"Tensions are high - this Embassy is a delicate affair."
―Unyielding Fashav

The Embassy is the fourth main quest in Horizon Forbidden West.

Synopsis[]

After clearing the Daunt of Bristlebacks, Aloy proceeds to Barren Light to attend the Embassy. The second-in-command, Lawan, guides her to the garrison's commander, Nozar, who is waiting along with Studious Vuadis. While the Carja have signaled their readiness to begin, only two of the three Tenakth clans have raised their banners. Out of patience, Aloy makes her way to the gate and demands to be let through.

As Aloy argues with the guards, Varl finally catches up and pulls into Barren Light. Things between Aloy and the guards get heated, and Nozar orders her arrest. However, Erend intervenes on her behalf, talking Nozar down and convincing the guards to let Aloy through the gates. Varl joins her as she steps out of the fort.

Aloy and Varl make their way to the border, where Tenakth Marshals stop them and warn them that any further steps will result in their deaths. Aloy attempts to reason with them to no avail, until Marshal Fashav arrives and convinces the others to listen to what she has to say. After Aloy explains the nature of her mission to him, Fashav is convinced, and he presents her with a dagger to serve as right of passage into the Clan Lands. He also advises her to talk to the Tenakth Chief Hekarro should she need any help. They are interrupted by the arrival of the Sky Clan's delegation, headed by Marshal Kotallo. With all three clans now present, the Tenakth sound their readiness and the Embassy can finally begin. Aloy attempts to press on, but Fashav warns her to wait until the Embassy has concluded. Soon after, the gates of Barren Light are opened, and the Carja delegation emerges from the fort to begin the Embassy.

At the border, Studious Vuadis begins to officiate the Embassy, but he is interrupted by a voice booming through the valley. Emerging atop a ridge, Regalla accuses the Marshals of treason for "conspiring" with the Carja and sentences them to death. At first, the Marshals are unfazed by her threats, until her rebels emerge from behind her, riding overridden machines. Nozar urges Fashav to accompany the Carja delegation as they attempt to run back into the fort. Meanwhile, Regalla orders her archers to fire down on the Marshals. Many fail to get to cover in time and are felled by the volley. Seeing the onslaught, the clan envoys attempt to interfere, but they are held back by a volley of rebel fire. Just before reaching the fort's gates, the Carja are overrun and surrounded by mounted rebels. Vuadis makes a run for the gate only to be shot and killed by a rebel archer. Seeing no way out, Fashav urges the Carja to stand their ground and fight. Meanwhile, the garrison in the fort are unable to provide fire support due to the rebels' mobility. Outmatched and outnumbered, the entire Carja delegation is slaughtered, Fashav included.

Regalla orders her riders to take the center of the battlefield. Aloy, Varl, and the remaining Tenakth are forced to fight the rebels together. Nearly all the Marshals are killed in the ensuing fight. After seeing a fellow Marshal get fatally shot, Kotallo flies into a rage. After dismounting the rider with a well-thrown lance, he attempts to stop a charging Bristleback with his own body, but his left arm is torn off. When the fallen Marshal uses the last of his strength to kill the Bristleback with a spear, they are both crushed beneath the machine's weight. Aloy and Varl are now the last ones standing. Out of patience, Regalla's champion Grudda descends into the battlefield to finish the job himself. He easily overpowers Varl before engaging Aloy. After a lengthy fight, she emerges victorious and challenges Regalla to come down and fight her, but Regalla refuses, as by Tenakth law, Aloy had earned her life. The rebels savor their moment of victory and fall back, their war against Hekarro begun. In the battle's aftermath, the clan envoys pull Kotallo from under the dead Bristleback, and Aloy helps a wounded Varl back to the fort to recover.

The following day, the gates of Barren Light are reopened, and Keruf and his crew leave the fort to search the battlefield for valuable loot. Likewise, Aloy returns to the battlefield and loots the Shieldwing from Grudda's corpse. Meanwhile, the last remaining Tenakth dismantle their banners and leave. Aloy has one last conversation with the new commander, Lawan, and waves Erend and Varl goodbye before heading off into the Forbidden West.
