Daichi Kuga ( () () (だい) () Kuga Daichi?) is one of the five antagonists who bullied Shun Uruma in their middle school years, he subjected Uruma to frequent beatings and, in Uruma's words, used him as a "test kit" to try out his techniques.

Appearance[]

Out of all five of Uruma's bullies, Kuga is noticeably the biggest in both size and height since a young age. He has short black hair with two pointed ends similar to devil horns. At the age of 16, he has more defined muscles and a scar that spans from his right cheek to his jaw.

Personality[]

Like the other five, Kuga is a cruel and violent individual who derives fun out of physically beating and torturing others to submission, relying on his size, brute strength and judo expertise to get whatever he wants. While he is confident in his strength, he is more cautious and the type to not underestimate others, as he is wary of Uruma after he killed three of his acquaintances. He seems to only care for Kyou and showed little concern over the other three's deaths.

He's short tempered, showcased in chapter 49 when he quickly became enraged when Uruma challenged him to a Judo match, and physically abusive to everyone around him with the exception of Kyou and the three other bullies, as he regularly breaks his teammate's bones under the guise of practice and sexually assaults his female peers.

However, in later chapters, it is revealed that Kuga is much more twisted and psychopathic than everyone initially saw him. Kuga carries a lustful obsession for Kyou that was around since they were 12, as he had erections around him and even tried to force himself on him once, leading to Kyou gashing his cheek and scarring him. Despite this, he still desperately desires to rape and kill Kyou, showing that Kuga never really cared about Kyou at all. This obsessive desire presented itself when Kuga, in a delusional state, raped and killed Anna, Kyou's cousin who bares a striking resemblance to him and showed no remorse even after realizing it was her, seeing her as ultimately nothing. His sexual depravity reached even lower when Kuga attempted to rape Uruma after beating him close to death as a practice run for when he would confront Kyou.

Despite all his bravado, deep down Kuga is shown to be a coward once the tables have been turned. The first instance was when Kyou had slashed him on the cheek, causing Kuga to apologize repeatedly. The second was when Uruma managed to free himself and grabbed a brick to repeatedly smash Kuga's face with it, Kuga starts pleading for Uruma to stop and even going as far as apologizing if it meant sparing him, showing that Kuga was dependent on his size and sheer brute strength to dominate others and was not accustomed to the idea of someone overpowering him in bouts of strength.

Story[]

Plot[]

At the beginning of the manga, we learn that Kuga is a 12-year-old bully among five others like him. He also bullied Uruma. At the moment when they notice that Shun has a cat, he and Senkouji Katsumi told about it, which is why they took the cat and killed it. Later, when they scared Shun, Kuga and the others wondered, "Why is Kyou bullying Uruma?", to which Kyou responded. After Uruma transferred, Kuga and the others were surprised, but they met again after. After the accident, it is implied that Anzai Zenichi, the detective who investigated the accident case, asked the five hooligans, including Kuga, about what happened.

Pre-timeskip[]

Kuga appears in Chapter 2 as Meiseki High School's student and Uruma's classmate. Kuga is shown with Senkoji, talking about Uruma and how Senkouji regrets doing bad to him. After Senkoji's death, he appears with the other delinquents to discuss what happened to Senkoji, though Kuga responds that Senkoji is not answering him, saying that he was hanging out with Uruma before he went missing, surprising Shigoku Kyou and the others.[3]

After defeating the second of the five, he meets with Shigoku Madoka. After what happened to Ushiro, Madoka tells them that they need to kill Uruma as soon as possible, though after Kyu refused, Kuga listened to Kyou and after he leaves, he told Madoka that he himself didn't like the idea.

After Madoka's death, Kuga is the only one Uruma must kill. As Uruma learned, Kuga had been breaking his teammates' bones and had raped several female students. Although he later learned that Kuga had taken a girl hostage- Sugisaki Anna, Kyou's cousin, although it turned out that Anna was not a hostage as she was trying to take care of Kuga, although after Kuga was invited to a cafe, he overheard Anna blurting out that she was taking care of Kuga, after which in a deserted place he beat her and wanted to rape her, but until he recognized her as Kyu. After Anna was kidnapped, Kuga thought that Uruma was joking. Kuga is led to the secluded mountains of Uruma's home, only to find Uruma in a judo uniform and tatami mats along the floor. Uruma proceeds to challenge him to a judo match where it initially seems that Kuga has the upper hand. Throwing Uruma to the ground and attempting to beat him to death, Uruma is able to escape his grasp unharmed multiple times by rolling. Kuga is then thrown face first to the ground after charging him in fury, resulting in his teeth being knocked out and rendered unconscious after Uruma proceeds to break most of his limbs. Kuga regains consciousness and finds himself suspended over a barrel of water. Uruma lowers him into it and lights a fire under the barrel, revealing that there are mantis shrimp in the barrel. The shrimp proceed to tear through Kuga in an attempt to escape the boiling water. However, Anna frees Kuga and escapes with him to a nearby shed when Uruma steps out. Trying to comfort him, Kuga assaults Anna in a state of delusion, believing her to be Kyou and proceeds to beat her to death before Uruma finds her. Kuga blindside Uruma and ties him up, proceeding to beat him multiple times before deciding to perform sodomy on Uruma in an attempt to practice for when he faces Kyou. Uruma is eventually able to free himself using a sickle and attacks Kuga with a cinderblock, pinning him down. Kuga desperately pleads for his life and dies after Uruma brutally bashes his face in with the cinderblock several times. Even after he died, Uruma proceeded to continue till there was nothing left but blood and grey matter. Kuga's body is later on melted, burned, and disposed of.

Post-timeskip[]

Kuga appears in a flashback and is referred to as the "Fourth Sinner".

Trivia[]

  • Kuga is by far not only the only bully to not be killed through execution, but is also the first to be killed in an alternative method by Uruma, forcing the latter to improvise a different way of executing him.
  • Kuga is undefeated in judo tournaments from elementary to high school. He doesn't rely on special moves and simply grabs and throws his opponents. He has a rumored grip strength of 180kg (397 lbs)
  • It's implied that Kuga was much kinder in his youth before he had met and was subsequentially corrupted by Kyou. However, this is left ambiguous
  • It's revealed in Chapter 54 that the scar on his cheek was given to him by Kyou after he attempted to force himself on him.
  • Kuga is by far the vilest of the four bullies due to his actions of raping several female students, assaulting and breaking several of his teammate's bones, and murdering Anna after she tried to save him, showing no guilt or remorse for doing so and insulting her post-mortem.
  • Although Kuga is said to be the best martial artist in judo tournaments, this fact is left ambiguous as Kyou, his leader, is revealed to have a black belt in judo in Chapter 65, making it unknown WHO the best martial artist of Japan is.
