I love this movie very much, I've seen in theaters about six times and every time it was the best theater experience I've ever had, the last year only Dunkirk came close to the intensity of La La Land. I remember how much I was genuinely happy for the cast and crew when they were grabbing awards for everything you could possibly think of. I mean, I was crying when Emma won the Oscar.
Damien Chazelle is for sure one of the most exiciting directors working today. The man only in his early thirties and already made two amazing movies (Whiplash and La La Land) and even his student film (Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench) is pretty good, and although his directing is very academic (he studied filmmaking in the Visual and Environmental Studies department at Harvard), for his movies it seems to work fine and his style at some point may even seem very original. Damien uses every single aspect of filmmaking from decorations to background music to create unbelievably good scenes, his sence of rhythm is beyond belief. Escpecially I love so-called the fight scene, everything in this scene and I mean EVERYTHING, the moment when shots cut from medium to close-up and music playing on the backgroung and then finally fire alarm... Oh, God, It's just unbelievable!
Also I love La La Land because is a love letter not only to classical musicals but to LA. They've shown you so many great places and escpecially I'm a fan of Rialto Theathre where Mia and Seb were watching Rebel Without a Cause (actually about a week before I saw for the first time La La Land I accidentally re-watched Ray's movie). And what I liked about it is that Rialto is one of the eldest theaters, it was built in 1925. You can clearly see how much Damien love not only jazz and movies but also LA.
It's a musical so there are has to be a lot of dancing and singing numbers, but La La Land it's not that type of musical. You see, in the golden era of musicals with Astaire/Ginger duet people were singing and dancing only when words would fail and throughout the entire movie. And every singing and dancing is increbile and completely unique, and also shot with one-take which is a homage to classical musicals. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling deliver not only amazing dances but also they have great voices, and chemistry between them... They were made for each other (for acting as partners I mean).
And as a conclusion La La Land is a movie that makes me laugh and cry, gives me a desire to live forward, pursue my dreams and just maked me happy because such people as Damien Chazelle who will go through anything with all ups and downs to achieve what they dream of.
