They say “there is enchantment in the light,” and after seeing this, I wouldn’t doubt the “light” is just a representation of this whole film in general because wow.
Robert Eggers obviously has a knack for these old English tales but to make them THIS good while still managing to creep me out (definitely a lot more than most modern horror films nowadays). It’s clear Eggers has sure improved his filmmaking since his last film, which is crazy because his last film was already really good.
The film itself looks great. Every scene is shot so well and I can’t seem to figure out which shot stood out most to me, considering how amazing it all looked. Every camera move, every still, it all looked wonderful. Plus there were even a few random comedic moments that were actually funny.
Everything about the story, however, is simple. If it were to be explained to someone, I’m sure the other person would think “that’s it?” But no that isn’t it! It’s a simple story yet Robert Eggers and his brother Max Eggers have really created a lot more depth within the film and the characters. It’s more complex than that and it’s because of those reasons as to why I can’t get this movie out of my head.
Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe are clearly trying to out act each other until you reach the end and realize that it’s a close tie. Dafoe really brought his character to life while Pattinson really enhances his craziness to a whole new level.
This whole film is insane and it’s definitely on my list of favorite films of 2019. I just can’t believe Eggers managed to make something like this and have it turn out so great. Honestly, I was afraid that this film wouldn't even hold up since The Witch is already a great film. I’m glad I was wrong.
