Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an absolute mess of a movie. It is like Burton and the writers had 4 different ideas and could not commit to one. There is literally so many plot threads that this movie attempts to juggle and how they conclude each plot thread is incredibly anticlimactic. For example Monica Bellucci's character (who looks impossibly good for someone nearly 60 years old) was introduced as this major villain and storyline only for nothing to really come of it. Like literally could have been taken out of the movie and it probably would not have changed it much.
Despite my huge gripe with the story and script I still thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It mainly has to do with how much I loved the vibe and aesthetic of this film. It's classic Tim Burton vibes. The practical effects in this movies is top tier and the makeup department definitely outdid themselves. You can tell that there was so much care and love put into this movie. You can also see it in the cast. Keaton is flawless in the titular role and it was great to see a lot more of him this time around. Catherine O'Hara is downright hilarious. I loved Willem Dafoe in this as well. Ryder wasn't a standout for me, but she was still great in the role and Jenna Ortega fit in nicely. For a sequel almost 4 decades in the making, the cast seemed like they were having a blast.
Overall despite its story flaws, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an admirable legacy sequel. It has enough laughs, fun horror elements and plenty of callbacks to the first one. I may have already started my spooky season viewing, but this would also have been a perfect movie to ring in spooky season 2024.
