BEETLEJUICE! BEETLEJUICE!! BEETLEJU—
It’s safe to say Tim Burton is back, at least reasonably so. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice takes about half an hour to really find its stride, but once it does, the wacky, goofy, and hilarious Tim Burton we know is at his best.
The original cast hasn’t missed a beat. Keaton is raunchy, gross, and charming, while Winona remains the goth baddie she’s always been. The character direction for Lydia feels empathetically true to her roots, especially in the context of other legacy stories. Catherine O’Hara is equally as demanding and obstreperous, yet just like in the original, her witch-like charm grounds the film with a familiar, warm, and sentimental touch.
The visuals are eccentric, wonky, and colorful. Burton doesn’t shy away from practical effects, and it makes the film that much better. The Connecticut countryside is as beautiful as ever, and the film balances the world of the dead with the pumpkin-spice-scented landscapes of the living exceptionally well. I can’t wait to play this at home come October—it’s the perfect new Halloween film, flaunting its seasonal charm even more flamboyantly than the first film.
Unfortunately, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice isn’t without its flaws. The film’s sporadic, drunken pace feels weighed down by one too many plotlines, complicating a story that the first film proved didn’t need to be overly complex. HOWEVER, I will admit, the film’s jumbled plot comes off more as over-ambition rather than a lack of identity. It still has plenty of character. Tim Burton isn’t just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, but it’s clear he may have been carried away by all the possibilities.
As the season of trick-or-treat approaches, I’m pleased to say Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is absolutely the former. I hope Tim Burton rides this momentum forward—and fast.
