of us grow out of these things – others become completely memorized by at least one of them. There was nothing more I wanted as a boy than to see stars. Talk about stars. Research about stars. Eventually hopefully, visit a star. I’ve lost a lot of that wonder and childish wonder throughout the years and seen a lot more people lose it completely. I’ve told myself I will try my best to never let my inner child down and to keep that wonder alive. Interstellar keeps that wonder alive.

I must have watched Interstellar a thousand times. I watched it on opening night. I watched it 3 weekends in a row after that. I watched it when it came out on digital. I watched it when I was quarantined at home. I’ve watched it while happy, depressed, lonely, and everything in between. However, I’ve never found the words to express what Interstellar makes me feel. So if you haven’t noticed now, this is gonna be a long review and bit of a doozy but I’ll probably never write anything on this movie ever again. Interstellar is more than the journey of a farmer on a mission to change the course of humanity. It’s about the philosophy of science, but also the science of belief, love, and perseverance. It’s about how relationships are the most unquantifiable things in the universe yet the most observed. Those relationships can bend space and time and give humanity the strength to move forward. The two relationships that obviously resound the most here are Cooper and Murph & Cooper and Amelia.

“Murphy’s Law doesn’t mean something bad will happen. What it means is whatever can happen will happen.” Coop and Murph’s journey in the movie is so heartbreaking and impactful, but such a vital one to tell the story of Interstellar. The way both characters were written. All the resentment, regret, rancor, and loneliness is hard to describe. You feel for Murph, who feels like her own father abandoned her on a planet headed for extinction. You feel for Coop, a father who wants to guarantee the survival of his children, yet longs to see them one last time. The way their story ends is nothing short of Shakespearean. “You were my ghost.”

Cooper and Amelia’s journey isn’t as in–depth as the one I just described, but takes a radically different approach after the harrowing sequence of Miller’s Planet. The monologue Amelia gives about love being something unquantifiable for humans will give you goosebumps every fucking time. Anne Hathaway gives her best in bringing Amelia’s philosophies and inner workings to life and she works so well with Cooper, especially near the end of the movie. Their growth together is truly remarkable. In my head canon, they both went on to live a prosperous and productive life together rebuilding a new world for humanity. “We agreed, Amelia. 90%.”

As a fan of cinema, the world building here is the best Christopher Nolan has ever done, bar none. As a Yankees fan however, I can’t help to find that scene at the game completely heartbreaking. Most likely Christopher Nolan’s best work ever, as much as I want to put Oppenheimer up there. Unfortunately for Oppenheimer, the only thing it has on par with Interstellar is its gravitas and weight of the story. Not to pick between two bad bitches, but Interstellar is by far the most beautifully written, scored, and shot film of all time. It shows us how science and love are forever intertwined, how humanity can evolve from division and segregation into warmth and harmony, how the love for each other can span generations, space and time. Interstellar is resounding, resilient, and resolute. A cinematic biblical experience.

“We used to look up to the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. Now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.”
