This article refers to Missable Content in Grand Theft Auto III.
This mission can be permanently missed in a save file after completing the mission Waka-Gashira Wipeout!, which means that the player should complete Shima before that mission if they want to achieve 100% completion and unlock all achievements/trophies.

The business's fortunate enough to have our protection settle their accounts today. Go and collect the money immediately, so we can enter it into the casino accounts.

Shima is a mission in Grand Theft Auto III, given to protagonist Claude by Yakuza co-leader Kenji Kasen from his casino in the Torrington district of Staunton Island, Liberty City.

Mission[]

Claude drops by the casino looking for more work from Kenji. Kenji tasks Claude to go and collect protection money ready for them in different locations.

Claude goes to the first location and collects the briefcase with no sweat. After that, he makes his way to the second location. He collects the briefcase, and kills the Diablo gang member waiting nearby, since he is shooting at him.

He then goes to the third location; a supermarket in Belleville Park. The person inside says that he couldn't pay the money since some gang ransacked the place and took everything. Because of this, Claude drives to the gang's location, Hepburn Heights in Portland. Claude then finds out it is the Diablos who ransacked the place. He kills every Diablo in sight, and collects the briefcase containing the money. He makes his way back to the casino.

Mission Objectives[]

In order to complete the mission the player must:

  • Go and collect the first briefcase
  • Go and collect the second briefcase
  • Go to the bar
  • Punish the gang members responsible and retrieve the protection money
  • Take the money back to the casino

Reward[]

The monetary reward for this mission is $10,000. The mission Smack Down is unlocked.

Transcript
Claude meets Kenji Kasen at the garden of the roof of his casino.
Kenji Kasen: To be truly strong, it is important that you never show weakness. The businesses fortunate enough to have our protection settle their accounts today. Go and collect the money immediately, so we can enter it into the casino accounts.
Claude gets a briefcase from one location in Torrington, then another in Bedford Point, where he encounters a Diablos member and kills him off. Claude then heads to the final location, the Uncle BJ's Deli & Groceries store in Belleville Park, only to find it vandalized. Claude attempts to go inside the store, but is stopped by the store's clerk.
Store Clerk: I can't pay you and I wouldn't pay you if I could! Some young gang just jacked out the place. They took everything! You guys are useless. What kind of Yakuza are you anyway?!
The clerk closes the door to the store, and Claude goes to Hepburn Heights, the Diablos' territory, where the remaining protection money is kept. He kills all the Diablo members guarding the briefcase, takes it and rides back to Kenji's Casino.

Trivia[]

  • In Japanese, Shima means island. It's also a slang term for gang territory. This fits in with Diablos moving onto Yakuza turf.
  • This is one of the only cases where gang members can be found out of their respective turf. The other missions are Bomb Da Base: Act II, Espresso-2-Go! (Colombian Cartel in Portland), Bait (Yakuza in Shoreside Vale).
  • This is the only mission in the game showing the rivalry between the Diablos and the Yakuza.
  • The robbed supermarket salesman shouts "You guys are useless! What kind of Yakuza are you anyway?!" This fits brilliantly within the context, as in the Japanese language, "yakuza" means "useless hand [of cards]".
  • The safehouses' garages won't repair the vehicles during this mission, from right after the angry supermarket salesman until the end of the mission.
