Grab That Dough is the sixteenth episode of the third season of The Golden Girls and the sixty-seventh episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Winifred Hervey, the episode premiered on NBC-TV on January 23rd, 1988.
The girls visit Hollywood, California, to be on the game show Grab that Dough. They are forced to travel cross-country the day before the show, and from there, everything goes wrong: the airline loses their luggage; their hotel has no vacant rooms and they're forced to sleep in the lobby; their purses are stolen; and when they finally get to the television station for the taping, Dorothy and Blanche end up pitting themselves against Rose and Sophia.
When the girls are in the hotel lobby, there is a terra cotta horse statue behind Dorothy on the table. This is the same horse statue that sits on the table behind the couch in the girls' Miami home in numerous episodes.
Production[]
The hand gesture that Guy Corbin makes before going to the game show's commercial break is a nod to Betty White's late husband Allen Ludden, host of the game shows Password and Password Plus in the 1960's and 70's. It is the same hand gesture he used to make at the top of each show and for each new password to appear on screen.
Blanche mocks the game show hostess, "I just want you to know that the pictures of you in that sleazy, girlie magazine was so tastefully done." This was a joke invoking Vanna White, the letter turner on the game show "Wheel of Fortune". A few months prior to the airing of this episode, "Playboy" magazine had published lingerie photos of White that she had taken a few years earlier when she was a struggling newcomer in Hollywood.
Rose describes Gene Rayburn, Chuck Woolery, and Bob Eubanks as attractive game show hosts. Betty White had been a panelist on Match Game and Match Game PM with Gene Rayburn as the host in 1970s and early 1980s.
Goofs[]
Blanche suggests they can get the red eye to California from Miami. Red eye flights are flights that fly from west to east, overnight.
