An Illegitimate Concern is the eighteenth episode of the fifth season of The Golden Girls and the one-hundred and twentieth episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Marc Cherry and Jamie Wooten, it premiered on NBC-TV on February 12th, 1990.
Blanche is stunned when a man comes to the front door and claims to be the illegitimate son of her late husband. Meanwhile, Dorothy and Sophia enter a mother-daughter pageant at Shady Pines.
Plot[]
Sophia decides to enter her and Dorothy in the Sandy Pines Mother-Daughter Pageant so she can beat a rival, Dorothy agrees after Sophia sweet talks her. A man called David Patton comes to the door looking for George Devereaux of course Blanche reveals the truth which is that he's dead, David clearly shocked leaves the house with a clear lie, Blanche reveals she heard he was looking for George she thinks David is after her.
The next day he returns and Blanche confronts him, he confesses that George was his Father and Blanche is shocked and tries to deny what he said but the proof is everywhere. Blanche angry asks him to leave as David tries to ask questions about his father, Blanche is hurt by this as she remained faithful to George turning down every temptation even a member of 60 Minutes all the girls conclude it was Morley Safer.
While Blanche copes with the truth Dorothy and Sophia practice for the talent part of the Pageant dressing first as Sonny and Cher. However on the day of the Pageant Blanche meets with David and shows him pictures of George realizing that she can't be angry at David as he's just a victim like her.
That night Dorothy and Sophia return from the Pageant as runners up but they don't mind as they enjoyed themselves and Blanche tells them she forgives George and let David know about his Father, as they go to the Kitchen, Blanche tells George off in the photos she showed David revealing she turned down Andy Rooney.[1]
Sophia dresses up as Sonny Bono and Dorothy as Cher. Estelle Getty previously worked with Cher, playing her mother in the 1985 movie Mask. Additionally, Sonny Bono makes a guest appearance as himself in Season 6's "Mrs. George Deveraux".[2]
Production[]
This was Marc Cherry's first time as a writer on The Golden Girls. Years later he would go on to create the hit show Desperate Housewives, which also had female characters in the lead roles.
Years after making his guest appearance on The Golden Girls, Mark Moses would go on to star in a supporting role as a series regular for a couple of seasons on Cherry's hit series Desperate Housewives. He played Paul Young, the husband and widower of that show's deceased narrator Mary Alice Young.
When Dorothy and Sophia are dressed up as Sonny and Cher, Blanche enters the room and says they could be celebrity look-alikes for the comedy duo Cheech & Chong. Cheech Marin later played a role as a chef in the spin-off The Golden Palace alongside Rue McClanahan, Betty White, and Estelle Getty.
Goofs[]
When Rose mentions why the supposed salesman didn't bring in the encyclopedias, Blanche says that no sales person will bring in twenty-six encyclopedias. Some of the encyclopedias have more than one letter inside them.
