Bedazzled is one of my absolute Guilty Pleasures. When I was 10 years old, Brendan Fraser was my favorite actor. His role in The Mummy has left a lasting impression on me. His Rick O'Connell was the ultimate hero for me. So, when I saw this movie on TV, I was completely over-hyped. I thought: This is supposed to be the same actor? Madness!
I took him for the most variant-rich actor of all time.
Of course I know it better today. But the movie is still a lot of fun. Brendan Fraser and Elisabeth Hurley have great chemistry, the plot is simple but devilishly varied and often hilariously funny. That may not speak for my sense of humor, but I was close to collapse several times today. It's all so nice and stupid! And no matter how good he may be as a drug baron, or as a sweaty basketball player: Brendan Fraser as a naïve loser is still his most compelling performance. I can identify more with him than I might like. He may not be the best actor in the world, but he is still one of my heroes.
Incidentally, the film has taught me as a kid that selflessness is often better than egoism.
