Little Sister is the twenty-first episode of the fourth season of The Golden Girls and the ninety-seventh episode overall. Directed by Terry Hughes and written by Christopher Lloyd, it aired on NBC-TV on April 1st, 1989.
Rose catches her visiting sister Holly with Blanche's boyfriend and tries to tell Blanche and Dorothy, who have been charmed by Holly and refuse to believe Rose. Meanwhile, Dorothy trusts Sophia to watch a dog.
Plot[]
Sophia is babysitting Dreyfuss, Rose's younger sister, Holly visits while on a business trip, and spends all her time with Dorothy and Blanche. Rose doesn't get along with Holly, but Dorothy and Blanche like her.
Dreyfuss "disappears," and Sophia goes to the pet shop to get a second dog, but Dreyfuss eventually returns. Rose sees Gary Tucker, Blanche's current boyfriend, kissing Holly in the living room, but only Sophia believes her. Afterward, Gary cancels his date with Blanche, while his mother is in the hospital having surgery. When Dorothy and Blanche return home, Holly walks out of the bedroom wearing a bathrobe, and tells them she was having a nice, quiet evening at home, but Dreyfuss' lookalike walks into the living room with a pair of men's pants in his mouth, and it turns out that they belong to Gary, and Blanche breaks up with him.
Rose returns, and sees Holly and Gary and tells Holly she wants to speak to her in the kitchen. Gary tries to take back his pants, but Dreyfuss' lookalike barks at him and chases him out the front door. Back in the kitchen, Rose tells Holly that she wants an explanation for her behavior, because she can't figure her out. She's bright, attractive, and has a career, but she always acts like such a jackass. Holly tells Rose that she never learned to be the good friend she was, and she never learned how to make friends. Rose tells Holly that she never learned how to keep friends, and that she never thought of anyone but herself, and says goodbye to Holly. The next morning, Holly leaves, and is never seen again.[1]
Betty White and Inga Swenson co-starred together in the 1962 film Advise & Consent.
Production[]
Jerry Hardin, who plays Blanche's beau, previously played Blanche's psychology professor in "Adult Education".[2] Both characters end up wronging her: Professor Cooper sexually harasses Blanche, and Gary Tucker cheats on Blanche with Rose's sister.
Continuity[]
Rose's mother Alma visits in "Blanche and the Younger Man".[3] In this episode, she tells Sophia "I swear on my mother's grave!" No mention was ever made of Alma's death, although it is possible the death happened and was simply omitted from the storyline.
Goofs[]
Gary's left arm changes position on the couch when he hits on Rose.
In "Transplant", Rose tells Blanche she's never heard of anybody who hates their own sister, and yet she hates her own little sister in this episode.[4]
