Started typing this out a few hours ago after I rewatched this movie but am now finishing it after just getting out of seeing Furiosa. That movie added a lot more depth to her character so I think watching both back to back was a smart move on my part because it just makes Fury Road that much of a richer movie. My thoughts on Furiosa will be out by tomorrow likely. I need some time to let that movie and my overall thoughts on it marinate (I really liked it).
As for this movie though It’s hard not to say something that already hasn’t been said but I guess I’ll just repeat some stuff. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are great here and overall this is easily the best action movie of last decade imo and one of the best action movies ever made for sure. One aspect of this movie I feel doesn’t get enough credit is how entertaining the villains are, especially the war boys. Even just the background stuntmen who play the war boys may be some of the greatest extras ever. They’re constantly howling, throwing weapons up in the air, shooting flames etc. Nicholas Hoult did a damn good job here almost forgot to mention him.
This movie genuinely feels like the movie George Miller has always wanted to make. The other Mad Max’s are still good movies (the original and Road Warrior specifically) but from the opening shot with the two headed lizard onwards I think you can tell this is how Miller always envisioned a Mad Max movie. The first one was necessary to establish the character and such, but Road Warrior really feels like what Miller wanted the original to be and this feels like what he wanted Road Warrior to be he just wasn’t able to make this back in 1981. I could go on and on and on about this but I think I’ll just keep it at that. This was as just as good as I remember from my first time watching it a few years ago. George Miller’s magnum opus.
