Daniel Cruse’s review published on Letterboxd:
It’s been an unusually long time since I’ve watched a movie, I’ve been quite busy with school and work responsibilities and I have also been reading a lot this past month so all of those things had kept me from finding the time but as soon as The Lighthouse came to my city, I could not wait to see it. This was my most anticipated movie of the year after The Last Black Man in San Francisco and similarly to that film, this did not disappoint in the slightest.
Everything about this film worked for me. The performances are among some of the most intense and delightfully deranged that I’ve ever seen, the music is anxiety inducing, the cinematography is gorgeous, and it’s so thoroughly disturbing. Some of the images in this movie have not left my head since I left the theater last night.
I don’t want to go into plot at all to stray from spoilers of any kind so this is actually gonna be a pretty quick review. I’ve said most of what I need to say already. Willem Dafoe needs an Oscar, he has a monologue at one point, delivered in one take, that was some of the craziest acting I’ve ever seen. You’ll know which one I’m talking about when you see it. Robert Pattinson is fantastic as well.
Robert Eggers dives as deep into the history and lore of the time period as he did with The Witch and it pays off in dividends. The dialogue, accents, props, everything seems so detail oriented to capture the time perfectly. The horror elements are amazingly executed, and the movie is surprisingly really funny. It’s a true lovecraftian tale and the most viscerally effective movie I’ve seen this year.
I’m sure you’ve already heard how amazing it is so this isn’t a surprise but definitely don’t miss this movie if it seems like you’d enjoy it. This is a very close contender for my favorite of the year.
