"The lesson will be taught in due time, Aloy. Until then, we wait."

Seeds of the Past is a main quest in Horizon Forbidden West. It is one of three quests that can be completed after The Eye of the Earth.

Synopsis[]

Following the coordinates provided by GAIA, Aloy arrives at the Greenhouse, a biotech research facility formerly operated by Faro Automated Solutions. She notes the bodies of several Tenakth soldiers along the approach and becomes suspicious that someone else may be there. Those suspicions are proven correct when she immediately comes under fire from soldiers inside the building wearing strange uniforms, who call her "barbarian" and refuse to negotiate when she attempts to reach out.

After defeating the soldiers, Aloy makes her way inside the building and discovers that the path to the Greenhouse's data core is blocked by a Metal Flower. Searching along an alternate path, she climbs up an elevator shaft to find herself in an office with seemingly no other exit. Examining the console in the office, Aloy activates a hologram of the facility's director describing the Metal Flowers, which she referred to as "Adamantine Wreaths" and notes that a way to dissolve them was being worked on at Test Station Ivy elsewhere in the building. With some further manipulation of the console, Aloy opens up one of the walls to reveal windows into the central courtyard, which contains a camp guarded by more of the mysterious soldiers.

Having eliminated the soldiers in the camp, Aloy enters the main part of the building and discovers a young woman working inside, wearing an older model Focus. After the initial misunderstanding, the young woman introduces herself as Alva, and explains that she and the soldiers belong to a tribe called the Quen, coming from the other side of the Great Ocean in search of ancient knowledge, which they call "the Legacy," to stop the famines and storms plaguing their homeland. She explains that as a Diviner of her tribe, she is responsible for interpreting the Legacy with the assistance of her Focus for the benefit of the Quen. Alva was searching in the Greenhouse's files for a map to get further into the facility, but she hit a dead end when the map file appeared to be corrupted. However, Aloy is able to view the file with no problem, and she recognizes that Alva's Focus is simply too obsolete to read it. The map reveals a tunnel system underneath the facility that they could use to traverse the various testing areas.

Aloy and Alva use the twin consoles in the room to open the tunnel access and descend into the tunnels. Eventually, they emerge in Test Station Elm, and note two console on opposite sides above the main room behind locked doors. Finding a key behind one of the battery racks, Aloy unlocks a large machine mounted on guide rails along the floor, which she uses to transport Alva to one of the consoles. Using a power cell found on one of the battery racks, she unlocks the door to Alva's console, finding that she had discovered a large amount of data from the consoles. Aloy makes her way to the other console and she and Alva simultaneously activate their consoles. To their horror, the consoles activate a biomass conversion system similar to those used by the Chariot-class machines in the outdoor testing field, which consumes all organic matter within the field except for the Adamantine Wreath. Alva suffers a brief crisis of faith after Aloy informs her that this was how the Old Ones were destroyed, but she calms down after Aloy assures her that they have the same goal: to put an end to the storms and famines causing their peoples' suffering.

Descending into the tunnels again, Aloy and Alva eventually emerge into another courtyard, where they are ambushed by a Dreadwing that had been invisibly lying in wait. Upon defeating the machine, Aloy discovers a Metal Flower within the machine's body, and speculates that Dreadwings are responsible for deploying the Metal Flowers she'd discovered throughout her travels. They make their way into the main building of Test Station Ivy, where they discover a code module that can be deployed to dissolve the Adamantine Wreath vines blocking the way into the data core. After attaching the code module to her spear at a workbench in the Quen camp, they return to the Metal Flower in the entrance hall, and Aloy successfully uses the module to dissolve the vines. Inside the data core, Aloy finds DEMETER and uses the Master Override to restore it to its original code and download it to the GAIA kernel, while Alva pores over the newly unlocked files in the Greenhouse's data archive.

Suddenly, more Quen soldiers burst into the room and train their bows on Aloy, identifying her as the one responsible for killing the other soldiers. However, Alva defuses the situation by presenting Aloy as the reincarnation of Dr. Sobeck, one of the Quen's revered "Ancestors", much to Aloy's discomfort and bewilderment. While the soldiers bow to Aloy, Alva orders them to start transporting the data from the archive as she leads her away, advising her to leave the area before the soldiers decide to take her back to their camp at Legacy's Landfall. Despite this, Alva gives Aloy the location of the camp in case she needs to go there later. With DEMETER secured, Aloy travels back to the base and reintegrates the sub-function back under GAIA's control.
