Professor Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, is a superhero who appears in the X-Men film franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also appears in the Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers series.
A mutant, he is the most powerful telepath alive. While confronting his old friend and rival Magneto, he was accidentally shot and had his spine damaged, leaving him confined to a wheelchair. He is the founder and headmaster of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, a place where mutants can learn to control their powers and use them for good. He is the one the X-Men answer to, acting as both a leader and a surrogate father to the team. His dream is for mutants and normal humans to live together in peace and harmony.
The character is primarily played by Patrick Stewart, who appeared in the majority of X-Men films and the MCU. James McAvoy portrays a younger version of the character, starting with X-Men: First Class (2011).
Professor X was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Appearances[]
Marvel Cinematic Universe[]
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness[]
Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his first appearance as the character since Logan (2017).
He is a resident of a universe outside of the MCU and is a member of the Illuminati alongside Mister Fantastic, Black Bolt, Captain Marvel, Captain Carter, and Karl Mordo. When Thanos launched his crusade for the Infinity Stones, the Illuminati were able to defeat him using the Book of Vishanti. However, Doctor Strange of that universe confessed that he had caused an incursion, an event in which a reality is destroyed. He volunteered to be executed to prevent further harm, with Xavier and the rest of the Illuminati agreeing.
Years later, America Chavez and another version of Doctor Strange would wind up in this universe. Mordo brought Strange before the Illuminati for trial, with Xavier telepathically projecting the memory of the execution of his universe's Strange onto Strange to reveal the truth. But before they could vote to execute Strange, Wanda Maximoff (possessed by the Scarlet Witch from Strange's universe) began to invade the facility. Xavier decided to entrust America to Strange despite Mordo's objections, as he entered Wanda's mind and attempted to free her from the Scarlet Witch. This was unsuccessful, and the Scarlet Witch proceeded to snap Xavier's neck, instantly killing him.
The Marvels[]
Whilst Professor X doesn't appear in the film, he is mentioned, when Dr. Hank McCoy informs Binary that Charles asked for an update on the woman she found who crossed into their reality.
Deadpool & Wolverine[]
- “I know your brother. As much as I wanna fucking kill you, every bone in my body wants to fucking kill you, he would not let me stand here and watch you die.”
- ―Wolverine to Cassandra Nova[src]
Charles does not appear in this film, but is mentioned a couple of times by both his sister, Cassandra Nova and Wolverine. When Cassandra first appears, she tells Wolverine and Deadpool that she tried to strangle Charles while they were both in the womb and it was put towards her being sent to the Void as a baby. Deadpool asks how Cassandra knew Charles, referring to him as Chuck, before she tells him that she is Professor X's twin sister. Later just as Deadpool tries to convince Logan to kill Cassandra, Wolverine says no and spares her life as he believes the Charles he knew wouldn't want him to kill Cassandra, no matter how bad she is.
X-Men (film series)[]
Deadpool 2[]
Professor X, along with a few other members of the X-Men appear in a brief cameo. They can be seen conversing in another room, while Wade is in the X-Mansion, complaining the studio hasn't allowed them to bring in one of the more famous members of the team.
Dark Phoenix[]
Professor Xavier, played by James McAvoy, appears in this film. In the 1970s, Charles Xavier meets a young Jean Grey following a car accident caused by her emergent telekinetic mutant powers, which killed both of her parents. Xavier informs Jean about her powers and invites her to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, a safe place for her to explore her abilities.
In the early 1990s, Xavier and Beast watch news coverage of the space shuttle Endeavor, which has been damaged by cosmic energy. Xavier wants the X-Men to help, but Beast expresses concerns about the plausibility when the president calls Xavier for the X-Men's help. Beast acquiesces, and the team begins the mission. Xavier uses Cerebro to receive information from NASA about what caused the incident. When Raven is concerned about the safety of the mission, Xavier urges the team to proceed and save the entire NASA team, which causes Jean to become exposed to and absorb the mysterious cosmic energy. The team recovers Jean from space, and she regains consciousness, to everybody's relief.
When the X-Men return to Earth with the NASA astronauts, the human population celebrates them, which pleases Xavier greatly. After instructing Beast to perform a medical examination on Jean, Raven expresses frustration with Xavier, whom she believes is putting the team through dangerous missions to stoke his own ego. Xavier argues that the X-Men's risky endeavors and the public recognition that follows them are necessary to keep peace between humans and mutants.
While all of the X-Men attend a party at the school, Xavier is honored by the President at a private event where he muses on the X-Men's newfound acceptance. He leaves early when he senses that something bad has happened to Jean, who has fallen unconscious at the party. Returning to the mansion, he worries about the sudden growth of Jean's mutation, which is preventing him from accessing her mind. He uses Cerebro to enhance his telepathic powers. He reveals to Beast and Raven that he had blocked the memory of her parents' car accident, but the cosmic energy is causing the changes he had made to falter. As Jean hears her father's voice and begins to awaken, Xavier attempts to distract her by telling her to focus on his voice. Jean realizes her father is still alive and grows angry at Xavier, who instructs Beast to amplify Cerebro. Beast warns that Cerebro is already at too high power as it causes Xavier's nose to bleed and makes him faint.
When Xavier awakens in the medical bay, Beast warns him and Raven that he isn't well, but Xavier insists that he will be. Scott enters the med bay and informs them that Jean has left to go see her father. Xavier tells the team to prepare the Blackbird and that they will all be going to bring Jean home. Raven urges Xavier to stay, but he insists he must be there to stop her from discovering the truth. On the jet, Raven notes that Xavier is not able to track Jean's location and asks how he knows where she is, to which he replies, "You know how." Raven and Beast show disgust at the fact that Xavier had been hiding the truth from Jean for all the years he had known her.
Jean looks for her father, only for him to reject the offer to remain part of her life. Traumatized, Jean destroys her father's house and accidentally kills Raven, which leads to Hank rejecting Xavier and joining Magneto while seeking revenge on Jean for Raven's death. When an alien race confronts Jean with the goal of draining off her new power to allow them to terraform Earth into their new home world, Xavier and the other X-Men come back together to protect Jean, helping her achieve a new sense of mental stability before she departs Earth.
The film ends with Hank taking over as headmaster of the school while Xavier decides to 'retire' for a time. A final scene shows Xavier playing chess with Erik in Paris as they contemplate their new future.
