I like really, really hate musicals. Like, Into the Woods and Les Mis were just....no thanks. So mercifully, La La Land had very little singing (although the dancing was pushing it) and it didn't let the singing get in the way of the story or dilute it like so many musicals. The singing actually wasn't even that good (Ryan in particular was just so....meh). But it was a beautiful story, a touching one that really resonated with me and obviously a lot of other people. Things don't always work out the way you would've hoped, but they work out, and even though things don't last they happened -- the hopefulness of the film made it worthy, and I think that even if this were a stronger Oscar year it would still have a shot at the top just because of the core message at the heart of the film.
