- "They climbed in tight, dizzying circles; Harry had never been up here before. At last they reached a door. There was no handle and no keyhole: nothing but a plain expanse of aged wood, and a bronze knocker in the shape an eagle."
- — Description of the staircase[src]
This staircase was located in Ravenclaw Tower, beginning on the fifth floor. The ascent was described as "tight" and "dizzying". The top of the staircase linked to the Ravenclaw common room.[1] The staircase was located near the Grey Lady Corridor, which housed Helena Ravenclaw's ghost.[2]
History[]
In the 1890s, the tower staircase contained a bust of a Ravenclaw wizard.[3]
On 2 May, 1998, during the Battle of Hogwarts, students (presumably of Ravenclaw House) ran up and down the staircase before the battle began.[2] Harry Potter and Luna Lovegood used this staircase to enter the Ravenclaw Common Room in hopes of finding the Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Harry and Luna never enter the Ravenclaw common room as Luna persuades Harry to see the Grey Lady in a corridor instead.[2]
- This staircase has the same layout as the Divination Stairwell and Defence Against the Dark Arts staircase which were filmed at St Paul's Cathedral in London.
