I distinctly remember having a nightmare just like this...
There was a mermaid, seagulls, fog and everything....
I was the new guy but this time I didn't have a mustache and Willem Dafoe was there too but I remember he had an eye patch or a parrot or something like that...
Anyway, when Willem Dafoe told me to clean the chamber pots I remember it started a fight between us. I wanted to be fair and said that we should both clean our own chamber pots. But Willem Dafoe became angry and called me a racial slur. So I threw a chicken drum stick at him, so he got up and hit me in the face with a baton. Next we were both rolling on the floor, crying and screaming. Dafoe was kicking, biting and spitting on me and I was slamming my fist into his face and chest.
All the fighting started because Willem Dafoe's parrot had gone missing and he blamed me. I told him I hadn't seen it in a while too but no matter how hard I insisted, he said I was a shit liar and that he saw through me. I told him I would help him look for it but he told me to fuck off, so I did.
And then that creepy mermaid (but mine was blonde not brunette like the one here) showed up...and the film more or less resembles the rest of the dream from that point on. This is masterful film making right here people. Capturing the subconscious of the audience and putting it up unto the silver screen.
The Lighthouse is an unearthly film that posses no true beginning or end and does not explain anything and like a dream must be experienced and felt. Not understood.
