I’m still not entirely sure how to review The Lighthouse. I’ve seen it a few times now, it’s easily one of my favourite movies of the decade, but I still feel like there’s so much more I need to wrap my head around. This is only Robert Eggers second film (after his phenomenal debut, The Witch) and he’s already cemented himself as one of the most original and exciting directors working today. On the surface this is a movie about two men stuck in a lighthouse who slowly start to go mad, but once you dig a little deeper there are so many different ways to interpret the events. The Lighthouse relies so much on mood and atmosphere, and Eggers has crafted one of the most haunting and beautiful looking films I think I’ve ever seen. The cinematography, music, sound design, editing, and lighting are all used to perfection. Let’s throw in two amazing performances from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, some black comedy, bizarre imagery, hidden meanings, a whole lot of liquor, and you’ve got a movie I’ll probably end up watching a hundred more times. Of course, The Lighthouse isn’t for everyone - it’s weird as hell and everything isn’t spelled out for the audience, so mainstream moviegoers may want to proceed with caution. For those of you like me, who absolutely love weird as hell movies that make you think, discuss, and analyze…The Lighthouse is just what you’ve been waiting for.
