Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road

52 WEEK CHALLENGE • Week Ten: A Film For Which A Woman Won An Oscar

I’ve learnt my lesson and I’m not gonna say a word about where Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is landing in my 2024 ranking.

Mad Max: Fury Road is a film that I’ve been looking forward to watching for a long, long time. A great pick for my 1,400th film and an even better pick for a film to distract myself when dealing with some of the worst physical pain I’ve felt — there is simply no film that I’ve seen that’s any way similar to the brutal, electric, escapist piece of cinema that is Mad Max: Fury Road. The broadness of the cinematic subgenre “escapism” is funny to me because there’s some action/sci-fi blockbusters that require 1,000 pages of literature or 20 movies and 3 miniseries to be fully understood, but Fury Road is a cinematic world that truly anyone can escape to, no matter their knowledge of or experience with George Miller’s previous works (except maybe Happy Feet); the film is also incredibly comprehensible to any viewer; in some pieces of “escapist” media, a band of eccentrically looking and behaving thugs would be given a name that exists in no language outside the world of the story — in Fury Road, they’re called “war boys”, clean and simple, no risk of bad pronounciation — could I tell you, off the top of my head, the place in Avengers: Infinity War where Thor acquires Stormbreaker? Not a chance, but I will remember, for a while to come, that the War Boys were going to Gas Town and Bullet Farm before being interrupted by Furiosa’s rebellion. This is the second 52 week challenge film in a row that has reminded me of how much cinema means to me; even right now, as I’m sitting in a hospital emergency room writing this review, my pain is suppressed for the 5-10 minutes that I’m taking to type this out — cinema’s significance in my life is a raging inferno that will never quench.
